If you just want a reliable and efficient car I would look at a skoda Octavia, vw golf or passatt. Peugot 406/7 are a lot of car for the money and go on forever. As a wildcard don't dismiss an alfa 156. Loaded with kit and the 2.4 engine is quick and efficient. I've owned one for years and never had a problem.
