Just bought a pc copy for steam from greenmangaming for £30. £5 cheaper then steam themselves are selling it.

Loved Morrowind and Oblivion.

Got too many damn games recently that i can't see me finishing for the next few years..... Zelda next and then time for my bank account to go into administration i think!

Can't wait to play this though!

Bought this for the PS3 yesterday and spent a good few hours crawling about. Was going to get the PC version, but was a bit worried that ye olde machine wouldn't be able to handle it.

So far, so awesome. Most of the tricks that Bethesda picked up doing Fallout 3 have been rolled into this, with the big exception of VATS. It is very streamlined and for the most part, looks excellent. Two gripes, really. First, the frame rate can get atrocious out in the open, especially if you're on horseback. Second is bugs. Not kidding - the game actually crashed at the point where you select your character.

Save often, kids.

Wish I could play these games, it looks great, but I seem to be slightly retarded when it comes to computer games. It's a motion thing, I was great at 2D platform games, then it all changed and I feel sick trying to make the character look in the right direction!

This is why I only play FIFA.

My missus has the same problem in these games. She can't walk and look around at the same time. I often wonder how she manages in real life.

Having said that, modern games are a bit of an ask. If you're not truly getting proper motion sickness, I'd just advise a bit of practice. Just amble about a room until it clicks. It's totally worth it - so many decent games are in this category now.

Played 32 hours of this so far, currently a Level 30 Redguard

This is the problem, I love the look of this game, it seems fantastic but I simply do not have the time to invest into it. Would it really be worth my money if I am only grabbing an hour or two a week to play the thing?

It's worth your money in the sense that it'll probably last 50 years with that level of commitment :)

Really though, it is probably not going to fit with the amount of free time you have.

I ended up getting this for the PC as well ( missus is now on the PS3 version ). Started a new character. Last one was a Wood Elf with archery as the main skill and magic as a backup.

This time, got a High Elf with the priorities swapped. Magic first, then bows for when I'm out of Magicka or sneaking. I would definitely give the following advice to anyone interested in magic. Get up to the college of Winterhold as soon as you can. The loot you get from completing those missions is awesome, and the trainers up there can teach you spells you can't find anywhere else.

I've just got there.

Dark elf nasty assasin type concentrating on sneaking up behind enemies and cutting throats.

Second specialism is destruction (ice) magic.

Whilst I'm hidden I'm awesome but with skills spread a bit wider and I can be a bit exposed against strong enemies (snow bears) once they close me down. One-handed, desrcruction, light armour and archery are all 50-60 (am level 21). I've also done a bit of enchanting but not much.

Feeling as though I could have been a bit more focused in my leveling but its actually quite hard not to gain a few points of "non-core" skills.

It is actually pretty tough choosing how to level, and destruction seems particularly underwhelming compared to some of the quick gains you can get in sneak and archery. I've been reliably informed that destruction @ 100 turns you into some kind of arcane cannon ;)

Upto Level 37 now with 48 hours played. Pretty much owning everything, hardly touched the main quest. Just been doing the faction missions.

Completed the Companion quest-line and the Dark Brotherhood and am now on the home-stretch with the Thieves Guild, going to do the Imperial quests next and then the College of Winterhold afterwards.

I haven;t tried these suggestions to improve game performance yet but will do when I get home.

Don't worry, no spoilers

That is an awesome link for PC gamers. Nice one, mate.

On a related note, there is a mod called Skyrim4GB, which allows the game to use more than 2GB of memory ( vanilla, that's all it'll do ).

As a layman I can see that the game being able to use more memory is clearly going to be a good thing, how dramatic is the difference likely to be?

I'm running windows 7 and have 6gb ram (I think)

Well, I have been playing it almost exclusively in 4GB mode. The main difference seems to be stability, not performance. I suspect the main reason I'm not seeing a massive performance jump is it's running off an SSD, and all those areas where extra memory would help ( caching, ra ra ) are pretty fast anyway.

Ok. Sounds awesome.

3 questions...

How do I get the 4 gb mod?

How do I install it?

If it causes me issues, can I remove it again?

Answers:-

1) Go here. http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013

2) Dump it somewhere on your hard drive. Double-click Skyrim4GB.exe - it'll automatically locate your copy of Skyrim and launch it with the 4GB flag enabled.

3) If it causes you issues, just launch Skyrim as you normally would. All Skyrim4GB.exe does is set the 4GB flag before execution. Launching it from say, Steam, will implicitly launch the 2GB capped version. No real uninstallation as such. Just delete the files if you no longer wanna play in 4GB mode :D

Awesome!

Does this mean I can now avoid having to run steam entirely? If that's the case I'll be over the moon.

Thanks pap.

Unfortunately, it still runs through Steam - but I'm finding that less of a hassle ever since they introduced offline mode.

The previous version of the 4GB patch used to modify the executable and circumvent Steam entirely, but Bethesda put the kibosh on that one pretty quickly and made Steam mandatory. The beauty of the new patch is that it's a separate program, doesn't touch the original and plays nice with Steam, meaning you get all your achievements, etc.

Gave this a (very, very) quick go last night and it looks awesome.

With the 4gb mod and using the hint to change the ini file to remove mouse response delay I've been able to notch up from Medium settings to high and it looks fantastic.

Will give it another spin tonight and try out some of the other tips.

Any cheap PS3 versions about?

Opps forgot to mention that this is for the PS3 as well - same price as the 360. I believe if you go to Currys they should price match and give you 10% difference as well but not all store managers are honouring it!

Hotukdeals is the site to check out on a regular basis.

The PS3 version of this game is getting a large patch this week, if it hasn't already.

I've recently returned to the PC version and am running the beta patch, which fixes a lot of the issues people are encountering with quests. Finished the main quest ages ago, but am now moving on to the civil war stuff ( Imperial btw, those Stormcloaks tend to be a bit racialist (sic) for my elf tastes ).

I really like the fact that the side quests feel as substantial as a lot of full single player games. So far, I've done:-

1) Mages College

2) Thieves Guild

3) Companions

4) in the middle of Civil War

(have done a little bit of the Bards stuff too)

What else have I missed here?

Been doing some of the Daedric quests which are a laugh...Especially the cannabal one...Got the PS3 version and have got to level 21 with few issues...Explored most of the world and only done 4 main quests!! Completed Oblivion and am sure I will lose many more hours admiring scenery and clubbing cave bears with my Daedric mace !!

What is the PS3 patch likely to improve ?? I know there were loads of frame rate issues, but i seem to have been lucky, with only a couple of freeze issues whilst playing..

Feeling a bit ashamed to be in my forties and buying a game like this. haven't touched anything like this since the nineties, but wifey travels lots on business and I was looking for a way to waste long evenings after the kids had gone to bed. So I got this for my laptop.

I hated it at first, having never played any modern 3d games (except a bit of a go on GTA SA). I ran into walls or round in circles, while my companion did all the fighting. Never had any crashes and it all works bug free, which is nice.

I've got into it now and it's pretty good and way too addictive. They're a bit clever, because it's all very easy to do, but they manage to make it seem like you're achieving something skilful. I discovered you can get your smithing up to 100 in a couple of hours and make any kind of armour or weapon, also levelling up a lot as you do it. It's nice that there's so much to do and you can do it all at whatever order, time and speed you feel like. I can't believe I'm writing this nerdy nonsense.

One problem with that is that the enemies level up with you, so whilst your smithing is great your "fighting" stats will be a bit low for the level of enemy.

Skyrim is basically the crack cocaine of the gaming world.

Also, @Saint_Clark the Dark Brotherhood are in this game. In order to get in contact with the Dark Brotherhood you have to go to see Aventus Aretino inside the Aretino Residence in Windhelm.

You will get the Quest 'Innocence Lost' which will begin the Dark Brotherhood questline.

After you finish this quest a few virtual days will pass by and you will receive a mysterious note from a stranger and that will 'induct' you into the Dark Brotherhood in a very cool and mysterious way...

Pretty much finished off everything I wanted to achieve in the game, and will probably wait until the 'Substantial DLC'-Todd Howard (Bethesda Studios Creative Lead) before I put the disc back into my 360.

Skyrim is easily my favourite game of and THE game of the year for 2011, and my 2nd favourite game of all time behind Fallout 3.

My favourite oddity of this game is that you can be in a fight, the opponent is just swinging his sword or whatever for the killer blow, and you can quickly eat a few bowls of soup, a beef stew, twenty apples and a few pieces of salmon before he makes contact, then you're all better again.

borrowed a copy off a mate and been playing the last few weeks, but considering the amount of praise this game gets I was really disappointed by it. loved iv, but this game just didn't do it for me.

it feels slightly rushed, lots of silly glitches and I'm not a fan of the ur dead so game over style, especially when the rolling autosave is so random.

I've got to lv 26 or thereabouts so I've played a fair share but overall it feels like a single player MMO. alot of the in game mechanics that are meant to be intelligent just feel laboured.

hopefully the MMO they are making will be more fun and less niggly...

Had Oblivion a few years back on PS3. Saw Skyrim on offer at Sainsbury's and was contemplating buying it, but decided not to. Was still unsure so looked for it on Steam. £19.99 with DLCs. Have a PC that runs it pretty tidily so happy I didn't go down PS3 route. Just about to start Golden Claw/Bleak Falls Barrow quests, so still very early days.
