Albums of the year?

Recommended Posts

Is it time for this yet? Does anyone still listen to albums? Here's some of mine, anyhow...

Rustie - Glass Swords

Big bouncy beats and technicolour melodies, just like Mike Paradinas used to make. Contains all of the best pop tunes I've heard this year.

Colin Stetson - A New History of Warfare Vol 2: Judges

Breathtaking album of solo saxophone minimalist blues. He manages to sound like an entire Steve Reich ensemble on his own.

Container - LP

Lovely filthy techno sounds that rumble and buzz in a spare room.

Walls - Coracle

Another wonderful dose of sunrise synth joy to make you feel warm in the wintertime.

There's been loads of other good ones, but those are the ones I've listened to the most so by that reckoning they must be my favourites.

David Comes To Life by F*cked Up

Great rock album. Growling singer occasionally supplemented by female back-up. Three guitars! Listened to this loads, but it still retains a bit of mystery.

Let England Shake by PJ Harvey

Never listened to any of her stuff before, but this is an engaging album with a lot of variety. Great vocal. Quirky tunes.

The Antlers - Burst Apart.

I simply cannot be bothered to give you a synopsis, people are w*nkstains.

Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place

You can f*ck off if you think I'm going to tell you how wonderful it is.

SBTRKT - SBTRKT

Nee-naw nee-naw nee-naw nee-naw.

M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

They're French. I dislike the French.

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto

Yeah? I said it, so what?

The Weeknd - House of Balloons

It's not a tribute to the film Up.

Colour of the Trap by Miles Kane - Great rock 'n' roll with MOD & Northern Soul influences.

21 by Adele - Introspective and inspiring album from somebody so young, IS huge talent despite the hype.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Return to form, not immediate but a grower with every listen.

Nightwish - Imaginaerum.

Only just out but a superb album of genuine variety. Surprised at how they've managed to stay strong despite the loss of their lead vocalist and figurehead.

Within Temptation - The Unforgiving

Slightly more commercial then prior efforts but contains some of the strongest songs they've ever produced. Genuinely enjoyable.

Fink - Perfect Darkness

Mixes trip-hop stylings with acoustic songwriting. Think if Massive Attack had a baby with Damien Rice.

Laura Marling - A Creature I Don't Know

Moving away from her girl'n'guitar origins slightly and recruiting a boombastic backing band to illustrate her amazing talent, Laura's building up a very solid repetoire with this album.

Apparat - The Devil's Walk

Very hard to pin the style down on this album, think dark electro with elements of trip-hop and pop thrown in. Either way, some cracking songs on there - especially 'Goodbye'.

Dan Mangan - Oh Fortune

I love Dan's music, and like Laura Marling, he's recruited a band for his third album. Different in style to his previous records slightly, but the change illustrates his great voice and songwriting talents.

Friendly Fires - Pala

While their first album was a bit of a one-hit-wonder, this is a different matter entirely. There are some excellent tunes on here, notably 'Blue Cassette', 'Hawaiian Air' and 'Pull Me Back To Earth'.

My choices

Torae - For The Record - Proper NY hip hop with a selection of classic producers such as Primo, Large Pro, 9th Wonder, Diamond D. Real hip hop.

Lushlife - No More Golden Days - The best hip hop mixtape of the year

A$AP Rocky - LiveloveA$AP - stunning work from a hot young rapper with some dreamy beats from Clams Casino

Frank Ocean - Nostalgia Ultra - Sublime R+B mixtape that takes in the Eagles and Coldplay (stay with me here!) but creates a wonderful whole, distancing Ocean from his peers in the oft-hit & miss OFWGKTA posse

Josh T. Pearson - Last Of The Southern Gentlemen - ethereal, god-fearing country spiritual, utterly stunning

Action Bronson & Statik Selectah - Well Done - The hottest straight up emcee in the game with his second amazing album of the year. His Ghostface-style flow and food gimmick are always a pleasure

St Vincent - Strange Mercy - Expertly crafted leftfield pop with some stunning guitar work - live, this lady can shred like Prince.

Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost - builds on the promise of their superb debut, this is even better, a stunning listen from start to finish

Real Estate - Days - More catchy jangle-pop earworms, lovely stuff

Cerebral Ballzy - s/t - stunning debut from US teen street punks, exhiliarating

Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells - Everything's Getting Older - Amazing collaboration with more tales of drink, sex and heartbreak from Arab Strap leader

True Widow - As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumfrence of The Earth - imagine Kyuss playing covers of Galaxie 500 and you are only half way there.

Wu Lyf - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain - likeable debut from oddball Mancs who have crafted something truly fresh. The UK Arcade Fire?

Seany, are you still dj-ing?

Yes mate, I still do a bit here and there. I was due to be playing at the Talking Heads actually, on the 21st, but obviously that is no-go now, am doing the same gig but rearranged venue at the Bitterne Park instead on the 4th Feb, DJ-ing between some bands including the Flying Alexanders. I expect plenty of punk, new wave, ska and electro to be played that night.

I also do Goblets every now and then on a Saturday where we mix up all kinds of punk, hip hop, alternative and whatnot, and have have a few sets at the Soul Cellar playing hip hop.

Oh and sometimes I take private bookings where I don't get to play anything I want to play, but get paid more lol!

As DJ Seany S?

I might come check out the Bitterne Park shindig as that's only round the corner from me.

I dont bother much with a DJ name, I just like turning up and playing music! The Sofa City one in Bitterne should be a laugh, not sure how much music I am actually going to be playing as only going on between the three bands, but the bands are certainly interesting. Flying Alexanders are a Southampton institution, a nice bunch of lads and always entertaining!

I think on the poster for that one I am just down as DJ Sean Smith.

Is it a grower? Given it 2 or 3 listens but not really clicked for me yet. Quite different now from their twee shoe-gazing first album!

Yes I found it a grower. It is quite epic and going towards the kings of Leon. I really like their old stuff, but this will launch them, with some pretty powerful guitars, and mellow tones being a good mix.

As I only bought three "new" albums last year, and one was a re-issue, my top two of last year is thus:

Battles - Gloss Drop

Dananananaykroyd - There Is A Way

The re-issue was ***** Magnet btw, all three of their albums remastered plus extra tracks, less than a tenner, do yourself a favour and buy it you morons

A year has passed; music was made. You've all been waiting to hear what my favourite music of the year has been. Here is some of it.

Sun Araw, M Geddes Gengras & The Congos - Icon Give Thank

Sun Araw, who's been making mind-consuming space/time guitar dub architecture better than anyone recently, some bloke I've not heard of, and the bluddy Congos! A soup, a beautiful soup, of physics and spirituality.

Can - Lost Tapes

Not new music, but a ton of unheard stuff from the vintage period of possibly the best band in all of 'rock' history.

Holly Herndon - Movement

Brilliant hybrid of electronica and manipulated vocals, intimate squelchy dance and claustrophobia.

That'll do for now, I'll probably remember loads of others later.

Paul Weller - Sonik Kicks

Japandroids - Celebration Rock

How to Dress Well - Total Loss

The 2Bears - Be Strong

This year's been pretty good for music.

Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan

Killer Mike - RAP MUSIC

Joey Bada$$ - 1999

How To Dress Well - Total Loss

Death Grips - The Money Store

Chromatics - Kill For Love

Swans - The Seer

Beach House - Bloom

TNGHT - TNGHT EP

Then there's loads more records that I like but I haven't given enough time to yet that will inevitably become favourites over time. Very strong year indeed.
