England disgrace

Is Pearce the visionary we really want bringing the game forward? He is not to my mind somebody who is an advocate of silky progressive football, but more like aggression and hoof.

We really need to start right from the bottom and put into these jobs people who have studied the top European youth systems. Pearce is the dinosaur of clenched fists and big talk about passion, we need intelligence , sped of mind , not just big blokes who can command in the air

Why don't the FA finally get a grip of the problem

Pearce and sadly, Roy are just too old school to move the national sides forward

More so in the U21s, we need a manager who likes a technical passing game. I'm not his greatest fan at the tip level, but Adkins would be ideal for the U21s

As for the national team. The selections and starting line ups are just sad

You've hit the nail on the head Batman. Adkins would be the deal choice. I still cringe when I think that Steve Wigley is Stuart Pearce's sidekick. If their contracts are renewed we will have confirmation the FA have lost the plot completely. We already know that happened long ago

You Brits and your smug attitudes are incredibly hurt when you lose a Football match and get all up in arms about what "must be wrong" about the management.

How about giving Norway some damn credit? They were the better team, deserved their win, and their tactics worked flawlessly.

Norway let England run around in the heat and tire out, then blaze on forward when a good opening came up. This is not something new. The Norwegian seniors have done this since forever. Knowing that possession means absolutely diddly squat as long as you are in control defensively and can use the chances you get with efficiency. And there's no beating 100% efficiency, is there? The reality of it was that England never troubled Norway's defenders. You could have brought your best players and still come away with a goal or less.

Also fed up with reading people saying "well we beat Norway twice in the qualifiers" blah blah. When in reality those were very close games and Norway was the only team to score against England in that very qualifiying group.

Norway are a fairly average footballing nation with only a fraction of the history, heritage and consequent expectations of the English game.

Praise for Pearce's record today. Senior and U21 why is there always praise for qualifying which basically involves winning most the games you're expected to win? I.e. the bare minimum 'success'?

Pearce has proven a very poor manager. Agree Adkins would have been ideal as U21, just quietly getting on with improving players in the right way. Hope the FA do get him involved at some point. Or maybe the u21s is where a more technical foreign coach should be utilised, who knows. Little doubt there's a huge shortage up front though. Relying on Wickham and Delfoenso is terrible. Surely better strikers in lower leagues?

He's taken the u21s to a final and a semi final and prior to this tournament had a record of 5 losses in 41 and a win ratio over 50% In 6 years as manager. How does that equate to being 'very poor'? Why do tou think adkins would be so Much better? Another case of lambasting the manager without looking at the reality that is so often to case on this forum.

Doesn't matter (to a degree) which person they pick to coach the U21's as long as they are capable of following instruction - surely EVERYTHING should be directed from the top. After all, these are meant to be the players of our future and they need to be playing the game the way the Senior team Manager and the idea is for them to seamlessly progress through...

The trouble is - who should be the Senior team manager? I'm certainly not impressed by Hodgson who seems too afraid of failure to be optimistic of success

We have had entirely the wrong idea for tournament preparation and getting an international side to the level required to perform under those conditions.

Too much emphasis is put on how the England marketing machine is there to make money in the way that we play too many prestiege friendlies and concentrate on our more marketable players making appearances. It all has to be changed from the top down, they need a director of football and the respective managers of the England teams (U19s, U21's, senior) all singing from the same hymn sheet and understanding how to build an international side.

This includes keeping the best possible teams together for the underage tournaments, not whisking them away for pointless friendlies. Making more use of our technical training centre. And not picking players in a side that are too old for the next WC, whether its a euro season or not. The team needs to bed and gel and the fact you get little time to coach internationals mean that its vital to get them to gel.

The prem and the FA need to stop banging their heads together aswell, and personally if a player refuses to play in an under 21 tourney I would refuse to pick then for the full side.

Itll be a long road, so will need to ignore the media and fans clamour for overage players that just show some short term form in order to bring younger blood through. Even at international levels a team can go through transition. Hermany did, spain did, italy did.

Sadly England and the FA are more concerned with money than success.

Complaints that no players with Premier League experience were available. What about Nathaniel Clyne? Pearce hasn't even played him yet. What about Danny Rose. Pearce and Wigley are pathetic.

We have a very weak best 20/30 young players coming through, thats only going to get worse as they get less opportunity to play, the risks are too great for the premiership to trust , ready made players from abroad is the order of the day.

Very wrong of course and complete short termism and selfishness.

Against Italy.
I posted the thread in response to the Norway game, and when Pearce blamed not having players with Premier League experience. He could have easily requested Ward Prowse from the Under 18's but perhaps he doesn't rate him. If Prowsey can run rings around Man United he could have done a good job against Norway.

Probably Glenn Hoddle is the best coach available for the Under 21's. and I believe would do a fantastic job, no matter what you personally think about the man. Were he to be a success he'd be well place to eventually replace Hodgeson.

15th in the rankings now. Although Brazil having been about 20th makes a mockery of all that. Colombia bit high in 3rd too! Still, the top 10 is very good overall so England probably shouldn't be in it anymore. Definitely have the potential to be top 10 though, if there was some decent management and passion left. Doesn't help we're always aiming for 4 years later, playing players who 'might be good soon' rather than playing in the present. Rather than planning to win some mythical future world cup, we could focus on utilizing and improving what we have.

Imo the sun is setting on England being a world footballing power, much like it set on the Empire.

OK, you could argue the EPL is still competitive (although last year represented our worse performance in the CL for many a year), but its full of foreign mercenaries. The FA havent got the balls to roll back the years and change course, and besides the PL and Sky will stop them if they try. Years and years of exploiting the game for money, down to playing the same out-of-form players at national level for merchandising and brand reasons, is taking a heavy toll. There is not the innovation and fresh rock-the-boat thinking in the English game to change things. Hodgson and Brooking are dinosaurs.

We might scrape into Brazil 2014, but we will be ritually humilliated. I suspect more of the same, if we even get there, in 2016. After that the future is REALLY bleak.

To me, the watershed was reached when it was clear that the English populace didnt give a flying f**k about Euro 2012 and/or were under no illusions about our ability to win it. The newspapers were remarkably low-key, for the first time, ever.
