I'm going to have to submit and either get some cycling shorts or tights as I switch from average off road to bigger on road mileage. I'm starting to get sore.

Anyone recommend some that won't break the bank but keep the soreness down?

Try looking at Wiggle, got a lot of top class gear at reasonable prices. I got some Aeron pro shorts from them a couple of years back, suit my modest needs but I only ride once a week or so.

Depends on your budget - I generally wear Giordana bibshorts, especially when I can buy them discounted down to the £50 mark. Padded shorts at the 'bargain basement' level should be avoided. I personally avoid 'gel' pads, as imo they go out of shape too easily. Also, be careful with the sizing, most are 'Italian cut' so you need to consider going larger than you might with other clothing.

Going to go down the tights route I think. If Badger can get me some discounted Giordana bibshorts for £50 then I'd be mighty obliged. They be perfect for BST.

You can also wear padless tights over bibshorts, which gives you the option of stripping off a layer if the weather improves during a ride.

Anyone recommend some decently priced winter tights/bibs?

All depends on your definition of 'decently priced. Sticking to the £50-ish mark Altura or DHB are good vfm, or possibly these might suit, though I have no direct experience of them;

I've basically been alternating two pairs of DHB Pace Roubaix bibs for the last eighteen months or so. They are made of slightly thicker more fleecy lined lycra and are ideal for the cooler months. Tbh I've used them throughout this summer without any problems with them being too warm. I coupled them with a pair of DHB Roubaix leg warmers for colder rides, far more practical than bib tights imo. Have Pace Roubaix bib tights also. They are good too but have a zip at the front of the bib which comes undone a little too easily. This range I believe has morphed into this.

Might also want to look at Decathlon. No direct experience of the shorts, but in the last year I've picked a half price windproof jacket and half price short sleeved road top, both of which are excellent. As a brand B'Twin's top end stuff is good enough for FDJ, worn by the stage winner on Angliru yesterday.

  • 3 weeks later...

Picked up some Campagnolo bib tights for a very reasonable price now the cooler days are upon us. It was chuffing cold out on those hills last weekend in my shorts!

Underarmour with my short sleeved tops seemed to work ok. Not to keen on getting to wrapped up in too much gear and then having to stop to strip off.
