Hampshire CCC Season 2014

Wow, Balcs & Thommo have currently put on 69, great effort. I sense our batting has got complacent in the last

few weeks. We are going to have to bowl like demons.

Sterling effort by Balcs and Thommo – equal best partnership of the innings and 2 very welcome batting points. I see Gloucester put us in to bat so I’m assuming the pitch was doing something. It’s a shame Weston has left the forum – hopefully only temporarily – because, amongst other things, I found his pitch reports and inside info very useful.

We seem to have gone to pieces - fist yesterday against Somerset and now today in the CC - some very sloppy batting. They all need a right rollicking!

Situation has certainly gone downhill a bit these last couple of games. Hants made 297 thanks to a stoic last wicket partnership but Gloucs seem to have got off to decent start in their reply. With Surrey heading for another innings win we really need to get something from this game as they'll be on our heels (having played a game more) if we don't.

Bleak day, only 1 bowling point and a big win for Surrey. We can only hpoe it's a mid-season glitch.

Yeah, let’s hope so! We need some solid batting tomorrow and then a good performance on Friday night against Middlesex to get us going again. Disappointing couple of weeks.

That was the worst bowling performance I have ever seen.....what on earth did we get that Rimmington for? If he is the best overseas we can get we should stick to home grown. Woods, Smith and even Danny were smashed all over only Coles offered anything in the end.

Vince threw away his wicket again just as he got going and Carberry looks ruined by his England farce.

I have to say thats the worst team I have seen in many years - we just havent replaced Cork, Dimi, Razak, Afridid or Tahir and until we do we will struggle....rubbish

Probably because of Dawson's long term injury.

They seemed to be shoe-horning him into the team at the start of the season even when Dawson was fit. Batting Wheater at 8 and playing sides with 3 specialist bowlers. I think Dawson was in the squad for the last Championship game so will be reappearing soon.

I saw the team just before the start of the game and thought Rimmington was a youngster I hadn't heard of making his debut so was disappointed to discover he was a 30something Aussie, what's the point of bringing in an overseas of that standard for a handful of games?

I have read the recent comments on this thread so will try to answer.

Like many Test Match grounds the new drainage is meaning it is difficult to produce a balance between batting & bowling wickets although the water table level at Hampshire is not as low as some of the grounds but it does have an effect.

On Monday we produced a very green “bowler friendly” wicket but yet again lost the toss. By late on the first day, despite it still looking very green, it became flat, slow and unresponsive. That said they bowled better than us in both innings!

I have been there for all 6 days cricket. I have never seen so many players out of form at the same time in one team!

Essex is going to be difficult. Abbott has left to join SA in SL for the Tests. I was with David Balcolme on Thursday morning. His knee has swelled overnight and he is unavailable. Spoke to Woods last night and he is not yet ready for 4 day cricket. Dawson is fit and available and will play. Watched him bowl in the 2nds on Thursday afternoon and he is ready. Coles was rested from the game to keep him fresh for Essex.

Gatting was given a 2 year contract as cover. We wanted to strengthen the batting (I know!) and he had made 100 for the seconds coming into the game. I will be surprised to see him again this season!

Rimmington has an English link but he is registered to an Aussie side at present so can only bowl as the overseas player. He was only bought in as a replacement for Abbott in the T20. We have no one else that can step up to the mark!

Bowlers will be Tomlinson and Coles to open. Going to be a lot of bowling for Ervine, Vince Briggs, Dawson with back up from Maxwell & Smith

Sat with Ervine after last night’s game. He is mentally and physically shattered. Decided not to find Carberry to have a chat as he seems in a strange place at present. However he has class and will find his form again.

Thanks for some of the nice comments. It prompted me to post here. Will keep you in touch with what I can on the cricket front.

Looking forward to the Test match. Have tickets for all 5 days, private pay bar (none of this queueing) and onsite parking. :)

Isn't there thought of playing Rimmington instead of Maxwell at Essex. I thought he bowled well for his debut last night and being an unheralded Aussie, he could well do for us what Hogan does for Glamorgan and Magoffin for Sussex.

I'm also going all 5 days to the test, but do not require the parking. ;)

Thanks for posting that Weston was disappointed when you said you were stopping as always enjoyed your Hants CC insight. Apologies if what I posted was a bit off just hate seeing us so poor after so many good years.

I love watching cricket as its a release from the tension and stress of Saints.

I dont think we should be too hard on Hants, what they've achieved in the last 4 years in one day cricket has been pretty amazing. I just think other teams have caught up with us. Ervine looks like a player who needs a new challenge, bit like Jesty & Tremlett in the past, I wouldn't mind him leaving, even though he still has loads to offer. Team at a crossroads at the moment, desperately need some young talent. If I was Vince & I didn't get promoted, I would look to leave for a Div 1 side. Hard to get picked for England in Div 2

First of all, thanks Weston for the info – it’s much appreciated.

I managed to get down for one of my, sadly, all too infrequent visits to the Rose Bowl last night, witnessing what turned out to be another disappointing performance.

Like Leicestersaint I was surprised that we chose to bowl first; and like Give it to Ron I agree that Carbs seems to be struggling to come to terms with his England rejection – although it was good to see him and Maxwell sharing a laugh and joke together on the outfield after last week’s run-out debacle.

Watching Maxwell scratching around at the grease, I did find myself questioning the playing value (as opposed to commercial value) of bringing in high-profile marquee players for the T20 – it’s fine when they’re firing but when they’re not, as Wadesmith said the other day they’re virtually undroppable, and I think this puts pressure on the rest of the team.

Anyway, I’m off on my summer holidays for a week or so tomorrow; I’m going to deliberately avoid this place along with Saints and Hants news, and hopefully come back to discover that Hants have got back on track and that Saints have landed half a dozen world-class signings!

P.S. I’m very envious of those that will be watching the Rose Bowl test match, because, although England isn’t exactly my favourite team these days, I can’t think of many places I’d rather spend 5 days. Have a good time fellers!

It is very sad news about the death of Peter Sainsbury. He was a great Hampshire player - a genuine all-rounder who was in both championship-winning sides. He was one of my favourites in the 1960s when I was growing up - AND he delivered our paraffin in Bitterne Park during the winter months! A real loss - RIP Peter Sainsbury, Hampshire stalwart and legend.

I didn't see my first game until 1979, so never saw him, but he's one of those mythical figures like Shackleton or Mead, where you look at their stats & it's mind boggling. How many games did the used to play a season? Shacklton & Sainsbury took about 3500 wickets between them!

Did well to make it to 246 after that start but seems like anything that was in the pitch has disappeared with Essex currently 70-1. What has happened to our form in the last few weeks?

Also does anyone know why Shah seems to have been ditched from the T20 team? Thought he did well when he played and having that experience in the middle overs ala Mckenzie is sorely missed at the moment.

He is playing for Jamaica in the Carribean Premier League, which has just started. Can't get the much missed McKenzie, as he is playing out there as well.

At least Sussex beat Glamorgan last night. We need other results to go for us to get through the T20. Oh high the mighty have fallen!
Top 4 in each of the two leagues go through. Top 2 at home next 2 away. It is in our hands. However if we miss out on a home game it will cost the club about £100,000 in income.

Agree that if we win the last 2 matches we will go through, but given recent terrible form and that our last one is Essex away who are flying, I am working on the basis we may only win one. In which case we need Surrey to beat Somerset tonight! Trust me to make it this season to finally got to the T20 Finals day!

Oh FFS Hampshire get a grip, we've crumbled from 83/1 overnight to 120/5 and are now staring defeat in the face if we can't stop the rot. Defeat will leave us just 5 points above Surrey in the table and on a sh*tty roll of form.

Nope they didn't get a grip and were all out for 171 leaving Essex needing just 133 to win in 4 hours or so. We are throwing our season away with ridiculous batting and the usual

nondescript bowling.

We had a 60-odd point lead over Surrey a couple of months ago. That's going to be down to 5 after this game, with 4 games to play, them in great form and us falling to bits. ****s sake.

but soft, is this an Essex hari-kiri that I see before me ? 29/4, perhaps the pitch is awful or something. Still with only a few to get and a lot of overs to get them I'd not get my hopes up too much just yet. Still Briggs 3/14, perhaps the pitch is turning wicked.

Shame about yesterday. We really needed a lead of 200 on a very spin friendly wicket. Colchester is an out ground where wicket wear quickly and are unpredictable. Cannot put my finger on why our batsmen are so out of form, fatigue apart.

Anyway if we win tomorrow we qualify for T20 Bash QF with Surrey's result last night.

I simply don't understand what is going wrong - a collective loss of form or are there problems within the team? Where is the grit and determination to pull through together? That was a bad defeat against Essex - where do we go from here?
I think it is just a loss of form. I am unware of any conflict in the dressing room and as I meet with many of the teams parents during games and am good friends with some I think I would have had a hint. I also know most of the committee very well and often pass the time with the Chairman and Directors of the Ageas Bowl so again something would have come out by now. We have just got into a rut. However I do not agree it was a bad loss against Essex. It was a close loss and but for the experience of Bopara we would likely have won.
