Jermaine Wright

I had a weird "wonder what he did next?" moment about Jermaine Wright.

I remember running on the pitch, hugging him (I was f**king smashed) and telling him "you're a f**king legend" ...

His reply with a fair element of surprise; "Really??"

Had nothing against the guy, but I think it was more of a cult hero kind of thing as he was the scapegoat of the day. Although I never actually thought he was the worst on the pitch.

Anyway, that's it.

At what game was this, the Sheffield United match at the end of 07/08?

A response of 'really' though.... Always struck me as a modest pro, probably why he was shunted all over the pitch depending on Burley's mood, he knew he wouldn't kick up a stink.

Another player that gave you hope it was never too late to get spotted and fulfill your childhood dreams. Remember walking through town one night drunkly singing 'if Jermaine Wright plays for Saints so can I" ended up disappearing to the non leagues.

Still only 38. He really went down the pyramid after leaving us. A couple of appearances at Blackpool before ending up at Lewes I believe.

To think that Moyes wanted him at Everton in the year they finished 4th.

He was already in his 30s when he joined us and had the journeyman label. Alas he wasn't the second coming of Chrisy Marsden.

I remember him scoring at home to QPR, deflected effort - same game that Davis got tackled by Ray Jones trying to shield the ball out for a goal kick.

Who was he keeping out of the side when he was playing right back? I seem to remember we had Phil Ifil playing right back a few games in 07/08 too... did Ostlund really get that bad or did he get injured? Need my memory refreshing...

Was Makin with us by that point?

Makin, ex-Marseille, was with us in Wright's first year; then it was Ostlund.

Was sure he was with us until the end of that last day survival season, seemed to be always injured by that point mind.

Edit: Checked the mighty wiki: Yep, retired in April 08 due to a hip injury.

The way we failed to replace Bale, Claus and Baird after the 06/07 season and brought in Bennett (him and Makin CB against Palace, christ) and Spending £1.2m which seemed to be most of our budget on Wayne Thomas too, when we needed more than one defensive reinforment and then getting in on loan Ifil, Dailly etc, playing Wright at right back, Skacel at left back was truly woeful. Completely went for it in 06 and failed.

I remember getting a letter through the post on a Friday, saying that as I had been to Preston away (L 5-1) and Sheff Wed (L 5-0) I could have a free ticket to Cardiff away - the next day went to Hull away and we Lost 5-0 hahaha... going to have nightmares tonight.

Was convinced Burley was about to be sacked after that game. The one where Kelvin ranted at the away end after they (I was there but didn't have a go, truly) had a go at him.

Phil Ifil too, saw him against a Saints youth eleven at Kettering back in the summer of 2011. He sank quickly, even quicker then Wright.

God, Chris Lucketti. He did well, prefered him to Perry.

Naturally we kept Perry! haha. He did a job, sweated it out during the relegation season then helped us build in League 1.

Don't forget Christian Dailly!

ian Pearce in on loan, played once got injured, never played again.

How could I!? One of the heroes of Hillsborough!!

Oh and Pearce, was trying to remember him..... Wasn't he the guy that went into Non-league and strung things out for a few years? (Ok, ok, general description I know....)

I think people were singing 'England's number one' to Kelvin :D

My favourite goal in that game was Andrew Davies bouncing off Akpo Sodje like he'd ran into a brick wall.

RE: Amazing how players drop down the leagues.

I remember telling a few pompey supporting lecturers at college that Lucien Mettomo was going to save our season :o - there was a golden comment from benthelegend somewhere on him.

Anybody remember Sc=unthorpe away when we were under a lot of pressure first 10 minutes and we (JW) conceded a corner. Some random in the front row went nuts at Wright and he gave it right back to him, matey tried to get at him and Wright looked well up for it as well .... matey was seen off by the stewards and his mate and led from the ground .... long way to go for 10 minutes football even if you did nearly come to blows with the legend that was JW.

LOL at those laughing at Chris Perry, really good player for us, his legs had gone but he came in and did a decent job, and absolutely gave his all for the club.

The 5-0 at Sheff Weds was a great day out; the 5-0 at Hull in the mist was utter ****.

The game at Cardiff was not much better, though my mate and I got an individual police escort back to Temple Meads station.

Yep-didn't Vignal score a pen?

Remember us earlier that season away at Plymouth where we had more black players than the French national side. JW was the ambassador for race relations that day.

I only remember that happening after his rant.... then it was evident sarcasm and Kelvin seemed to realise how ridiculous it all was. There was a moment as he finished his rant when you could see his head drop, he knew he'd let himself down.

The 'Pompey fan on a string' song seemed to be on loop that day too.... seriously, who came up with that sh*te!?

That's the one, Mario Licka and the fatty from Liverpool came on second half (can't remember his name, plays for Barnsley last time I saw him?) We got a pen and we drew 1-1. Those were the days, we were glad of a battling point at Sc-nthorpe.

I missed the first 10 minutes of the QPR game when Jermaine Wright scored, got there in time for Kelv's clanger though.

As well as Ian Pearce, we also had Alex Pearce in on loan at some point that season, Reading donkey and totally out of his depth in the Prem last season for them, but still a zillion times better than Alan Bennett and Chris Makin at centre back together, which was so bad I actually drew cartoons on Facebook designed to capture their perennial state of separation.

That was also the one and only time Alpine was justified in his criticism of the manager, tactics, etc - the season we didn't bother to sign any centre backs until September.

Adam Hammill?

Presumably - he's been a busy traveller:

Years Team Apps† (Gls)†

2006–2009 Liverpool 0 (0)

2007 → Dunfermline Athletic (loan) 13 (1)

2007–2008 → Southampton (loan) 25 (0)

2008 → Blackpool (loan) 22 (1)

2009 → Barnsley (loan) 14 (1)

2009–2011 Barnsley 64 (12)

2011–2013 Wolverhampton Wanderers 23 (0)

2012 → Middlesbrough (loan) 10 (0)

2012–2013 → Huddersfield Town (loan) 16 (2)

2013– Huddersfield Town 24 (1)

Unbelievably he also scored 2 goals in 7 matches for England U19s and played for the U21s in 2011! Beware Saints kiddies...

Great days. That S****horpe game was Ian Pearce's only appearance for us. The 5-0 at Hillsborough was actually pretty hilarious, they didn't take the lead until just before half time and were 5-0 up after about 60 minutes. We had plenty of chances ourselves too. Thankfully I lived in Sheffield at the time so didn't have much of a journey home.

Preston was one of the few good away days in those two seasons...absolutely woeful first half followed by an amazing second half. Remember Kelvin running the length of the pitch to celebrate McGoldrick's winner.

Jermaine Wright was one of the victims of George Burley's period when he lost the plot completely. Wright did his best but he was League 2/Conference level at best. I remember in the last game against Sheffield United in 07/08?? in the opening seconds when one of our players got into a yawning chasm of space on the wing and Wright received the ball. He had about a 20-25 yard margin of error and ended up booting it straight out of play.

This was the season when we had something like 1 CB in the entire squad and Burley thought the best way of dealing with it was signing a countless amount of midfielders. I remember that players including Chris Makin and Jason Euell played in central defence and Burley insisted on playing players out of position, dropping players that had played extremely well in the game before and playing Jermaine Wright in every single game.

Didn't someone on here have a friend who owned a pub, and Burley came knocking on their door in the middle of the night wanting a drink?
