Free 5 Day Footbal Coaching course in Partnership with Saints Foundation

If you are aged between 16-25 living in Southampton or the surrounding areas and out of work then Get Started with us and achieve your goals. The Prince's Trust is proud to present you with this great opportunity where you can be taught coaching skills from professional coaches at Southampton FC whilst gaining a Level 1 Award in Coaching Football, FA First Aid and FA Safe Guarding over the space of a free 5 day course. This course will also build your confidence, communication and teamwork skills. After completing the course you will receive up to 3 months support from The Prince's Trust to help you find employment, education or training. The course runs from 16th-20th June based at The Oasis Centre, Lordshill. There are information sessions on either 4th or 5th June where you will find out more about the programme. Interested? New state-of-the-art community sports hub in St Mary`s

On Thursday 8 May, after several years of hard work, Southampton City Council’s Housing team (in partnership with the Saints Foundation and other partners in the city) celebrated the official launch of a state-of-the-art, £150,000 multi-use games area (MUGA) in St Mary’s, Southampton.

Southampton Football Club Chairman Ralph Krueger and defender Jose Fonte were among the crowd who gathered to open the new facility (the Saints Hub), which will benefit local communities in St Mary`s - and anyone else in Southampton who would like to make use of the venue. The Saints Hub has been funded by the Saints Foundation (the charitable arm of Premier League football club, Southampton FC) and the Premier League Community Facility Fund (PLCFF).

The event marked the completion of a project which has seen the council work closely with the Saints Foundation, residents of the Golden Grove estate, St Mary’s CE Primary School and Groundwork Trust over the past six years, to establish this important community sports facility in the grounds of the primary school on Ascupart Street.

Already, local school children and residents in and around the estate are making good use of the MUGA – and just in time for the World Cup! We hope they will be inspired and able to follow in the footsteps of their footballing heroes, thanks to regular football coaching sessions run by the Saints Foundation.

Nick Cross, Head of Housing Services at Southampton City Council said: “Thursday`s event marked a special achievement, after years of hard work. I am delighted our residents and local students now have a luxury sports facility to make use of, and I wish our budding footballers the best of luck…

“The council has worked tirelessly to support the project – along with our partners - and we’re grateful to our residents for their contribution to the project.

“Having also landscaped the old games area on the estate, we hope our residents will feel proud of Golden Grove – this project is just one example of the council’s commitment to improving its housing estates across Southampton, in line with what residents want, and it was great to celebrate with our residents.”

David Bruce lives on Golden Grove estate and has been involved in the project from the start. He said: “It’s taken over six years and a lot of hard work; so the whole community is delighted to see it finally open. We’ve had to apply for funding, find a site, work with the school and overcome a lot of red tape including planning and even archaeology issues to get the games area developed… A huge thank you to everyone involved. We’ve done it!”

The new facility gives the community a chance to participate in sport in a safe environment, and the opportunity to benefit from some expert coaching. Led by residents and funded by the Saints Foundation as part of their commitment to raise £1 million each year for projects which benefit communities in Southampton, the MUGA project is an excellent example of how effective partnership working can bring about big changes that benefit local communities.

Free football coaching for local children:

The Saints Foundation currently funds free open access coaching sessions at the MUGA (for anyone aged 5 - 19 in Southampton) on the following days:

Ages 10 – 19

Saturday

10 – 11am

Ages 5 - 7

Saturday

11am – 1pm

Ages 8 –11
