Says a lot without saying much. Nothing bad, far from it, but nothing that wasn't known.

Be interesting to know how much our form and subsequent exposure have been able to boost the commercial side of the Club and whether he has made any dents into the US market, where we will surely head for pre season.

Usual idiocy for the Mail. "Only the traditional big five clubs and those funded by Billionaires qualify for the Champions League. Not the likes of Southampton".

So our Billionairess not good enough, eh?

Given Financial Fair Play and her unwillingness to travel back in time and spend hundreds of millions of pounds 5 or ten years ago, yes she is not good enough to buy our way into the Champions League.

When have we, or any club that would qualify as "the likes of Southampton", qualified for the Champions League in the last 20 years?

The Mail were supporting us in that sentence anyway by setting up, correctly, the context we work in.

Maybe later......

But so far we've handled business well enough that " our billionairess " hasn't had to spend anything like the hundreds of £millions that " the big teams" has flushed down the toilet already!

Exactly. As Redslo indicates, it isn't as feasible for a Billionaire to come in now and spend barrow loads of dosh to get a team into the top four because of the FFP rules. So the mention of clubs having to have billionaire owners is largely redundant, although the Mail's scribe doesn't seem to realise that our owner was one.

Les, it's a compliment, you pillock. The scribe is simply underlining the difficulty of qualifying for CL, how unlevel the playing field is and what an achievement it would be. Accept the spirit in which it is written rather than getting your knickers in a twist over whether it's literally correct.

Who's getting their knickers in a twist? You're the one who seems to be a bit agitated, judging by your tone.

I am guessing if the journalist had written "just like Manchester City and Chelsea, Southampton are just another club trying to infiltrate the Champions League through the financial power of a billionaire owner" Les would have been absolutely fine with it.

I can see that this morning you're in an argumentative mood, judging by your contributions to the Jack Cork thread. So i'll leave you to it until your medication kicks in.

Of course it is, they just get some tame enterprise of theirs to hand you a 200 million stadium naming contract and a couple of 100 million for plastering eat five Joe's burgers a day on your shirt and it's done. Emirates Stadium, Etihad, Qatar Tourist Board, do you think they actually see much return on the funds they give their teams? If KL got one of her uncles or cousins to dob us a few hundred million for just naming SMS the Liebherr Cranes and Handling Equipment SMS we'd be wildly rich and strictly legal with FFP because it's new commercial income.

Deals like the ones mentioned are supposed to be scrutinised by UEFA. If they're not, and bear in mind, Platini and the French will suck Qatar off from here to Kingdom come, then FFP should be scrapped.

No. It is not that easy. Related party transactions are scrutinized and can cause a club to fail the FFP test. If we suddenly had huge commercial deals far beyond what is reasonable, they would be discounted to fair value. Also, Ms. Liebherr would need a relative to contribute his or her actual money since clearly it would violate the rules to launder her own money this way. See this:

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/27243933

On the other hand, if we had some rich fan with no ownership interest in the club, that might be different. If Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, for example, wanted to pay us 50 million a year to name the stadium as they would like ("Microsoft presents St. Mary's Stadium" or "GEICO Park", perhaps) that would be FFP compliant. Alas, such things are unlikely and would undoubtedly irritate many fans.

If we really want to make more money this way, we have to do it the hard way by convincing potential sponsors to sign on with us. We do this by winning, playing attractive football, and getting good publicity in places like the USA, Japan, South Korea, China, and so forth. I really think there ought to be a way to use Ralph Krueger's Hockey connections to do something--although I admit I don't know exactly what. There might be some way to link up with the New Orleans Saints using the common name for joint publicity, but again I am not an expert on exactly what or how.
