This. Unfortunately he lost the plot after that. But i guess the while team lost the plot during the game. Hugely relieved we finally got a goal and a win, maybe we can turn a corner after this.

But that was one of the worst performances i've seen from Saints in years. We really need to change the way we play.

YES! FINALLY! Not a great performance but Palace sat very deep and we did well to create as many chances as we did (even if we only got 3 of them on target). Pelle and Yoshida should've put their chances away, but one step at a time eh ;)

I actually think Pelle was a bit unlucky to be subbed - would've stuck Long up with him and taken off Djuricic but what Ron did worked so I have to be happy with that!

phew!!!. I couldn't take watching it after Palace hit the post, so I went to work instead (yep, it was THAT bad...lol). Got to work a couple of minutes of Mane had scored and then proceeded to spend the next 7 or 8 minutes pressing F5. That had to be the poorest performance of the season. So many unforced errors, so bereft of ideas. How did the subs play? Was that a turning point? Up until then I couldn't think of one player who stood out in a good way for us. Thank god Palace were equally as bad and that we had a bit of luck on our side. I know they were encouraged to shoot on sight...but 3 out of 23 on target? Some of those efforts were plainly ridiculous. I'm tying tho think of something positive. Oh yes... 3 POINTS!!!! :) :) :)

Well....

Tadic did alright IMO, gave us a different perspective and some new angles into the box - maybe gave others more confidence cos they were trying something new. His own shooting was still rubbish, though.

JWP attacked alright (his shot was saved, rebounded to set up the goal), but defensively woeful - nearly threw it away but some last-ditch tackles and interceptions from Fonte and Yoshida saved us.

Long did his usual 'lots of running and being a nuisance', which seemed to allow Bertrand & Clyne to attack more up the flanks.

You may get other opinions...

You must be joking? How long have you been supporting Saints!?! It was a frustrating performance but absolutely nowhere near one of the worst performances from us. In fact it wouldn't even be in the top 10 from the last calendar year!

It might make the top five out of the last six games.

The win was more important than the performance.

Who thinks that Pelle should be rested and Long start against Chelski ?

Koeman is mad persevering with a spent poor Pelle... Losses respect from me for picking him yet again! Why? FFs Why??? He really is very poor indeed and doesn't contribute...

Come on Koeman think outside the box a tiny little bit.....

Pelle is a confidence player. Koeman is thinking that showing a bit of faith might get repaid with the Pelle from a few months ago coming back. Personally I think he needs a bit of competition for his position, and for someone else in the team to take the pressure off him by contributing with some goals. Step forward Mane / Long.

Carp performance..... good result. Hard to believe these are the same players putting everyone to the sword a few weeks back.

I know our striker (with perhaps some justification) is getting some stick about a lack of goals but could we get a free scoring central midfielder on the shopping list for next season? JWP and Davis have scored zero goals this season and Victor and Morgan have managed 6 between them (Morgan not scoring since September) we could really do with more goals from midfield someone with a eye for 30 yard screamers would be nice.

Start them both - Pelle needs some help up top and Long is the nuisance player to take advantage of knock downs and will get under the skin of Terry and co.

Exactly what I said to a mate when Long came on for Pelle. Would have liked them both on, if only for 5-10 mins.

Don't agree with that tbh, he won a lot in central positions today but he had nobody near him to collect his flick-ons - a role that Shane Long is perfect for. Start Long in Elia's place against Chelski and make sure the forwards get tight to him. Pelle won't improve from the bench

Just sat in car after the game

Played alright. Still trying to walk the ball in the net.

Better side but they looked dangerous on the breaK.

Morgan was my MoM

Djuricic was very good also

Forster made some good saves

Pelle was poor

Clyne was poor

Both CBs seemed iffy at times

Any win is welcome though.

Ironically, it took a (pretty poor) shot from the edge of the area to produce the goal. Why we do not try that more is a mystery

Are you Dave Merrington in disguise?

I don't know what we did differently with Tadic tonight but he looked much like his pre-christmas self when he came on, really livened us up a bit. Also impressed with Djuricic, not sure why the the commentator was saying he wasn't very good on the stream, made a few great runs forward just to be fouled in the end. Not a good game, not a good performance, but a great win. I don't think we have 'turned a corner' in terms of our quality in front of goal but it's definitely something off our backs having finally got that elusive goal.

Agree, while he's benched he can study Edin Dzeko's off the ball movement.

I would like to say I don't blame pelle at all for not scoring, the only time I can remember him not playing was the Sheffield United game, all players need to be rested, form comes in cycles, the biggest issue was someone was obviously gambling on jayrod/Gallagher etc being fit hence no centre forward (although he's not a proper CF).

The dude genuinely needs a rest for a few games to get his freshness back

Great win, deserved.

Mane is out most threatening attacker and has a habit of scoring crucial goals, great finish.

Word for Pelle. Played well tonight IMO and would have been nice to have him at the end to hold the ball up.

Long showed he can be an ok impact sub option, but also showed the aspects of his game that mean he will struggle to start games for us.

Wanyama and Clyne a little sloppy at times. Djuricic looked promising, some nice touches and a burst of acceleration. Great option for games where JWP/Davis not needed, at home vs teams that camp behind ball.

Tadic did well and IMO should start over Elia. Has composure at key moments.

Yoshida picked a bad time to have his most iffy game for a while. Toby back for Chelsea.

Forster recovered from a dodgy first half moment with some vital second half saves.

Final word for Palace. Decent team who actually looked to attack (fair play) and great fans.

It was sh*te and only a fool would deny that IMO.

The number of times we gave away the ball, passed it into the box and back out again, wasted dead ball opportunities, put in lame crosses and long balls, came close to tackling our own teammates, and made goalkeeping fumbles exceed any game I can remember this season.

We were also extremely lucky that Palarse messed up the best 2 chances of the game, despite barely having the ball!

thank F**k for 3 points. We can only improve on this performance?

Onwards and upwards Saints!

I do. I've got nothing against Pelle, unlike some of the people round me, but we looked much better when Long came on.

glad i'm not the only one who thought Djuricic had a good game.similar to his liverpool performance only way they stopped him was by fouling.Pelle on the other hand was worse than he was against WBA woeful.JWP good and bad in equal measure.

Can we go back to being a struggling team fighting relegation it was easier to take than this teasing us with next level flirting ;)

20 shots off target is inexcusable.

We may have had a bit of luck but we were the much better team tonight by some distance.

Just back from the game.

What a relief.

I hugged a stranger.

All about the 3 points tonight. Toby will be back for the next game. Full squad near enough. Time to take stock, re-group and push on again.

COYS!!!!!

Just a thought, how long before Jay Rod is back ?

Exactly. Djuricic was one of the few bright sparks we had and deserves to play in the next game. Pelle....until the Swansea game (I think) he was not scoring but was contributing in other ways. That hasn't been the case since. I really want him to come good but am afraid he doesn't merit a place in the team at the moment. I know Long is not an inspiring alternative, but at least he provides some more movement.

Also, Elia has provided little of note in the last 3-4 games. He takes too long on the ball, his crossing is sub-par and he lacks composure when presented with a chance.

Wanyama has lost his way, Morgan was also no great shakes. He can't be the main creator of our play if we want to be a top 4 side; that's not his strength.

We are getting no penetration from midfield and can't seem to create any space when a team sits back.

But, we won! And scored a goal! So, all good for tonight :-)

TGFT!!!!!!!

Now, did the ref not book 27 (delaney) twice in the game or not?? No one else mentioned it on here but everyone around me thought so.

Says on Sky Sports that McArthur was booked on 30mins and Delaney later on. I only watched the 2nd half so can't help otherwise.

Wins a win, keeps us on course for Europa League, which must be the aim now. Hopefully we will get back on track. I'd certainly start Long against Chelsea, he looked lively, and Pelle won't get a look in against Terry and Cahill. Oh, and JWP was awful when he came on, the whole great player, dead ball specialist thing is a myth.

I thought so.

Strange performance from Palace, would have thought they'd have gone with similar tactics to the cup game when they caused us all sorts of problems in the first half.

No matter, it was great to see us get the win.

I feel like I've just had an orgasm after a month of abstinance, powered by plums the size of planets.

There was something different about the game today. I told my brother I could feel something was going to happen this game. The crowd were a bit more up for it, and it was a pleasure to see the Itchen North going for it for much of the second half. People may not be fond of the continual OWTSGMI, but I wouldn't be one of them. It's not only our song, it also denies the other side the opportunity to support. After they were singing about us being quiet, bless them.

My bro reckoned we looked like we had an extra man after Pelle was substituted for Long. I kind of agree. Maybe just the rub of the green, but even the part of his job he's still doing is starting to look a little suspect. Noticed a few aimless wins go off to Palarse defenders.

Palarse weren't really that great, but proof that you don't really need to be a coherent, passing team to be a danger. Minutes before we scored, they almost did. Twice. In those awful seconds, it really did feel like it was going to be another one of those games. Mané had other ideas, thankfully.

Big Vic had another solid game, taking responsibility and winning the ball all over. Morgan's corner delivery looked dangerous today; someone should have been and will eventually get onto the end of them. Clyne and Bertrand were competent, but not at their best. I was encouraged by some of the swift play in the first half. Djuricic looks like he's going to be a useful acquisition once fully integrated into the team. Elia was disappointing. Forster looked mostly solid. I want to see more of Shane Long in a Southampton shirt. Mané is probably my man of the match.

His goals have been decisive in a couple of games, including tonight - but we've just come through an awful drought. I'm not getting carried away just yet.

Still, 3 points and a bit of pressure on the teams playing tomorrow night. That'll do me.

Reset the sex clock. Southampton FC have finally scored.
