England Team Tonight

Now I know the team tonight hasn't yet been announced but if the BBC article is correct then Gibbs, who can't get a game ahead of Monreal at Arsenal, gets the nod over Bertrand. Last time out, Jones, who shouldn't get a game anywhere, got the nod over Clyne....and we wonder why England are so ****e.

FWIW

Hart

Clyne Smalling Cahill Bertrand

Wilshere Milner

Oxlade-Chamberlain Sterling Walcott

Rooney

Not convinced by Smalling or Wilshere but due to lack of other options this is probably the best I can come up with. If nothing else, it has pace!

I gave up all hope with England a very long time ago.

In fact the only hope i now have is that they fail to qualify so that the FA actually DO something about the state of the national side.

Including getting rid of that embarrassingly cringeworthy 'band' who keep getting allowed in

The last time I was remotely interested in England was the incredible performance by Beckham against Greece.

Watching England is woeful.....and I don't see that changing for the foreseeable future.

Ridiculous decision making from top to bottom.

If we don't win today, believe it or not,I'm led to believe Wales will go above us in the rankings.....no offence to the Welsh.....but that is disgusting if true.

Personally I'd go with

Davis

Clyne Stephens Turnbull Targett

Ward Prowse cork Reed Bertrand

Rodriguez Gallagher

Cork obviously included because he's the best midfielders in the history of Soccerball and should never be sold. The rest of the team goes by our selection policy of *insert name of saints player* is the answer, what was the question?

we'll probably end up going 4-4-2, don't think Ox was called up because of injury.

hopefully leaving Clyne out last game was just to see if Jones would be able to fill in as a RB in case Clyne gets injured...Andy Townsend was saying Phil Jones should cement that 'open' position for himself...

As for Gibbs, god no. Please tell me it won't even take a PFA TOTY place to convince Woy that he's the best option

I care little but will probably sit through the match while moaning about how much I dislike watching England.

I will also get excited every time a Saints player touches the ball, even if it is Clyne who looks like he may not play for us again.

you watch. Gibbs will play ahead of bertrand. When Ryan is clearly the better player and had a better season.

Milner is guaranteed to play

Sterling should be dropped for walcott

we will probably win 1-0, rooney will score and roy will be smug as anything. despite the performance being bang average

The last time I cared about the English team was when Lambert first made the team. Before that was when they played the USA in the world cup and my caring was negative.

Do what? They have more investigations and obsess about the 'problems' more than any country. We produce good players, they do well in the leagues, yet our national side just throws caps at any big club players and we hire poor managers who either don't care much or are inept, and/or biassed.

Why on earth hire a foreign manager with no english experience? I have no problem with a foreign manager, but surely they should have managed in england before and know the language and players a bit.

Big club bias, bizarre selections, no balls to actually drop big names, poor tactics, endless line up changing.

You can only complain about lack of talent once you've seen your team fulfil their potential and fail. I haven't seen England consistently pick the best possible line up and play their best in nearly 20 years.

But yeah, Hodgson will ignore decent players, try and fit Rooney, Kane, Sturridge and Sterling in, lose badly at the euros and the FA will bang on about B teams and winter breaks again, as if that will someone make the manager not pick Chris Smalling.

England needs to appoint Tony Pullis as their next manager.

agree with that. Sterling should be no where near the starting 11. (or the squad given his form). Be interesting if he plays tonight, more so with the form of walcott lately

Why give up hope with England? They're your country regardless. Saints aren't a top team either and never have been, does that mean you stop caring?

Totally agree. I can't stop supporting England just like I can't stop supporting Saints. It's your country FFS, just because we are not very good doesn't mean you should give up, this sounds like the big club plastics. Did you all give up on Saints when they were in L1?

People moaned when Sven took us to 3 quarter finals but perhaps that was our level and perhaps we are at our level now. We simply don't have that many decent players. Look at the team, many of them don't hold down regular places at club level. It's no good blaming Hodgson or the FA. Look at the big clubs who would much rather buy a top player from abroad than bring through a youngster.

But get behind England anyway, as I said its your country.

Rant over, suns out.

This. A bit of cynicism is healthy but honestly, what are we expecting?

We are a good, not great, side. We achieve about what we should expect to do. We are, as it goes, the best team in qualifying if you take the stats for what they are. We have some decent young players in and around the side. There are lots of saints connections and we may continue to see more.

Winning another trophy would be nice and a bit of magic like we used to see from Beckham or Gascoigne would be much appreciated but honestly, are things really that bad?

Because most football fans are compete and utter crumpets and it's fashionable at the moment to have a downer on england. When there is a performance which isn't brillaint then people like Adrian Durham do a great job of whipping the nation up into a frenzy as to how bad we are and the players don't care. Then Mugs like most that post on here suck it all up and pass it off as their own views.

We have enough decent players to perform better than we do. Wales, Belgium, Northern Ireland etc are outperforming because they have cameraderie and a willingness to give all from a public who back them. Part of the problem is that playing for England seems to be a burden for a lot of players - they expect to get chastised, and they do. Its a vicious circle. I dont know how we break out of that, maybe we cant with the kind of press and media Britain specialises in.

agree with that.

when was the last time you saw England and thought, they gave it everything? Italy in the world cup? that was about it in years.

we have a manager who plays such boring, safe, uninspiring football. Such big club bias in squad selections. Players like Delph, Clyne have to perform brilliantly for much longer periods of time before getting a look in and if they drop off a bit they will be out.

you see wales, Norther Ireland and many other smaller/lesser nations...even the USA playing nice, vibrant football given the respective talent levels they have.

how on earth has milner got so many caps. why does hodgson rarely pick another keeper in friendlies. why the hell did austin not get a look in the other day....these are things said time and time again with England

I won't ever stop supporting them but at the moment they are so dull, uninspiring and full of mediocre players that get in by virtue of the club they play for that my interest has significantly waned.

Maybe if I went to the matches it would be different but games at Wembley are devoid of atmosphere and I can't afford to be flying all over the world watching them away - all the spare money I do have is taken up with Saints away games as it is.

Mine too. In particular, Smalling, Jones and Evans shouldn't be allowed anywhere near an England defence, even though they do play for Man Utd.

Sums him up. Ages in the job and he doesn't believe he or his team are good enough to go and beat Slovenia well. 10 men behind the ball, inspiring stuff

So tragic isn't it.

We may not be world beaters but we are better than hoping to get a lucky win away to Slovenia

Then again, Roy thought we were good at the World Cup. The man is so depressing as England manager

"We are concentrating on breaking them down, scoring goals and - if I'm brutally honest - winning," he said.

"I'd take a show or a lucky victory. At the end of the day winning or not getting beaten are the important factors."

Not really much wrong in that is there?

Just find watching England so tedious at the moment.

Clyne & Bertrand should obviously start (even two work mates who are Chelsea & West Ham fans agree on that). But they won't

Still, Ricky scoring for England as a Saints player vs Scotland was one of my all time best moments in recent times. Wonder if there will be any more as good as that?

I don't want him to come out and say 'I'd take a lucky win', I want him to say 'we will demonstrate why we DESERVED our win'. I want the players to have 'fire in their bellies', a desire to prove their superior ability against what should be a lesser team. Roy is about as inspiring as the skin on cold custard, and as tactically inept.

Well he didnt say that did he? He was simply making the point that the most important thing is a win. Perfectly reasonable.

Has to be said that if that is the best that England can muster these days, it demonstrates how poor we currently are. Agree that Clyne and Bertrand would make it look better, but it really does show that we probably currently have the worst group of players in history.
