Saints Fans Banned

Just cant believe that the Spurs fans' would moan about this, they call themselves Yids for a start anyway, actually sang it our game. Whilst imitating gas chambers etc. is a bit more than just banter perhaps, some people need to get a life. As for the Nazi gestures, well John Cleese made a living from it.

Perhaps we should start taking picnics to the football with the extended family, make a whole day of it.

John Cleese stopped being funny about 40 years ago.

It’s all part of football.

Spurs fans have been known to sing about Hillsborough to wind up Liverpool

Liverpool have been known to sing about the Munich Air Disaster to wind up Man Utd

Man Utd have been known to sing about the Leeds fans who were killed in Istanbul.

I doubt many of the fans sing these things for any other reason but to wind up / provoke a reaction from other fans.

In this case unfortunately they are able to give this a political / racist twist as it implies the fans have a hatred of jews, rather than of Spurs which is clearly their real motivation.

Just 2 fans? ahahaha.

I was once threatened with arrest in the Archers for singing something about Berkovic after he'd joined West Ham. When I pointed out to the copper that about 1000 other people were also singing it he turned around and said "but you're nearest"

Just hope no one grassed them up. No one likes a grass.

It states in the article that a steward reported them to the police and they were arrested at the time. Doing his job I would say.

Regardless, everything in the ground is recorded on CCTV. So a grass really isn't required to capture bellends like this making tools of themselves.

Those two guys sit (well did) on the same row as me at SMS about six seats away. Clearly I was highly engrossed in the quality on pitch entertainment because despite being sat only a few feet away I never heard or saw any of that amazing that two spurs fans sat in the away end could hear them hissing over the general din and I missed the whole thing. Didn't even realise there was a problem until one of them got escorted out just as the second half started. Still no place for that crap in this day and age.

Should have been lifetime bans really.

Unfortunately football will always attract the odd low life chav with little intelligence. These people´s only release is to shout abuse every Saturday for 90 minutes and claim it is "part of football" or "banter" as people have tried to do above.

Well it is a part of football that the vast majority of bright and reasonable people would rather do without. Hopefully these 2 will do some growing up in the next 3 years.

It should not be a part of football or society. Get real.

Do you accept violence as 'part of football'?

Lifetime bans for behaving like a moron at a football match? What they did was stupid, they've been given a considerable punishment, can't see why anyone would demand more than that.

Doesn't make it right though. All of those those examples are deeply unpleasant.

Just like making monkey noises and throwing bananas at black players used to be. There is no excuse.

i think racism is lot more personal. You are degrading someone because they are black (for example), whilst in this instance you are not necessarily making it personal.

You Fat Bastard? I guess that's not acceptable either?

There seems to be a fair bit of nonsense or stupidity here. I will try to put some thinking into my response.

First, John Cleese may well have made the Nazi salute as part of a sketch, but he did not making a living with anti-semitic remarks.

Second, you man not think that John Cleese has done anything funny recently, but 40 years ago predates Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and Fish Called Wanda. And his recent appearances on American talk shows have been funny.

More importantly, whether or not Spurs fans should be calling themselves Yids, the appropriate response is some version of "our club is better than yours" or "we are going to beat you today" not facist salutes or imitating the sound of gas chambers. If cannot see this distinction, your brain is broken and you should have it checked out immediately.

In any case, the appropriate response to someone filing a complaint about racist behavior is not telling the complaining party to get a life, but is complimenting them on their willingness to spend their time and risk abuse to improve the world by identifying a problem and trying to fix it.

The fact that fans of various other clubs have at times said inappropriate things about the events in Hillsborough, Munich, and Istanbul is not a reason to excuse or encourage similar behavior. It is a reason to be more vigilant when such things occur and work harder to stop this kind of behavior. Football's problem is not too little bad behavior by fans at the matches. A claim that the fans say these things only to wind up the opposing fans is not a valid excuse or justification. If anything, it is worse than the expression of racism by an actual racist who, at least, has the virtue of truthfully expressing a deeply held belief, not just trying to cause trouble. Of course, racist chanting cannot be excused on that basis and it is, in fact, one of football's big problems.

To put it another way, it is possible to express a dislike for the Spurs without being a hateful bigot. Saints fans could, for example, chant about how they stole our song. One could also express curiosity about exactly what a Hotspur is. (I actually don't know but will look it up now--ok that didn't really help.)

Holy Grail was 41 years ago actually, so I will claim 1/3 of a point. I don't generally watch American talk shows.

As an aside I did meet him a few years ago when he was in our office recording something or other for the BBC.

Never thought that would happen.

Rape, murder, deomestic violence, ISIS, thrd worls poverty, global warming. yeah, they're just all part of life. No problem. FFS????????

Like other posts say, things are changing - no more bananas and monkey noises. One day that will also catch up with you (unlikely), your kids (hopefully), Noodles and all you other racists.

I thought the facts about the banning order were the best bit..they have to hand in their passports when major games abroad are on..as that is very unlikely to involve us, is that any big game?

I assume it could be only related to us..so job done or does it include when England play or is it extreme like big euro games involving English clubs like when arsenal go to Barcelona. Does it include the El Classico or even just Bayern v Dortmand? And who enforces it? Do the police check the fixture list and tell him when to hand it in at the start of the season and then up date for cup draws etc...

Lol so many questions!

It's a couple of young lads shouting something offensive at a game of football. Glad you have balance and perspective in your life.

Every England away game, every Saints competitive away game in Europe. If we had a run in Europa you'd be without your passport for half a year!

Stop being a dimwit. My point was their 'crime' was motivated by football and not some deep hatred of the Jewish religion, yet it was reported as if they had targeted Jewish people as a hate crime, if they'd sang other offensive songs they'd have just had a warning as opposed to arrest

Nothing dimwitted about the post as the sentiment is clear and taking it to the extreme to make a point, the posts that fall into that category are the ones that imply it's a bit of banter. The views of these lads are plain and simply stupid but have a root somewhere far darker that isn't good. To ignore it suggests a slight tolerance of it. I'm glad they have been banned, their actions have no place in an intelligent and tolerant society. Shout and have a go all you want but it would be much better if people could leave race, gender, sexual preference and religion out of it.

Why is it not the same offence to sing about Hillsborough or Munich?

You would need to prove Liverpool or ManU fans were distinct, defineable minority groups/cultures and were targeted with a hate crime because of that. So yes the same offence! LOL

But surely it's much more likely that someone who was at Hillsborough or had friends/family injured/killed there would be in the Liverpool end, then anyone directly affected by the holocaust would be in the Spurs end. So surely more likely to be directly offensive to people actually there?

^ I guess that would just be plain old being very rude, insensitive and offensive to individuals affected by a tragedy. Rather like, say, taking the **** out of relatives of Zeebrugge Ferry victims would be?

Police might arrest you for using "threatening or insulting words or behaviour" or something like that but would struggle to make out it was a hate crime in the Hillsborough example, but could in the Spurs example.
