Southampton vs Chelsea Post Match Throw away

No shame in losing to Chelski as they are obviously a quality side.

However we shot ourselves in the foot with some big mistakes. I don't blame Pelle because when he gave the ball away it was in their penalty box and had to go past 10 other players. He should of held the ball up for sure but our defending in the last 30mins was comical. VVD should of done much better for the second. Probably the worst game he has had for us imo.

hardly a throw away. I would say they were a fair bit the better side.

we defended resiliently in the main but they pushed very hard and we struggled in the end

Clasie and Rom were good

Davis was poor

Austin was alright

Long was good

I felt that when pelle came on we had nothing up top. As normal, he hardly moves, hardly wins the ball or holds it up and utterly wasteful in possession with his stupid flicks.

the set up we have now, we cannot afford pelle in the side as we have to hit our forwards early and stretch the game for our midfielders to support. When pelle is on, the ball comes back a lot more quicker and from nearer the halfway line and our midfield have not moved up enough. we are then defending far deeper

but to be fair, chelsea were all over us mostly in the 2nd half and they are on serious form (like us)...close, edgy and good game.

Beaten by the better side. nothing more than that.

on to bournemouth

Romeu was my MoM.

Beaten by the better team and that's all, really. Can't fault the first half performance and second wasn't bad, just a yard off an improved Chelsea. I do wonder whether we started conserving energy second half knowing we've got a game Tuesday. Missed Wanyama a bit and Long when he went off.

Costa got VVD riled up and it really affected his game. I've been a Pelle supporter for the most part but you don't try those fancy flicks with the game poised as it was...you just keep possession. That was old Saints in the last 15 mins.

Let's hope everyone forgets about it and moves on

Did we create any chances of note other than Long's header over the bar, and the goal (which was an absolute gift from Baba)?

I thought we looked comfortable at the back in the first half, but disjointed in attack throughout, which worsened when Pelle came on. Lots of hopeful crosses, not a lot of quality. Davis had two bright moments in attack, but was a complete liability in possession.

Once Willian and Hazard started getting on the ball in the second half, they pretty much battered us for 40 minutes.

Can't say they didn't deserve it on balance, but frustrating to see our defence, which has been so solid in recent games, give away two soft goals.

Once Long sent off we were completely blunt as an attacking force. Pelle couldn't keep the ball and Mane couldn't stay inside.

Have we ever won after a 2-week break?

The team own dumb fault. Probably good that we lost cause they were getting way too cocky thinking nobody will score anyway.

Just a matter of time before balls fly in when you sit that far back and you let Chelsea pass around without even pressing a little bit. I dont get why you would do that, first half showed how many mistakes Chelsea makes when you put some pressure on them. And why Pelle was brought on the pitch is even a bigger mystery to me.

Shame, really unnecessary loss.

Agree with all this.

a draw would have been nice but there is definitely no shame in losing.

PS Costa is the biggest c*nt in the PL.

Agree with all this, spot on. Even the announcers noticed when Long and Austin were gone we weren't making runs and opening the field. As stated, the ball would come right back in keeping the pressure on, and giving our defense no break. I don't fault the defense, although it wasn't at its best. However any team constantly resetting the game from the just outside the box is going to score

Don't think we deserved to lose. Made them look pretty ordinary 1st half. Long going off and being replaced by the "flick" specialist made no sense to me. At least bring on Mane who has pace. Thought it all went to pot once he came on and Costa started the aggro. Yellow card fest, lost focus. Threw it away in the end. Who would have guessed 12 months ago that Long would be so essential to us. Didn't miss Vic one bit. Romeu and Clasie excellent. Will be quite happy to wave goodbye to Graziano and Mane come Summer (unless they start performing again) Oh well, taking my wife's advice "move on".

We looked like the away team, couldn't maintain possession and invited Willian, Hazard and co to run and pass into dangerous areas - something had to give. I thought Mane should have been on earlier and Pelle's arrival put even more pressure on a retreating midfield and defence. We would have been very fortunate to nick that 1-0.

Well, we did well but up against a ref who went yellow happy and looked to switch off and thought job done at 70 mins.

Not happy.

Onto Bompey.

For once I am going to be pragmatic after an annoying defeat and look at the facts dispassionately. Chelsea were much better than us in the 2nd half and on the balance of play, if there had to be a winner, they deserved to be that winner. Our subs may have contributed to Chelsea being the bettter side in the 2nd half, I am no Pelle hater but I winced when Ron put him thinking this is not the right time or player in this situation, and the wince proved justified.

Austin had a close shot in the first half, and I thought we could have been given a penalty kick on Austin's run in the 2nd half.

It all went wrong when out talisman went off. If there is anyone left that underestimated Longs importance to the side then this dispelled all doubts.

He was the only one who looked confident. Austin wasn't at it and Pelle's clearly lost belief from being dropped. You could see Koeman with his arm round and geeing him up when he came on. Baffling substitution.

On reflection the goals were pretty soft.

Bit of a sickener that, but they were all over us for most of the last 60mins without having lots of clear chances.

Clasie had an excellent game for us, hope he can manage the Bournemouth game too.

Costa also showed how to cleverly influence a game in your teams favour even if its crossing the line somewhat. We became more botheree about them than us after that.

Basically though we stopped being a threat when Long went off. Mane should have come on. Pelle was pretty much at fault for the first goal, had two simple passes on offer and completed neither taking him and Cedric out the game. He then got worse.

We largely did well but I wonder if the 5-3-2 only really works with Long's work rate and ability to run the channels.

If we are without him for a bit then might need to revert to a back four, or at least partner Mane with Austin.

Two very winnable games to come now...

Pelle cost us the game? Behave. Chelsea smothered us for most of the game because they have class players.

We did ok but we simply don't have creative midfielders like hazard and Willian. We have ball winners and passers. They were simply too good. Don't look to dig out your own players. That's a billion pound football team and we aren't. They have that extra class that most don't have.

Thank you for the Chelsea view.

They have good players, but we were containing them.

austin and mane then, surely

anyway, RK reaction to the defeat....

We played well in 1st half.

we defended well

2nd half we had problems keeping the ball

we still defended well

we dropped too much back

Their 1st was unlucky for us

it was a cross not a shot

Linesman flagged for something, i think it was a foul on cedric but the ref disagreed

we still dropped further back

we started to not keep the ball up top which did not allow defence to get up

dunno if was a penalty on austin. could not see it really

we have to wait on long, he has a hamstring problems, we will know more tomorrow

long is working well, on form and a dangerous player at the mo

scored a fantastic goal

Austin was working well, made it difficult for chelsea

but 2nd half we defended too deep

nice for fraser to get the record

we were well organised mostly today.

we dropped too much, we have to press better and keep the ball better than we did in the 2nd half

We were ok and matching them up until the bit in the second half when the ref lost control and started to hand out yellows like confetti. How the Chelsea players especially Costa get away with talking to refs like that is a mystery to me. Our players just seemed to switch off after that letting players of Chelsea's calibre have so much of the ball after that was fatal. Why Koeman went for Pelle instead of Mane after Long was injured is a complete mystery.

A lot of us were called "bullies" a few weeks ago for bemoaning the fact Pelle had been bought back into the fold, but **** me I'd like to see anyone try to defend that short but costly display from him today.

Chelsea played well, great movement between their front players, it was very hard for us to contain them for 90 mins - which is why it was frustrating that the first goal was so weak. But we did play well for the majority of that game I felt, very organised and disciplined in our play and kept them at arm's length - although they did start to raise the bar after 60mins or so.

We lacked a real threat once Long went off. I personally would have put Mane on instead, as having that pace in behind stretches teams and can make so much difference. So that was a bit frustrating, as that substitution did really play into Chelsea's hands.

But lots of positives. Loved Romeu's performance, although the midfield did tire as the game went on I felt. Onto the ''Derby''...

We have had a good run. Chelsea are resurgent under the caretaker chappie and are a class team, so no shame, especially considering we were really good in the first half especially.

Learn the lessons - i.e. need to improve fitness levels and Pelle is a bit of a liability presently.

Then move on to the win we shall surely enjoy on Tuesday.

Do you type all that out or do you have some kind of app that put's Koeman's words automatically into print?

1st half was pretty even possession wise but we had the much better chances - Long does what he always does misses a good chance but then makes up for it with a good goal. 2nd half Chelsea upped there game whilst we sat back reminiscent of our bad run where we got scared in the 2nd half when teams tried to attack us. Classie and MOM Romeu were brilliant so we didnt miss Wanyama in the slightest - Pelle was not the reason we lost this it was sitting back too much. If anyone was at fault it was Forster but no one can be critical of him breaking our record for number of minutes without conceding. In the end of the day we will lose matches and it was just one of those

Frustrating game.

We were good first 30mins.

They dominated a large chunk of the rest and did look excellent. If I was a Chelsea fan I'd be p****d off we weren't top of the league, not celebrating like they'd just won it at the end.

I thought Romeu and Clasie were excellent. Pellè didn't do himself any favours.

But the game showed the problem of 5 at the back - we're outnumbered across the rest of the pitch and were therefore unable to keep the ball, it kept coming back towards us and let Chelsea keep building pressure.

Think we'll kick on and win at Bournemouth now.
