Saints Transfers Thread - Deadline Day

Saint Charlie

I think we need to spend money on a player at their peak who will likely see out their contract, even if it means no resale. If we always invest in potential, by the time they realise that potential, it'll be with another team. Pretty much our whole team have an insane resale value, so having one or two who can bring us Exp right now would be a wise move. At some point we need to actually win something.

Yes, we probably could win something with this strategy. Like Portsmouth did. Leeds were awesome for a while with this strategy. QPR tried it but the missed out on the initial success. The common thread - they are all f#cked now and in the lower leagues. Thankfully the people running our club are not cretins.

You're not after much from one player!! Any suggestions of who?

My knowledge of European football is woeful, so forgive me for going for well known English based players, but Demarai Gray and Josh King would add some much needed pace back into our attack. Gray tore us to pieces, albeit demonstrating Long-like finishing in that game. I suggested him when he was at Brum and still think he has great potential, if not somewhat expensive. King is another that would cost the earth now.

I quite like long, but selling one of him or Austin makes sense ( provided we replace). Both are reaching the end of their usefulness, with Charlie's injury record & Longs age. I can we'll see a situation next summer where it hasn't worked out for Gallagher ,Charlie's been in & out the side & Long is Long but a year older. We could need to replace all 3 in one window. Add into the mix the possibility that Gabbi scores 20 goals and becomes our next transfer saga . To swap the oldest for a younger model this summer makes sense imo.

Gray wouldn't improve us imo and isn't the 7,9,10 and 11 rolled into one that the fella was saying we should sign. King is a great 9 and I'd take him in a heartbeat but I reckon he's well out of range now.

Spunking a bucket load of money on a player who will have next to no market value at the end of his contract with us sounds like a pretty poor idea IMO.

Getting the best years out of a player is worth the investment. I've said it before, we need to mix our purchases up a bit. Some young with potential, and some around the 28 yr old mark. Good pro's who'll give us their best years and whose experience would be invaluable.

Lawrie was great at this.

no idea what a 7,9,10 and 11 rolled into one is. I thought the aim was to replace Long, should he leave? Agree the ship has sailed on King, probably on Gray too.

My comment that you quoted was in response to someone saying that we need one player who can do a job up front, as a 10 and out wide. I asked who he had in mind.

Thorgan Hazard is one such player. 2 years left on his contract, would probably cost around 20m euros.

I cant be arsed trying to find a player that can play in every position. Where does a 7 play by the way? Who cares? All that matters is finding a player that can play in an attacking role, which Gray can.

For me Gray is a perfect example of someone who called play out wide, and also play behind/off a striker. He also absolutely would improve us, in my opinion, but I reckon his sights are probably set a bit higher, Tottenham/Liverpool signing probably.

Also Barkley fits perfectly the profile of player we look to sign; Young, clearly very talented, burst on the scene but has lost his way and now looking for a fresh start/challenge. Sadly he's English so there's about as much chance as the Pope starting in holding midfield for us.

To sit on the bench. He was on Leicester's bench a lot.

He's a good player but not that different to Redmond so far. More talent than Boufal? I don't know. We have inconsistent wingers who don't score many already. While he's good, it's not really an area to throw £20m+ at right now.

Agreed. Rather than multi function players who won't improve our first 11 we need specialist players to improve us where we are weak. Personally I'd like a proper attacking midfielder to play behind the striker. 3 strikers are enough and I'd happily lose long if it means bringing in a decent attacking midfielder and making do with what we have out wide and up top.

No chance imo but him in front of Romeu and the new guy, and behind Gabbi would be superb. Let Redmond, Tadic, JWP and Boufal fight for the 2 wide spots whilst putting pressure on Barkley. Would be a huge upgrade on Davis.

Pope could be a good buy, but he's a keeper.

Gray has potential and could be a very good player but also similar flaws in his game to Redmond (decision making, basically). He would be a pointless signing for us unless Tadic is leaving. I also wouldn't want him blocking Sims when he is back from injury. I think Sims could be top class.

Would have no problem with selling Long and bringing in a more versatile option.

He was hideous on the wing, but not good enough in front of goal to play centre forward regularly.

Gabbiadini, Austin, Gallagher and a winger/10/false 9-type would keep us well stocked considering we're only going to play one up.

And we still have the "new Henry" up our sleeves if things get desperate...

I would have thought that the "pressing from the front" style would suit Long more than Austin.

I've not seen enough of Wimmer to make a judgement on him, but lets be honest, it's no shame being behind Toby and Vertonghen (similar to Lemina in that sense). £20m does seem very excessive given They signed him for about £5m a season or two ago and he's done little to nothing since though it must be said.

If I was in Les' / the Ross' shoes, I'd be looking around Europe for a CB and trying to avoid any current PL players. Much more value for money in europe.

£20m is very high, but WTF did Berahino do to be worth £15m with 12 months left?!

This seems more likely..

"..The Southampton's interest was "not really concrete". The goal is clear: "I want to stay in the Premier League , there are other possibilities."

Tottenham, who originally wanted to earn 23 million euros with Wimmer, is now supposed to have reduced the dismissed sum total to 15 million euros."

I would pay €15M of the club's money for him, sure. Let's do the deal quickly, without fuss or hesitation.

I think the fee and wages would be more of a problem than him being English.

I think we are one wide player down if we want to play 4-2-3-1 this season.

Only really have Redmond, Tadic and Boufal. If one of those is unavailable then there isn't really a good bench option.

Could use an option with real pace in that position I think.

Sims/Mcqueen would get crowed out imo if we signed another winger.

I would seriously hope this guy isn't van d-ick replacement. Nowhere near good enough.

It will cost us £70m to buy someone as good as Double VD. in the same way as it would have cost us £35m to buy someone as good as Mané.

So what's your point? That we should settle for second rate? That we shouldn't bother trying to find the next van d-ick? That we should just be happy buying some gash not even better than what we have?

I'd agree with him tbf towards the end of the season he was playing very well there hence the full England call up (he got on the pitch over Barkley who people are advocating paying decent money for) last season was his best so far imo and every season he has always got better . That's not to say this isn't a big season for him he needs to make another step up and be consistent , If he can maybe we'll finally put the "Jwp is he any good" debate to rest ! (And then expect a bid from the dippers)

Jwp can at best hope to be a mediocre foitballer at the peak of his abilities. There is a reason why he is still here through all the "clearance sales" we have had each summer. It is because no one wants to buy him.

Bar a dead ball whip, the guy is an excruciatingly poor footballer to watch at this standard.
