Goals Last Season

Things I concluded apart from that we scored some nice goals:

1. Mane is so much more than just a winger, he has a goalscoring instinct and we really should bring in a player with his type of movement in the final third. Its unfair to expect Redmond to score 10+ goals because he never has and that isn't his game.

2. Austin and Rodriguez can in theory replace some of the Mane and Pelle goals, but it is a risk as they both appeared so infrequently in the video due to injury.

3. An inform and happy Tadic makes so much difference to our attacking play. When he plays well usually the team does and his chance creation stats are not excellent for no reason.

4. There is a big role in our team for a central midfield player to score more goals.

5. Long scores in flurries rather than consistently over a season. Presumably why last year was his first PL season with more than 8 goals.

Makes you realise how involved Mane was. We have a huge amount to replace in attack.

Exactly. You can't really replace him with one player as he was a multi-functional forward.

Redmond is a start - It needs another offensive player as well who can play in-behind the striker, IMO.

We are reallly going to miss mane.

Is this notion of talking about 'replacing goals' the latest fad in football.

Football is simple, if we play well we will score goals, if we play badly we will score less goals.

Asking if JRod and Austin can 'replace' Mane and Pelle's goals is simply shorthand for asking if the team will play as well (and thus score as many goals) after the switch in personnel. See?

Did Aston Villa play really all well last season but just couldn't score, then?

No but they played just as **** the season before except they had Benteke to pull them out of it every week. His goals 100% kept them up.

Teams can play well and not score? How many teams were "too good to go down" but still did go down? I think you are over simplifying the game somewhat..goal scorers are worth their weight in gold. No one can say aguero makes no difference to city? Or that without Vardys goals LCFC would have still been champions?

The previous season Benteke scored 13 goals, the team managed a total of 31. Last season they replaced CBs goals with Ayew and Gestesde who between them scored 11, the team scored 27 goals and went down with 22 points adrift. I don't think four extra goals would have made 22 points. Last season they let 76 goals against 57 the season before, now I reckon those 19 goals had more to do with why they went down. Its all on google.

But Vardy was there the season before and didn't score the goals because the team wasn't as good and they didn't play as well.

This is my point talking about players in terms of the amount of goals they score is missing the point. We could replace Mane with another 11 goal a season player and it could work or we might score less goals, or we could not replace him and three current players could chip in with an extra four goals each or they might not. Chelsea bought goals when the bought Torres, Leicester fans were probably worried about Vardy the season before when he was 20 goals light of last season and there are probably loads of examples. Football is about teams and getting the best players that fit the formation and style of football.
