Ten Years of Saints Web... November 2016

The Saint

Recommended Posts

I've just noticed that next month will see the tenth anniversary of Saints Web.

It's still the only site I visit several times a day and most posters are knowledgable folk who have the best interests of the club at heart. Yes, some get a bit hot under the collar but overall it's the best place to come for news.

So, how are we going to celebrate?

Winning the Europa League would be a great way to kick off the summer, but I was thinking that a bit of a knees-up in a pub in November might be an idea...

Suggestions below....

Didn't the database get reset or something and all our profiles changed to November 2006 from whatever it was before?

I thought that was basically just the switchover from Saintsforever closing to Saints Web starting and we all moved over. It was a long time ago, so I've forgotten exactly what happened.

It is such a great shame that the "Paul Allen Takeover Thread" did not survive the archives.... It was Golden indeed all the way from Michael Nank, Help Me Rhonda, Barry the Briefcase, St David and the rest of the cast of thousands...

All those hours spent in the Summer of 2007 on that one thread waiting for the next gem !!

I remember that. Can't believe I've been lurking here that long. Happy anniversary saints web and all the mods who keep it going.

Will say, however, since the advent of social media it seems that a certain segment of society has evolved through anonymity to be cretinous on forums of which did not seem so prevalent in the early days.

Maybe I'm misremembering, am I?

You are misremembering, it was just as bad (maybe worse) on Saintsforever.

Those were the days

Big Sam and Scheve's phone thread was a classic

Javi threatening to keeeel Stevegrant

Amy gate

The original Ted Bates statue thread

The Paul Allen takeover

Master Bates porn PMs

I also remember a band of merry men invading other forums. One that sticks in my mind was a Facebook group called 'TSF completes my life'. TSF being the temple of Saint Francis in Manhattan. Those poor, unsuspecting, Evangelical New Yorkers didn't really know what to make of Southampton's finest discussing Keef and Monkey chicken petting zoos on their bible bashing page. I think half of those posters eventually got banned after posting obscene messages on a washing machine forum. Good memories indeed.

living 1000 miles away may seem a disadvantage to some, but still " the best Saints source" ..aside from other friends on the site.

As a poster who remembers when the Internet started, circa 1994 I recall joining the Saintslist on yahoo groups via our Uni Unix computers.

I then remember discovering the first forum SaintsForever and signing up. Some golden threads as has already been mentioned.

I then remember the Big Bang and having to create an account for this forum.

My post count is extremely low by some standards but I've still found myself visiting this site almost daily.

Ridiculous way to spend your life if you think about it too long.

I was on Saintslist too and used to spend far to much time on there and far too little masterminding sales strategies for The Guardian. Probably why they made me redundant. It would be quite scary to see how much time has been spent chuntering away on internet forums over the years. Someone told me Saintslist is still going?

Something like that. There have been quite a few re-generations. I think I started contributing in 2001

When was it Dave used to leave his Uni Radio on at the weekend connected to the net?

I never post much but still always read.

Cheers

Saintslist is still in existence and like others I was on it in the mid-90s and then Keith's site and now this.

Whilst I find this site, in the main, sh_it and populated by low brow morons, this part of the forum is still a good source of Saints information.

For those wondering where Bear is he now posts on Pap's forum (don't bother, it's beyond cr_ap) having, like many, got bored with the racist right wing bigots that can be found on here in their droves.

Yep. He was a class poster. Surely he wasn't banned ?

As I've only been reading here for a couple of years, I may be wrong - but when all the Jack Schitt stuff was going on, I saw someone called 'Bearsy' on the other forum, and he seemed quite amusing. In fact some people on here were referring to him at the time. If that's who you mean, looks like he is just another defector to add to the list!

Yeah, pretty much, I think.

When Keith decided to close Saints Forever, a few of us basically had a couple of days to come up with an alternative, so The Saints Forum was born - everyone had to re-register for that one. TSF then became SaintsWeb in 2008.

So technically SaintsWeb is only 8 years old, but this incarnation of the forum has been running for a decade.

Why did we all have to reregister in 2006? I can't remember now.

I find it more scary that I've been using incarnations of this forum for 18 years and not forgetting joining Saintslist in 1994 or so??

We had The Saints Forum between Saintsforever and Saintsweb. I'm still pretty sure after it became Saintsweb the database went bang. Would need Stevie G or Baj to confirm though.

Edit: It appears Steve has answered the question above already.

Amygate hahaha, good old Saintsforever. Almost as funny was Javi threatening to kill Steve Grant!!

I think you'll find that Javi was actually threatening to kill Mav, who happened to be a police officer...

I KEEEEELLLL YOU MABBBEREEKKK still occasionally gets a mention in our social circles.

Glad Steve has remembered to mention TSF, the interim bastard child of S4E and "T"SW.

Also glad that when I decided to begin the long path to moving (back) to Southampton after not knowing anyone in Bucharest in 2003, SaintsForever was there for me. There have been highs (stuffing Pompey Online twice, the overhead kick at Dean Court) and lows (living with the ex after the housing market collapsed), but most of all, there's always been somewhere for me to post a load of guff about kits, the Premier League Handbook and UEFA coefficients. Fortunately I gave up using it as a dating site after the first attempt. :o

Wasn't it Saint Lee or something like that involved with that forum, and wasn't he involved in some forum scandal?

Saintlee was an inside man on the Paul Allen (or some other unspecified billionaire) thing. Via PM he invited me to meet the "representatives" of the takeover once. I think he was genuine but got proper taken in.

Ah yes that rings a bell, shame as he was a nice guy and was very passionate about saints.
