Thought I would start a new thread for 2017 season

Craig White confirmed as First Team Coach. I am disappointed really as I wanted a clean sweep with someonefrom outside the club to give a new direction and new ideas. However happy to give him my support.

Fidel Edwards has confirmed he will be returning for the 2017 season

fidel.edwardsIt's about to go down!!!....Look who's back @hampshirecricket ... It's been a tough year for me but after my horrendous injury #hampshire kept faith in me and even tho I'm not 100% I can safely say I will be ready for 2017 and even better than ever... Big thanks to all my friends, family and most of all fans that help me back along the road to recovery "RESPECT"????????✌?️????..... #ageasbowl @hampshirecricket I'm coming back home??

No news on new signings. Supposed to be two with one being a high profile bowler

Good to see we have tied down Dawson, Alsop and McManus to longer contracts

I think we were decimated by injuries last year and you will see a different side this year. We have an exciting young side that will be going in the right direction.

Strong rumour continues that Hampshire have secured a couple of good signings, but no names will be released until next spring. This fits in with what Rod Bransgrove told me at the end of the season. We will just have to wait.

Or maybe something at 8am tomorrow!! Hampshire CCC teasing on twitter

George Bailey on 2 year deal as overseas.

Rumoured since the end of season dinner but I am not overly inspired as our overseas but let's see. Other one is said to be a top class bowler but clearly he will not be overseas! This one may take time to be announced.

Would say that's what we've been missing for a while now - Hopefully with this possible new man and both Topley and Edwards fully fit we should have a reasonable side again this year.

Did I hear correct that Vince is out of contract this season, if so, any news on if he is likely to extend?

I know it wont happen but I would love KP back. Even if it's just for T20.

Back?? Was he ever here? I thought we had to send him a map how to get to Rosebowl.

Bailey is ok but not exciting enough for me to turn us around.

Topley will help but need a strike bowler and quality batsman still.

I think he's got another year or two, but he has a relegation release clause in his contract so could have left had Durham not been royally stitched up.

George Bailey's a solid recruit as overseas player, plays all formats, won the championship with Middlesex this year. Presumably Fidel Edwards is in as a Kolpak. Hopefully we don't end up with another situation like earlier this year where 8 of our 11 are 33+...

Was towards the back end of the season that I heard it was likely for him to be off - that would explain.

Agree about Bailey can't think of many with more experience than him who you could have all season for all formats.

Surely they have to offer Ervine a contract? A middle order of Vince, Bailey, Dawson and Ervine might actually be quite solid.

Interesting the overseas is a batsman given our bowling woes next year. I hope you're right Weston and we have a bowler lined up.

We are still pretty light in terms of t20 specialists as well. Hopefully we get a top order batsman on a t20 contract

Was towards the back end of the season that I heard it was likely for him to be off - that would explain.

There were rumours linking Vince to Essex towards the end of the season in a couple of papers. Vince denied it on Twitter and Wheater ended up joining them so wonder if it was a case of crossed wires from some journalists!

Very odd that nothing has been announced on Adams or Ervine. Quick Google suggests that Weston is correct that their contracts expire this year. I'd give Adams another year and Ervine another two or three. Adams actually did okay last season despite no tons and you don't want to lose too many experienced openers at once with Carberry unlikely to play again. I thought Smith might have been out of contract this year, he struggled so you would think he may drop out of the regular side to more of a cover player.

The batting actually looks okay on paper (flatters to deceive a bit) but the bowling still very weak and we will struggle again. Another problem is how bad most of our bowlers are with the bat! Our tail gets blown away very easily and Edwards, Crane, Wheal and Topley are all number 11s. You shouldn't pick your bowlers based on batting ability but numbers 8 and 9 being able to contribute something makes a big difference. How often do sides do that to Hampshire?

I know it is difficult getting a good overseas player because if he is going to bring star quality to the side he needs to be a top international. However, whilst Bailey is a recognised and proven batting talent I wonder where he will fit in to provide balance.

We have likely lost Carberry for next season whilst he continues to battle his illness. I am not sure the position with Adams but if he retires it leaves us short in the opening batting position with only Alsop recognised in that position.

Let us assume Vince will need time to work on his errors to get back to Test cricket. With him in the side we may have batsmen Adams, Alsop, Smith, Vince, Bailey, allrounders Dawson & Ervine, the latter being more just a batsman now, McManus and then 3 bowling positions. A definite unbalance.

Bailey will likely be away for ICC Trophy in June (and part of May for build-up). Does Smith drop out when Bailey is playing? It seems likely. We need bowlers at 8,9,10,11 Berg may take 8 unless our promised top class bowler (from Rod Bransgroves mouth before the end of season) is an allrounder. He will not be an overseas but maybe a Kolpak? Cannot think of any English qualifying bowlers available! We need to reserve a place for Crane so does that leaves Edwards Wheal Topley and promised new signing vying for 3 places? Not looking good for Crane for part of the season as I am sure we will go for 4 seamers early on to give some balance.

Going to be an interesting season….again.

If I remember rightly, it was widely reported in the press towards the end of the season that there was either a clause or an agreement that if we went down, he'd be able to leave unimpeded.

Dawson might not be the most naturally gifted of players but he's a great all-round competitor.

Really hope he does well over the next few days; although, of course, the downside of that might be that Hampshire get to see less of him over the coming years. Mind you, I suppose he's unlikely to become England's main spinner during our English summer so perhaps that won't be the case.

There's a story on Cricinfo that we're trying to register Kyle Abbott on a long term kolpak deal, ending his international career. Would be a good signing but what a damning state of affairs for South African cricket

Same story also linking us with Rilee Roussouw, although not sure if as a kolpak or as t20 overseas

That would fit in with what Rod Bransgrove said to me at the end of last season.....top class bowler but not likely to be announced yet as lot of issues involved.

Abbott has quit SA and is Hampshire bound for what is expected to be a 3 year deal. Massive signing.

Abbott has signed for 4 years - which is quite a coup - and Rilee Rossouw for 3 years, both on Kolpak deals.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/38517892

Rossouw is an ODI player for SA - Looks like he might play across all formats given he was in several SA A squads but never quite broke into the Test team. Got Player of the series in the autumn ODI series V Aus. Can open but would he open in 4 day cricket given we have vacancies there?

More here: http://www.espncricinfo.com/southafrica/content/player/318845.html

SA coach not happy though!: http://www.espncricinfo.com/southafrica/content/story/1075704.html

Well done Hampshire - although feel some sympathy for SA. Batting and squad looking much healthier for next year and we seem to have learned from our escape this time. Hope Saints can get the changes they need to make done quickly and some equally exciting signings to cheer up the main board a bit!

I'm a massive Hampshire fan..but I think these two blokes will live to regret this..it's not quite Sean Ervine turning his back on Zimbabwe. I actually feel a bit sad for the two of them...both are fantastic players, and both still had gig international careers ahead of them..I think they're nuts.

Not giving a toss about South African international cricket myself, I'm pleased that we've signed some good players.

Perhaps the S.A test scene isn't up to much.

Fair enough. South Africa have got a pretty exciting team at the moment. I'm a cricket/Hampshire nut , but as I said this really saddens me. I think it's a backwards step for Hampshire & Test cricket. I'd love to see Hampshire develop youth, but next year it's going to be a collection of good/mediocre Kolpack players and some promising youngsters. It's all personal opinion, I get that, but it doesn't sit well with me. Ironically my favourite Hampshire Team was the 85 squad with the Smith Brothers, Greenidge and Marshall. But those were guys we discovered as unknowns at a young age. I remember Marshall refusing to come out and get his Nat West man of the match award in a Semi-Final we had lost as he was too upset. He was Hampshire through and through. I don't think i'll see that kind of thing again.

Yeah..thats a good one. I get that essentially i'm saying, 'I'm gutted Hampshire have signed two fantastic players who actually may win us the championship' so I realise that I'm standing alone on this one! I guess I just love cricket..and to me Test cricket is dying on it's arse, and it sets a worrying trend. I would potentially put Abbot as one of the top 10 bowlers in test cricket in English conditions, he's been fantastic recently. I'd have loved to see him come over here with South Africa for a five match series. But I totally understand why i'm alone this opinion.

Surely you battle your way back into the team..and with their current bowling injuries, I reckon he was set for a good run. I guess you may question someones motivation who turns his back on a Test career to play in front of two men and a dog each week. And someone who just gives up a test career at 29.

One of the problems with South Africa Cricket has been their Quota system which restricts the number of "white" players that can be in SA Test, IOD & T20.

Abbott was dropped from the World Cup Semi last year despite him having the best bowling figures because of this system. He has got back in but only because of Steyn and Morkel injuries. Also the Rand is dropping in value against the £ & $ so SA Contract is losing its value.

Hampshire offered him a 4 year contract believed to be £100,000 per season with additional free medical cover. As he is 29 that will about see out his career as a top bowler. SA could not offer him that stability.

Same applies to Rossouw.

It is not all about overseas players though. We have also signed Asher Harta promising English All rounder who will be 20 in March. He is in the main squad and Durham have been quoted in Cricinfo "The club also lost one of their brightest young talents - Asher Hart - to Hampshire at the end of last season. "They offered him a lot more money," Lewis admitted phlegmatically. "What can you do? We didn't want to lose him at all, but you can't blame him."

I am quite positive for the season. We have strengthened the batting and bowling and great competition for places. I will not be surprised if Hamshire are not one of the favourites for 2017 Championship.

Weston. Any news on Carbs for next season?

I was delighted to see him on Channel 5's coverage of The Big Bash, last weekend. Nothing was said about his illness and I wondered if he had been asked about it in an earlier show?

This is my last post under the SaintsWeb quota system!! He has told the Hampshire coaches he wants to come back for the up and coming season. Do not know how his cancer is now but he looks fit and well. If his strength returns there is no reason why he cannot come back. He is still under contract.

Will be a fantastic competition for places.

Batsmen - Carberry, Adams, Alsop, Weatherley, Rossouw, Vince, Bailey, Smith, McManus

All Rounders - Ervine, Dawson, Berg, Hart

Bowling - Abbott, Edwards, Crane, Topley, Wheal, Taylor, Wood, Stevenson.

Good mix of experience and youth in each category.

And I will continue to have a great view from the Robin Smith Balcony and access to Players, Coaches and Directors for all domestic games. What is not to like about the 2017 season :)

Good to hear regarding Carberry, and much better options for the upcoming year.

Who is the backup keeper if McManus breaks a finger?

they have Ed Ellis Oxford MCCU and Hants 2nd XI but look a little light in that department.

On a different note The Times today reports that Michael Carberry has returned from his media work abroad and is due to meet up with the other home-based Hampshire players this week to resume training – getting fit for the new season.

Have signed Calvin Dickinson (also Oxford MCCU) on a scholarship as well I think.
