Martin Caceres Signs - Official

Wait for it.

"Martin is player we've tracked for a long time, he was someone we looked it before Claude was here. He is a quality international player and we had the opportunity to sign him. Players of this quality don't often become available so we've had to work incredibly hard to bring him to the club. With martin on board with have centre back options as good as anyone in the premier league and he is the a tremendous addition to the quality we already have at the club"

Indeed. The only thing that the Black box told Reed was "Sign someone or we're f&*8ed"

Have we ever "panic" signed a player in the Premier League since promotion? Elia and Djuricic felt a bit like that. There were plenty in the Championship relegation season!

As for Caceres? Worth the risk. It might knock Stephen's confidence but it's a risk worth taking. Caceres has pedigree. Make it so Reed.

There are thousands of center backs out of contract and available. If we are serious in retaining of Premier League status and finishing in a decent position, Reed just has to get his finger out and work out a good deal and get someone.

I fear many of the older players will be wanting a longer contract

Let us not forget Kevin Davies was a free agent when Sam Allardyce signed him. Got 10 good years service from him. If the Black Box really is functioning surely we have a pick of names to go for

Stephens confidence will take a greater battering if he's torn apart week after week in the league.

Martín Cáceres returned to England. The possibility now is to play at Southampton.

@Martin Charquero Uruguay

Apologies didn't see post above if it's worth anything Charquero is followed on Twitter by Darren Lewis football journo.

Some pretty famous names on those lists at not very old ages - Must be weird being a footballer on thousands a week one minute, and then sat at home the next. Royston Drenthe stands out particularly, i'm sure he was very highly rated at one point but 29 and without a club now.

He's been linked to 3 PL teams so far. It is impossible for two of them to sign him. If he needs a few weeks to get his fitness up, I believe that will only see him missing one PL game since the week following Sunderland away is the FA Cup, and the next is Wembley. Make it happen Les.

It will be in the Mirror shortly then. Either Lewis or a Crooky special as he monitors this site and the #SaintsFC hastag.

Playing with and getting to learn from an international who has played for Juventus and Barcelona will only help Stephens. Personally thought he did well on saturday. Could have prevented the first goal but wasnt helped much by the midfield in front of him. Brought the ball out of defence on a number of occasions and looked composed. In a year or two he can be a very important player for us

Nope, merely posing a question. The name is already out there. Surely though, it is worth any risk given our current situation, no?

Yes, worth the risk in my opinion. We have 14 league games left. He has top class pedigree but awful track record for injuries.

If we can keep him fit for 8/9 leagues and win 4 of them we'll be safe. So do it and wrap him in cotton wool the minute he arrives.

From Jorge Baravalle' date=' apparently a journo on Fox Sports, on Twitter: "Attention. The Uruguayan Martín Cáceres, who did not fix his contract with Milan, will play in Southampton."[/quote']

Yes please! I really hope so!

In terms of pedigree, if this was a precursor to Fonte leaving I think everyone would be pretty pleased. It's just that the timing makes it all seem a little desperate!

Also, Essien is a good shout if he's still got the legs. He's exactly the sort of midfielder we need.
