General election? June 8th?

It hasn't proven to be her undoing though. Weakly hiding away all campaign, coming out with ridiculous, unpopular policies such as fox hunting and "dementia tax", not focusing on the tories's positives has been her undoing.

Nope, I've got nothing either...

Interesting that May has the highest priority of the vote for a Tory leader since Thatcher in 83. She's got a higher percentage than Cameron did when he got his majority last tine round.

There's a hell of a lot going on in this election!

True, but Labour have also got more votes than Cameron. It reflects the collapse of the minor parties in this election rather than popularity.

In effect, the UKIP got nigh on 4 million votes last time round I believe and this time I doubt that they even got a quarter of that. With the Lib Dems being virtually wiped out in 2015 and not anywhere near their prior vote this time either we're leaning back towards a 2 party system, apart from the Scot Nats that is.

This is called doing a Puel. Looks good on paper but says more about the paucity of the opposition than any innate actual success.

Given the EU didn't want us to leave in the first place, I'm trying to understand why they would block a U-turn to stay

They wouldn't. Revoking article 50 would only become a complicated legal process if the EU opposed it. I think.

We won't get a deal with the EU so it will be hard Brexit or nothing. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

How can Labour gain Kensington? Not knowing the area too well but would strike me to be nailed on Tory. Or is it Noel Gallagher and his mates?

Their MP backed Brexit, it's a Remain voting area.

Extraordinary result though. It's the country's wealthiest seat.

Not sure of the exact boundaries but as well as the obvious posh bits, there are also a few large estates in West Kensington and Ladbroke Grove who you would associate more labour voting with. Sure there is a bit of a Brexit-backlash as well, but not as much across the capital as I'd expected/hoped.

So we now have a junior partner in Government whose members believe that the Pope is the antichrist, that homosexuality is worse than child abuse, and that the world is 6000 years old. This is going to be a fun ride.
They put all that in their manifesto?

Mrs Strong and Stable's new partner is the woman who managed to lose £500m of public money in a botched energy scheme. Bearing in mind NI is only around 1.5 million people she could crank that up to around £20 billion when she gets her hands on the UK.

The remoaners who voted labour clearly didn't read page 28 of their manifesto. "Free movement will end when we leave the European Union" was what is written. The EU has stated free movement is a must if you want to stay members of the single market. With 80% of the country voting for parties that accept the end of free movement, unless The EU are lying, we'll be leaving the single market. There is a mandate. If that's not a "hard Brexit", & it's clearly not a "soft" Brexit, what is it a semi?

I don't think the election was much to do with Brexit either way. Most of the UKIP support feel its a done deal and went back to either Labour or Tory. Corbyn caught the public imagination, May didn't, rather than anything specifically Brexit related.

The picture is more mixed and complex. Jeremy Vine showed that where labour won seats from the tories with small tory majorities, many of those seats were split between leave and remain, so traditional left-right issues of distribution were v.important. But where labour won seats with previously large tory majorities, they were highly correlated with the remain vote (e.g. Enfield and Southgate). If Kensington goes labour, it will definitely be because the incumbent MP was a viagra-hard brexiteer, not because the richest constituency in the country was asking to be pounded by higher taxes.

I feel sorry for your missus today. You must be in a foul mood with how it turned and in addition your prophecies (the lefties on here....etc.) turning out to be, well not too prophetic.

Still take heart your beloved little Nigel will be back soon.

everyone except the DUP that is, they'll be pleased to get the kingmaker place that they thought they'd get last time.

Just looking through news clippings and watching the Sky News.

Why is corbyn acting like he won? bit weird

I'm amazed any of these Tory landslide predictors have the gall to still post on this thread. And the Blairites.

Are you missing the tears of the lefties you've been predicting for weeks? Where's all the Momentum lot smashing up the place?

He has won. He'll be leader for another couple of years, unlike May.

The prize used to be who would bring their party to the top table.

in what was the worst election campaign for decades (ever?), he finished a very distant 2nd with the number of seats won.

May probably wont last the year but even then, he will still be the opposition to who ever replaces her and remains a long way off being Prime Minister

Not at all, I'm a democratic. Unlike the remoaners I accept democratic results without throwing my toys out of my pram.

Anyway, I voted to stop Corbyn being PM, as he isn't , why would I be upset

Easy for you to say the Tory Party are cr*p after the event. Fact is, you were crowing about an easy Tory win right up to the end. Just admit you were wrong. Corbyn has stuck it right to all his detractors like it or not.

Because you won't be getting your 87 majority rock hardon Brexit. It'll be a nice flaccid Brexit with plenty of immigration back and forth.

Have you read the labour manifesto? It clearly states "free movement will end". That's all I've ever wanted, EU citizens not having an automatic right to live & work in the U.K. Levels of immigration will be set by the U.K. Parliament. If we don't like the level they'll be voted out.

People grow up!

Certainly wasn't just the 18-24 age group. 18-34 was 64% labour vote. Up to 55 was a 50/50 split.

The audacity of any Tory supporting a coalition with the DUP is quite extraordinary considering the stick Corbyn got.

Yeah but the next generation will grow up with the previous generation's debt round their neck, austerity, without free higher education, a decent chance to own a house and with their environment ****ed up.

And out of the EU against their wish.

Although he didn't win as such, he performed much better than expected even despite the opposition he faced from within his own party and the relentless smear campaign run by the media barons against him. So it's a moral victory for him because he has proved that there is a broad support base for his policies which can be built upon in the run up to the next general election.

Edit: this was supposed to be in response to Batman's earlier post but I neglected to do reply with quote.
