Balague said similar when we got Poch and remember it reassuring me when fuming about how we treated Adkins.

Huge optimism for what is going to be a wonderful joyous season even allow for the opening 1-1 against Swansea.

Hopefully Boufal gets a sharp kick up his backside, and if he doesn't live up to his potential we get shot whilst he still has some market value.

Well hopefully the new manager can use our players way more effectively and we can really see what they are capable of .

For Skyports Spanish expert Guillaume Balague's view on the Pellegrino appointment :

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/12087/10925394/guillem-balague-says-mauricio-pellegrino-perfect-fit-for-southampton

I'd also highly recommend Friday's 5 Live Football Daily Podcast as they've got Tim Vickery on running the rule over Pelligrino's time in management with Estudientes and Independiente in Argentina.

Tells a good story about the time Pelligrino got so animated giving out touchline instructions that he actually dislocated his shoulder.

Both Balague and Vickery give interesting insights into Pellegrini's character, style and how he did in both Spain and Argentina.

Well worth a listen.

No. But I have done some digging.

His assistant at Alavés was another Argentine called Carlos Compagnucci, who has worked with Pellegrino at his previous three clubs, so I'd imagine he'd be one of them.

And there was another called Xavier Tamarit, who also worked with him at Estudiantes, Independiente and Alavés.

He also worked with a Fitness Coach called Gabriel Macaya Fernández he's been with Pellegrino at every club he has managed.

Should we do well, you watch the football lovies on twitter bang on about his football periodisation beliefs.

Carlos compagnuci, Xavier Tamarit and Gabriel Macaya are rated as the best assistants in La Liga.

Tamarit has written a book on coaching.

Originally developed by Vitor Frade, at the University of Porto, Tactical Periodization is a methodology - popularized by coaches such as Jose Mourinho and Andre Villas Boas - that trains soccer players through a logical process that focuses on four moments of the game. These four moments are: Offensive Organisation, the Transition from Defence to Attack, Defensive Organisation, and the Transition from Attack to Defence. Through Tactical Periodization, the aim is to develop players to rapidly alter their on-field behaviours according to the tactical context of the match, and what actually unfolds in front of them. In turn, every training exercise focuses on at least one of the four moments, and always the coach's tactical game model of how he wants his team to play. In doing so, football players prepare and learn how best to conquer the often unpredictable matches that they encounter competitively. This book is the English language translation of the acclaimed book Periodizacion Tactica by world-renowned coach and sports science specialist Xavier Tamarit. *Important Note: What is Tactical Periodization is the translation of an academic book that examines Tactical Periodization's underlying philosophies, methodologies, and application. It covers areas such as systemic thinking, football as a complex phenomenon, and how the 'sum is greater than its parts'; it does not contain practical how-tos or drills. Candidly, it is not an 'easy' book to read, and requires a certain level of effort and concentration by the reader. However, for those who stick with it, the book provides a rewarding and high value resource for the modern football coach who wishes to understand exactly how Tactical Periodization developed, what it means for the sport, and how it can influence his or her coaching. Summary sections have been added to each original chapter to offer additional insight."

You don't think Craig David is impressive?

Personally I am quite hopeful on this appointment. TBH I had very little knowledge of him until mentioned on here in relation to coming to us. Was definitely not looking forward to another season of Puel, the football equivalent of 'health and safety', (designed to stop all things enjoyable).

But actually trying to get somewhere in a cup, trying to get into Europe again, and trying to score goals will be a definite plus.

Maybe you can share all the managers that applied for the job then so we can see how impressive the list was?

I am optimistic with this one, I am hoping the board put there foot down with VVD and make him stay, MP is supposed to get the best out of his defenders so if he can improve BBC then next summer his value will only improve.

Ralph has already stated we do not need to sell to buy this summer so let's hope we splash some cash and buy some quality.

Either way I would be happy with attacking football and top 12 than Puel tactics and 8th all day long

A very strange time in the UK to be downplaying Heath and Safety?

Still, back to the football. Sounds like a very good appointment having read many of the articles. Let's get behind him and the club.

One thing that did make me raise an eyebrow was this mention of long term project. Having moaned when the two previous managers left before the end of their contracts it's a bit rich to keep banging on about long term project when we have shown we are quite prepared to fire a manager after one season.

So I think a more realistic ambition is to appoint a good manager, enjoy a couple of strong seasons and then be prepared when he leaves to find another one. Occasionally, like Puel, it won't work out but we need to buy in as fans to this approach and not moan like f!ck when a player or manager moves on.

Will we as fans be capable of taking this lesson on board?

Any news on his coaching team?Would welcome Sammy Lee back. Worked with him at Liverpool.

No news yet, but there are three guys with whom he has worked at many of his clubs before, so it seems likely that they'll come with him.

Unless they don't fancy the English weather.

Can see another Koeman situation. 3 year contract and he'll be gone after two

If he's poached then he'll have to go a good job. This is why I have no objections to us being used as a stepping stone club by players or managers.

This is my view too, and I'm delighted that this year the club have made what seems a good appointment and with time to prepare for the season ahead, before the squad returns.

Welcome Mauricio.

All sounds good. But its just words - It's only words and words are all I have to take your heart away.

Read back at similar articles when Puel joined last summer and i was expecting fast attacking football and high press, we got full opposite.

Thanks for the research and insight about the coaches, interesting read and shows the benefit of the Forum (as opposed to mongboard willie waving antics of some...).

This article also contains reference to his coaching staff at Alaves.

Pellegrino has two assistant coaches, Carlos Campagnucci and Xavi Tamarit, author of a book on the theory of periodisation fathered by Vítor Frade and followed by José Mourinho, among others. His fitness coach, David Rodríguez, and the goalkeeper coach, Javier López Vallejo, complete the team who have had a huge impact in Vitoria.

The GK coach is a new name to those Pamplemousse gave us. So will be interesting to see what this means for Dave Watson. Forster too.

I can't say I was too keen on Pellegrino when I first heard about him, but the more I hear and read about him the more he is growing on me. Most certainly he should be supported by all and given time to show what he can do. I admit that I never liked Pochettino, but do admit he was a great manager for us and has gone on to be even better.

My dislike for him (MoPo) was purely about the way he stabbed Adkins in the back (in that he agreed to take the job on during the summer but not until he was ready, i.e. waited for Adkins to steady the ship and get a few decent results before giving Cortese the nod, and Nige the knife). MoPo the went on to display his great moral character by walking on us.....

Hopefully this Mauricio is a nicer and better person than his compatriot and goes on to become an even better manager. I also hope that that the board give him far better backing than they gave Puel. I honestly believe Puel did as good a job as any manager could have last season (in relation to reaching a cup final and final position in the league, we should have done better in Europe). Last summer he was let down by us not signing a striker and by our major signing being someone we knew wouldn't be available for half the season. Then it took until the last day of January to finally bring a striker in, despite Austin having been out with a long term injury since mid-December. And as for the CB fiasco........

Les has said the squad only needs 'fine tuning'. I will agree with that providing we don't lose any of our better players (most notably any of our first choice defenders). If they all stay (VvD, Cedric and Bertrand) we only really need to bring in a lesser CB as I would be happy with either Maya or Stephens partnering VvD. I believe we also need another strong holding DM and and AM who will get goals. That, to me, is fine tuning. However, if we let any of our 'stars' go we will need more of a rebuild.

Anyway, back on topic, good luck and welcome Mauricio. I look forward to seeing how you can get the playing (after the usual 1-1 draw in the first game of the season ;) ) .

Vallejo was already at Alavés, I'm not sure Pellegrino has worked with the same GK coach at every club. Perhaps though this guy is so good that MP will want to bring him in too.

Someone on here mentioned Sammy Lee and the prospect of his return.

My recollection is of a rumour that he left after a fall out with other coaches, either Dave Watson, or one of the Koemans. It may only have been a rumble on here without any foundation to it. So I suppose the prospect of his return might be governed by who he fell out with, and the manner of it, especially if Les Reed was caught up in the crossfire of it. And of course how many back up team MP is allowed to bring in. I think RK had three including Lee, and Puel had a team of two, (both excluding GK coach).

Even on a good news day some can't see past their gloom. Give it up mate it's not making you happy,

You really are a true bell end - couple of times now you have tried to goad me, but I have a life. Read more carefully, and if you don't like it - surprise surprise, it's a FORUM, where people express their views (not just yours). Now then dearie, take a chill pill and get your afternoon rest.

I liked it when you took the moral high ground and said when we finished seventh that anyone accepting mid-table as being good for a club like Southampton had been "brainwashed" by Les Reed.

Later you were back on this forum, after we'd finished eighth telling people that mid-table was good for a club like Southampton. Laughable.

Im hopeful , we are hearing mostly the right things although Reeds comments of ' small tweaks ' are concerning . Possibly another season of not really investing in the squad .

Will see what happens for us in the transfer window . Not bothered if VVD leaves as long as all the funds are invested in quality replacements .

Hope we allow him to bring in his own team. To an extend Puel was hampered by that.

Interesting that when Koeman left, Alek Gross our head of sports science took on the fitness coach role from Jan Kluitenberg.

Be interesting to see if Gabriel Macaya is part of the new team or if Gross retains that role.

Assume Watson will stay again.

This is a great article:

"taking the game to our opponents by playing a high-intensity game." is the most telling part of the generally standard statement from Reed for me. It was inevitable we would be after a manager who at least claimed (only time will tell) to want to play attacking football, but despite our success under Koeman it's now clear that we were looking for a manager who incorporates pressing into the gameplan.

It's was time to make a change

Just relax, take it easy

You're still old, that's your fault

There's so much you have to know

Support the coach, settle down

If you want you can renew your season ticket

Look at me, I am young, but I'm happy (because Puel has gone)
