Embarrassing being a Saints fan

For the first time I feel so embarrassed to be a Saints fan. Average players is bad enough but what I can’t accept is a lack of desire. We didn’t look up for it again. We lost almost every 50/50. No energy, no determination and no desire. We’ll sleepwalk our way out of this league. Les Reed mentioned high energy, pressing, attacking football. The managers he’s appointing don’t seem to know the brief. Poor recruitment, poor effort and a total shambles.

I can’t see any progress with his manager at all. I can take a poor result, if it’s clear there’s some philosophy but there isn’t.

I'm puzzled how any of that makes you be embarrassed to be a fan of the club. How is it personally embarrassing for you?

I genuinely feel this board should be closed for a few hours after a poor performance for the sake of some fans sanity.

I really do worry about some of you.

Keep calm. Call it an early night. Give the Ukrainian green the swerve and get fit for work tomorrow morning.

Not been watching for too many years then?

It’s the first time I’ve watched Saints play in another town and had to hear neutrals slating our performance and rightly so. It was embarrassing when we looked so awful to have smirking glances in my direction. That’s why it was embarrassing to me. That was a personal laugh at my expense.

As for going and supporting someone else, grow up. As if it’s that easy to do that. I’ve been a Saints fan all my life and had a season ticket for the majority of my adult life. I don’t jump to rash conclusions and often look for the positives. I don’t over post on here like some people. Just because I say something negative doesn’t mean I don’t have a valid point.

How can you call yourself saints-til-i-die and then be embarrassed about a performance?? Not exactly living up to your name. I'd hate to be around you when we truly have a cr*p team.

Must be gutting for Brighton fans having dropped two points at home to such a bunch of useless non-triers !

A quick look at the league table may have stopped you making an arse of yourself but hey,ho, if that’s how you see it then good luck to you !

Personally I prefer to be realistic and accept an away point as being ok, not great but could have been worse !

We march on....

QUOTE by Lighthouse - My parents once asked me for a link to the jacket I wanted for Christmas and I accidentally sent them a link to the girl on girl pornography I had recently been watching.

Nothing like as dangerous / embarrassing as it would have been if you had sent that link to your wife :lol:

Which girl was wearing your chosen jacket ?

The one on top ???

To be fair if you’re talking embarrassing why not talk about our away support today? Utterly f*cking silent for most of the game, as it has been for many away games recently.

Does my head in so many people that travel but stand in silence.

I'm embarrassed whenever the cameraman does a close up of our fans in the stands, it could easily be mistaken for a mental hospitals annual day trip.

Wish this had a like button right now. We’ve attracted a proper geeky support in recent years. I guess that’s being in the top flight, but f*ck me does the dungeons and dragons types annoy me

Not embarrased.Just bored over watching a one dimensional team pass sideways. Football is afterall entertainment and despite having a season ticket I am finding it hard to get enthuisiastic watching this risk free unemotional display of overpaid divas underperform each week. I am not alone

Tbf it actually sounded very good for most of the first half from my viewing. Not much after that though, I do agree.

Trust me I was there, it was terrible for a lot of the game.

I have no idea what happened when we got back to the premier but our away support now seems to include a lot more people standing in silence, a lot more middle class couples and children, and just less passion and aggression.

Maybe I’m old and chasing something that no longer exists, but the whole thing is less enjoyable now. I’d rather be in the pub with my mates than be in the ground with a bunch of day trippers.

What happened to the guy who wore the face paint and wig? The cameras showed him every game but haven't seen him this season.

I had a friend at school who was a dungeons and dragons type and I was amazed to learn that he now goes to pretty much every game. Not once did he show one iota of interest in football.

A symptom of our premier league status I suppose. Certainly disappointing, but doesn't seem to be all that rare in the PL now, a club losing many of its vocal supporters.

I swear to god that half of you would've committed suicide had you support us in the 90's.

If you are so embarrassed then feel free to support another club.

Imagine if we’d had a forum like this during the 20 games without a win streak in the 88-89 season.

This is where the glory hunter mentality comes in unfortunately. Quite a few saddos think that if they wear a top 4 team's replica shirt they are actually automatically more successful in life.

makes me sad for all those Arsenal fans who just last year suddenly became much less successful.

If you wear a replica shirt over the age of 14 there is a very good chance you are a fat, pathetic dribbling imbiclie whose greatest achievement is getting out of bed each day.

Funny that. I think the same about a large proportion of those that post a load of twaddle on this site :)

Just to play Devil's Advocate, why does it matter what type of person you are if you are a good supporter? Maybe your friend discovered what a great thing football was later in life, and now goes to every game and sings & shouts from the first minute to the last. What about the guy who missed the first 10 minutes of the second half because he was at the bar? Or do you get a free pass on that because Beer is on the list of acceptable hobbies of proper football fans?

It probably IS true that the influx of tourists, and increase in 'middle class' families detracts from the atmosphere, but I think the question should be 'why?', and why are even the more traditional pockets of noise (i.e. the Northam) struggling to find their voice?

I was sat in an admittely quiet section of the Itchen for the Newcastle game, but at 2-1 down and having chances, the atmosphere was simmering a little. The Northam started OWTS, it wasn't great but at least there was something. Thought I'd join in - on my own at first, but you can't complain about the lack of singing if you're not prepared to do it yourself - I did the entire song at the top of my lungs and couldn't believe that I didn't hear a single person in the block join in. Wasn't sure if I felt more embarrassment for myself or for everybody else  I get that if we are playing terribly and/or getting thrashed, people are too depressed, but this felt like a moment in the game where we were on the front foot and the support of the crowd would help. So why are so many people so reluctant to get involved?

The Brighton tickets were snapped up by STs, the core of our support..............

if they don't sing at St.Mary's don't expect different behaviour when they travel away

I wear one and I can assure you that I'm not fat or a dribbling imbecile (proof I can spell imbecile). Whether at on I am pathetic is an opinion.

Yep, your spelling is spot on. Your grammar on the other hand leaves a bit to be desired, I would suggest. ;)

Dear Mr Turkish.

My replica shirt is now 15 years old.

Whilst I accept that you feel I should have purchased another one since then, I have grown quite fond of it and the team are now wearing the same design. So I guess I feel quite trendy.

Sorry.

LBA.

There is nothing particularly embarrassing about being a Saints' fan. We are, a bit like Birmingham, a club with a long history of underachievement, whose fans have fairly low expectations but continue to turn up regardless. Any player who reads this forum would see that a sizeable percentage of our fans aren't particularly bothered whether we win, lose or draw or even what division we are in, as we should 'know our place', (which is a bit lower than fans of other clubs would expect from a club with a fanbase as big as ours). We won our only major trophy more than forty years ago and understandably any ambitious player who wants to win trophies leaves us at the earliest opportunity, so it's hardly surprising the passion seems to have gone both on and off the pitch. A little bit of overdue success, like winning another cup final, would bring the passion and belief we had in the late 70s and early 80s flooding back. Fans of most other clubs tend to see us as being a fairly loyal lot under the circumstances.
