"Saints can't score goals this season"

After banging in 4 yesterday, there are now 8 teams in the league that have scored fewer than Saints have (13 goals from 13 games) - whilst 9 teams have scored more.

Brighton/Everton have scored the same number.... whilst Huddersfield, Swansea and palace are still in single figures.

Surprising - given all the recent "Saints can't score goals" hype - and makes you realise quite a few teams are struggling for goals this season!!

We just scored 4, of course we're higher up now then a week ago!

The key thing is the ability to consistently score goals

Exactly. Lets not forget that 7 of those goals came in just two games, suggesting that the opposition we played in those two were particularly poor. 6 goals in the remaining 11 games is incredibly poor. Yesterday was a big improvement but we will find out soon if it was just an anomaly. I hope not.

We've failed to score in 7 games this season (including Wolves), just because we scored 4 yesterday does not mean yet that we can suddenly score goals for fun. Things went well yesterday against a diabolical side, lets wait and see if we have turned a corner or whether this was a bit of an aberration. Incidentally if we had continued going for it one more goal yesterday would have taken us above Brighton in the League.

4 goals in open play this season before yesterday which is diabolical and hardly any back end of last season after the Watford 4-3 win. We had been shocking and probably the worst in front of goal before yesterday for a long time.

This is not true though .... before the Everton game, we had scored 3 goals scored from open play (+ 3 penalties) at home. Away from home we have scored 3 times - all from open play. Total was 9. Now 13

But the point I was trying to make wasn't that we were suddenly amazing in front of goal...............purely that there are quite a few teams with the same problem this season.

Good forwards are a lot harder to find these days I think. People use to talk about having a 20+ goals a season striker in your team now anyone that good in the PL is out of most clubs budgets so unless you get lucky, like spurs, and get one come up through the ranks you are left getting the best you can in your budget to net 10-12 a season.

It's probably still not dawned on Pellegrino, he's far too clever. Some kids are naturals, no matter who they play for put them in the box with the ball and they invariably score. How do they keep doing that, they don't even know most of the time but they just do it. Charlie Austin is one of those unique kids. You want to mark up, use somebody else, you want to hold the ball up and wait, use somebody else, you want somebody to get crosses in and get to the bye line, use somebody else.

Charlie Austin in the box, four chances, one missed hit the post and stuck two away. He's not the fastest, fittest, strongest but just watch his instinct it is brilliant. He doesn't do ordinary but just let him play his way and he will get a bucket load of goals if the ball is put in to him.

He has done it at every level, the way we have treated him was just stupid given his ability and our inability to score. The way we played on Sunday was the way to play to Charlie Austin not the 600 pass dross being put forward by Pellegrino in thirteen matches as the way to play

Interestingly* we made more passes, and more short passes, on Sunday than any other game all season

* Interest not guaranteed

But we hit long cross field passes to the full backs and got to the bye lines. We made more passes in the opponents half and a lot less passing around the back four and midfield going nowhere. PEH made more passes than anybody else, 96 with better accuracy and more tackles than anybody else on the field. We also played with a higher tempo.

No doubt. I dunno that it was a tactical change though so much as doing the same things, but Better. I certainly thought our attacking was a lot like the last game I happened to actually see, which was West Brom, where I was also Quite Impressed, except on Sunday there was you know, More Of It. And a Less Obstinate Opposition.

This is very true and i fear sunday papered over cracks, a better defense would have stopped two crosses, we need to get forward quicker and stop being cautious even when in opposition half.

Possession stats mean nothing , goals count

Saints couldn't score goals this season with Shane Long up front; with Charlie Austin they can. Having a goal scorer up front makes a massive difference. Look at how Everton are struggling, now that they have lost theirs, Lukaku. We certainly struggled for goals after our 2 top goal scorers, Mane and Pelle, were sold. The crucial difference between the top teams and the bottom ones is that they have great goal scoring strikers, like Aguero, Kane, Vardy and Lukaku. With a Premier League goal scoring rate of a goal every 2.5 games, Austin is a fantastic asset for a club like ours. Of course, when he isn’t selected Austin can’t score and when Long is selected he can’t either

Those long cross field balls were reminiscent of the Morgan Schneiderlin days. Whatever happened to him? Loved our tempo on Sunday!

In fact, Lukaku's scored 8 goals and had 3 assists in 13 Premier League games so far this season and scored 12 goals in 20 games in all competitions. But, you can't even spell his name and think "Jason Dodd is a legend". Whatever. You really don't know much about football, do you?

Jason Dodd played circa 400 games across 15 years for us, he absolutely is a legend.

The truth is we've been able to score goals all season but if you don't pick your goal scorers and you don't support them you won't score.

It will be interesting to see if MP has learnt something this weekend, if he has then great and if he hasn't then he'll be gone soon enough.

He'd have to be one stubborn SOB to just ignore what happened on Sunday and go back to the failed ways.

When he starts regularly, Austin is a 15-20 goal a season Premier League striker.
