Maybe Dani Osvaldo coupled with Duncan Ferguson would have yielded a more " concentrated" approach on the training field for the first team?

He’s been doing them since July 16, no idea how he has been getting on.

I say give the guy a chance- and support the saints!

First team coach= laying out cones, distributing bibs, implementing the manager's training sessions (because the manager has better things to do than freeze his b*****ks off) and generally engaging in motivational bantz.

Like his predecessor Eric Black, his influence will be limited. The rest is mongboard melodrama.

Can't understand why the Womens Director of Football Lois Fidler hasn't been elevated to the First Team Coaching Staff? She is more qualified than Kelv holding a UEFA A Licence?

Board think MP has lost the players, don't want to sack him as it admits mistake/have to pay compensation, so have put a popular figure in to try and turn it around and help MP.

A new assistant coach who is an Argentine or a former colleague of MP from Spain would be more of a concern. This is a "you'll do" appointment, suggesting an expectation that things are likely to evolve in the coming weeks.

Whatever you think about this move, it certainly isn't that MP is secure in his job.

This sets up nicely for his unveiling as first team manager for our exciting League 1 campaign in 2019/2020.

Was there ever any explanation as to why we got rid of Sammy Lee who had an extremely strong resume as an assistant & was part of an extremely successful set up.

Since then we’ve gone to the useless relegation specialist black and now to a complete rookie in the role.

Not sure if this is a bit of a fop to the supporters, perhaps intended to give a friendly face in the coaching set up to try and deflect the fans anger, or a fop to the players if its true that MP has a strained relationship with the squad.

Feel a bit sorry for Kelvin as this propels him into the front line and gives a bit of a thankless task. If he does well presumably MP soaks up the credit, if results continue as they are through no fault of Kelvin's, he might find himself out if a new man arrives and wants to bring his own team.

He will certainly be a popular caretaker if called upon though.

I only remember one Eric Martin error, when he dropped a West Ham free kick over the line in the 3rd round of the FA Cup in 1975. Think that might have been his last game for us, certainly one of them, before Lawrie brought in firstly Steve Middleton then Ian Turner.

Ian Andrews was pretty poor as I recall.

Ridiculous decision.....used to appease the disgruntled fans,along with the long list of players we are now linked with.

There’s no pulling the wool over the eyes of everyone in here, only those supporters not enlightened enough to be a part of this self-reinforcing knocking shop.

Not if the club think he's been doing a good enough job behind the scenes. He hasn't just walked into this job by the way, I know first hand that he has been taking all of his coaching badges (succesfully) and is highly thought of at the club in that regard and has been in and around the first team for the last few months.

Might be a smart move. The manager makes the decisions and Kelvin offers support but no interference. Does his job, upsets nobody, loyal, useful...

So if the master plan was to appoint Kelvin to placate the fans, that appears to have backfired big time.

I feel a bit under informed to post on here, a little bit inadequate because of my lack of knowledge. Unlike the vast majority of posters in this thread I have no idea of Kelvins coaching abilities . Do not know what badges he holds or which ones he's taking, do not know whether he's got the makings of a decent coach or not. I do not even know what his specific duties are within his role . I did think about posting anyway, but decided that it's probably better to know a bit about it before doing so. I don't want to be seen as just confirming my prejudice against every decision the club makes.

Lots of respect for Kelvin but this finally goes to show the reed needs to be moved to a home for the elderly.... clueless beyond belief. What we need is a quality offensive coach.

This is way too simplistic. A proper coach watches the players train and gives advice on technique, movement, positioning. We have plenty of young players that still have a lot to learn despite being professional footballers. Coaches are meant to coach, not be glorified ball boys.

If they're gonna sack MP, maybe they need someone to appoint as interim manager! Ha ha.

Obviously, I have no idea about Kelvin’s coaching skills or how influential his player-liaison role has been, but it seems pretty clear that there has been a serious trust/respect problem between the players and the management/board over the last 18 months. Coincidentally, the period since Kelvin was appointed.

Maybe he’s just been a loyal servant of Puel/Pellegrino, maybe he’s been too junior to have any impact on player morale or maybe he’s given the players a route to moan to the board over the head of Puel/Pellegrino (and may have helped persuade Les to sack Puel).

Whichever of these three is true, it’s hard to see how he can have had any positive impact on the trust between the players and management/board to have earned himself this promotion.

The only way I can imagine he’s had a positive impact is if he’s managed to prevent the players’ attitudes over the last 18 months from being even worse. Hard to imagine!

Making a 'safe' internal appointment like this might paradoxically indicate that the board don't really have a lot of faith in long-term prospects of the coaching staff - especially if something of a clear-out is required to bring in a new manager.
