Lets see if it still happens when there isn't Decembers turn around of games. Its been about keeping fresh legs on the pitch.

Yes if your face fits...... Some don’t get rotated at all others hardly at all and some all the time....

Pelegrinio doesn’t rotate, he stamps his authority and far too much...

Rubbish. If there is adequate comparable player in the same position he'll rotate in weeks where we have two games.

Could we be about to sell FF?

Pure speculation on my part, but he was dropped somewhat unexpectedly....when it could have happened weeks ago.

Probably nothing to the timing, but you never know.

Timing probably has something to do with conceding 5 in the previous game he might have dropped some of the back 4 if we didn't have so many injuries.

Perhaps I have got this wrong, but isn’t there a big difference between being dropped and being rotated? It also seems to me that managers who win matches when rotating players are football genius’s whereas those who don’t apparently don’t know what they are doing.

I think people struggle to get their head round his and dinosaurs like Dave Merrington don’t help. Like it or not rotation is here to stay, particularly when you’ve got a squad where most players are much of a muchness. A lot of it is about avoiding injuries, so there’s nothing tangible to judge whether it’s worked or not. Would Cedric & Bertrand now be on the sidelines had they been rotated more, would PEH be playing so well, if he hadn’t been. Who knows? The way I look at it, the club have the medical expertise , have the data from training and matches, they’re probably best placed to decide who needs a rest and who doesn’t

I have and I do believe we did contribute to them not playing well. I also believe United are not performing particularly well either at the moment. I'm just trying to be level headed and not get carried away with the performance as we have been downright awful for the majority of the season.

It was particularly pleasing to see the players genuinely working for one another and hopefully the manager.[

McCarthy played well yesterday. I was anxious before the game, as those who have seen him play for the "reserves" have reported back that he makes errors. But he looked good yesterday. Nothing too difficult to save, true, but he got himself in the right places. I'd like to see him retain his place, but maybe MP was thinking 2 games to play in 4 days allowed him to give both keepers a game. I have no insight on what MP is thinking, just wondering.

And on whether FF could move on, again I don't know, but a couple of weeks ago on Talksport someone was seriously suggesting FF should go to the World Cup as England's #1 keeper. Joe Hart hasn't been great and that caller didn't think Pickford, Butland et al were up to it, and he was serious that Forster should be the main man. So.... some do rate Forster. Don't think it would be impossible to sell Forster. They don't see what we see.

And finally, some suggest that KD coming in as coach may be a factor in McC getting a game? I don't know. I have often wondered why we have a specialist gk coach when SKD is in the building. Surely he can be the GK coach and we let whatsisname pursue his career elsewhere?

My suspicion is that after 76 games Fraser Forster was just being given a break. Whatever people say he is a good keeper, maybe not outstanding but enough to get in the England set up. As much as I buy into the romance of Alex McCarthy finally getting a game he has had a whole career to demonstrate he is a premiership keeper and hasn't.

so McCarthy has one good game and some of you want to ship Forster off? i thought the whole point, when Forster was off form, was to have competition at the GK spot.

Forster has quality, let the two have a healthy competition for the spot. Keep each other on their toes.

I wanted to ship Forster off before McCarthy played to be fair.

Me too. Abysmal, and one of the reasons we’re in the mess we’re in

Yup. Put me in the bracket too, said he was sh1t all along. Frustrating we persisted for so long. Has never had many of the basic fundamentals a professional GK should have.

Hands that catch. Legs that can jump. Ability to do anything but stand back and say “that’s a worldie” to every shot that comes in.

That's pretty much it... I think we over-glamourise his few 'good' games for us (Arsenal away, twice... errrr.... any more?) and tend to kid ourselves that he's consistently been solid at some point in his career with us when the reality is, he's a had a solid defence and midfield in front of him for a long, long time and was relatively untested in a lot of games... but when he was, IIRC, there was always at least one cock up per game. Most of the time it led to nothing, so it gets airbrushed.

I'll join that bracket too. Some have said Forster only needs better coaching, but it's his fundamental deficiencies that let him down. He hasn't got "good hands", the ball doesn't clunk into the gloves, it all looks laboured. He isn't a good mover. These things cannot be coached - it's frustrating that this situation has meandered on so long; I'm not saying McCarthy is the long time answer, but it just seems like a better balanced side with Forster out. He is only trading on reputation rather than performances.

I would be *amazed* if Forster was being rotated...after 76 consecutive Prem games on the spin - which highlights all you need to know about goalkeepers requiring rest/rotation. If Forster is 'rotated' back in, I'll be nothing short of incredulous. He could probably do with a lengthy stint in the U23, learning/being coached to play to his strengths/with more authority.

Should he have saved the second goal ?

Second goal, not a chance.

I am a bit surprised that nobody has mentioned his failure to deal with the first goal. A header back across his box that drops 4 yards from goal just in front of him? If Forster had missed that he would be getting crucified on here.

No, he wouldn't.

  • 4 weeks later...

Has done well since he’s come into the team, comes for crosses and gets down for low shots 163262 times faster than Forster. IMO, instilled some confidence at the back so we have one less problem position to worry about. Wonder where we might be on the table now if Forster had been dropped earlier.

Thoughts for next season, sell Forster and bring in a new keeper (tough on the length of contract Forster has remaining)? Trust in Alex as first choice next season (Just feel he’s not quite good enough as first choice, may be proven wrong)? Somehow miraculously cure Forster from his massive dip in confidence this season (Very tough especially for keepers once they’re dropped, Joe Hart never really reached the levels he was at Man City once he was dropped and subsequently moved on)?

Is the correct answer, I don't care how long he has on his contract. That new contract was the low point of the summer, couldn't believe it, what the hell was Les thinking?

I think the point about the contract is that no-one else will match his wages for that long? Anyone who would want to sign him wouldn’t give him that deal.

I thought that watching McCarthy coming out for a corner late in the spurs game (Forster would have just stood on his line gawking) and taking the ball. I wonder how many points Forster cost us this season?

From my vantage point McCarthy is an infinitely better keeper than FF. Excuses were made about post-injury and bad coaching but in the end you have to trust your eyes, Forster is a poor GK.

Interesting. At one point FF was superb, but I am sure the injury he suffered has made a big impact on him. Certainly seems less mobile.

I’ve been impressed with McCarthy so far. He’s not amazing, but his proactiveness and confidence has improved our whole defence IMHO. Obviously, the results haven’t backed this up yet, but big improvement.

I assume Forster is here for the long-term because of his contract/wages putting off realistic bids. I think he’s massively over-done his muscle build-up which is why he has become so slow and inflexible (he was hardly a speedy gymnast type before, but was much better than he is now). His confidence is clearly low too.

I think reviving Forster will take a long-time, so I think we need another keeper (loan maybe) to back-up McCarthy. I’d be very worried if McCarthy got injured this season and Forster had to be recalled.

Pretty much McCarthy isn't doing anything special just the things you expect a half decent keeper to do but it makes a difference

gets down quickly, not a cluster with the ball at his feet and actually leaves the goal line to clear the ball.

Weird how bad Forster has become and I would welcome getting rid should we stay up.

McCarthy needs to stay between the sticks now unless one of his arms falls off

I would say even if one of his arms falls off. He may not be the best keeper in the world but compared to Desparate Dan he is Lev Yashin. Forster had an occasional blinder but otherwise he is not even average.

Earlier in the season we did dominate some games went a goal up only to be pegged by the opposition because of calimity Frazer's crappy goalkeeping.

One of the main reasons why we are in this position at the moment as he cost us a lot of points.

Most from shots from way outside the penalty area too.
