It comes from 184 apps and just 43 goals in two very average leagues. Sure, I'll accept that his playing time has been limited at Monaco but that doesn't hide the fact he couldn't score in Argentina either...though that could have something to do with the useless coach he was playing under which isn't going to change coming here

His return at Estudiantes wasn't as good as Monaco (a goal every 2.4 full games (full games based on 90 minutes played) vs a goal every 2 full games) and had one poor season (2012/2013), where he returned 4 goals in 16 full games. He also had a poor season at Monaco (2015/2016) where he returned 5 goals in 21 full games. His final season at Estudiantes he scored 13 goals in 22 games (18 starts and 4 on a sub) and returned a goal every 1.5 effective full games. His last 2 seasons at Monaco (last season and this season) his return is a goal every 1.49 full games a goal every 1.1 full games respectively.

I don't know if this will appear correctly as I'm pasting it from Excel -

So basically not very good then. Has never scored more than 13 (sorry once, scrolling wasn't working) in any one season and that's in some average leagues. Also, there must be a reason why he is always on the bench...maybe because he's not good to enough to be the number 1 striker at a club and because no decent manager rates him.

Anyway, I'm done with this. I'm uninspired but remain hopeful. I think it's a massive gamble and we already have 2 out of 3 strikers who are incapable of scoring at the club.

God we've got some planks amongst our support . Give the guy a chance . So what he doesn't start for Monaco , neither would Pelle , Sam Gallagher or JRod. Ronnie Ekland couldn't get in the Barca side, was he shiete . When Chelsea are looking at Crouch & Glen ****ing Murray , it does show it's not that easy

Some top reasoning there, well done. You've failed to grasp even the salient points of why myself and a couple of others think this is a huge gamble that we didn't need to take. A gamble that our prem status largely depends on.

At least St Jim presented a well reasoned response other than 'get behind the team ffs'.

At the end of the day, our team is crying out for a target man in the mold of Lambert or Pelle. This is so he can hold up the ball and bring midfielders into play because Pellegrino likes to have the midfield a bit deeper. If Carrillo can score 10-15 goals a season for us, then he'll have been a decent buy. Any more than that is excellent.

I wish some of our posters would learn from previous experiences and stop writing off players before they've even kicked a ball for us. It's v irritating.

Sorry said I was done, but I clearly wasn't.

That's all well and good, and if this was the case I'd agree completely that he was a useful if not expensive signing. Unfortunately, we don't break forward from midfield in numbers or at pace, we haven't all season preferring a more reserved approach to prevent the counter (it's worked so well). So whether he holds the ball up well or not is largely irrelevant unless we are going to change our entire approach (which MP has shown he's incapable of doing).

As for 'give him a chance'; which part of 'we do not have that luxury as we need goals now' are you people not getting.

As for being irritated, I'd suggest then that a football forum isn't for you if that's the case. People writing of Pelle, Mane or Lambert for example when they had demonstrated they could find the target on multiple occasions were wrong to do so, that's not the same case here.

To be honest, we need a box player. We have everything except a box player.
Exactly there have been to many games this season where our pressure hasn't counted (and teams have inevitably hit us on the break). I've good vibes about this chap coming into how we're set up now.

Our midfield DO break forward when we attack but are behing the ball by some way at times because they sit deeper. The target man will massively help bring other players into play, especially the likes of JWP.

As for the 'we need goals now' comment. Who would you have us buy exactly? Any striker outside the PL is a risk because the style of play massively differs from nearly every other league out there. A LOT of foreign strikers struggle in the PL. So tell me, which 20 goal a season striker would you pluck from thin air that will be in our price range both fee and wages and would cut it in the prem? Even Theo would've been a risk. Every signing is a risk.

Like I've said before, i'd have hoped our fans would've learnt by now not to write players off before they've even kicked a ball.

This lad is exactly the type of striker we've been crying out for. He retains possession as well, which will help prevent fast counters. Give the boy a chance.

You say we do, I say we don't. It's like watching paint dry watching Tadic/Boufal/JWP and worst of all Redmond get forward in support of our lone striker.

As for the, who would you get then bs, I've answered that above and on other threads. What, you think in all of the world only Carrillo is available?

He has kicked a ball, it just hasn't often ended up in the goal. In fact, he hasn't 'kicked' a single ball into the goal this season.

I truly honestly hope in the most inaccurate person on this one, I really do. I don't take pleasure in being negative about a potential signing BUT I think this is a risk that we actually don't need to take, and if I am right it'll cost us our prem status.

Charlie Austin - 10 in half a season before, 18 Prem goals the season before

Graziano Pelle - 26 goals the season before we signed him.

Sadio Mane - 23 goals

Jay Rodriguez- 21 goals

Ricky Lambert - 29 goals

Billy Sharp - 10 in 20 game half a season

So yeah, I don't think it's impossible to bring in proven goalscorers whatever level we're at, and funnily enough I think the pool of strikers can extend beyond this guy who people are fudging figures to pretend he's some goal machine.

That’s good. Off you go and find them then. And I mean currently playing in a non-Micky mouse league.

Then our little debate is done.

I think the lad will offer us what we really need, you think he's a risk too big. I do think he's a risk myself but so is every signing.

Agree to disagree.

I'm not employed by the club sweetheart.

Funnily enough those "micky mouse league" players have all made a better bigger and more successful impact at our club than those we have signed who were not getting games in non micky mouse leagues.

Hojberg, Gabbiadini, Lemina amongst others have arrived from oooh exciting non micky mouse league and....flopped. Whereas our crappy old micky mouse players like rubbish old Pelle, rubbish old Mane, rubbish old Virgil, rubbish old Jay Rod, rubbish old Wanyama clearly didnt.

Ten days ago I bet you'd never even heard of this guy, now we've all got to have unshakeable faith in him.

I didn't realise that "Not being good enough to get in the Monaco side" was a prerequisite for a new signing these days.

I'd prefer a more straightforward prerequisite - say, demonstrates consistent goalscoring ability over a sustained run in the team we are signing from.

But that only worked for players like Austin, Pelle, Mane, Jay Rod so obviously that's impossible and unreasonable now even though we have done this with success multiple times. Perish the thought we sign someone who can hold down a place in a team.

Sebastian Haller. Should've gone for him instead of Gabbi and half the price to boot

Maybe you’re right, but last season he only scored 16 in a league equivalent to the championship, so he currently didn’t count as a 20 goal man (albeit he scored 24 the season before - the one we signed gabbi). Pelle scored 26 in the same league the season we bought him, although arguably playing for a better team.

Get it done. This guy and Promes would be an excellent window. Pellegrino out/in takes a back seat when we have quality attackers.

Puel's so called 'negative tactics' now obviously disproved at Leicester show that it was a lack of personnel he had to work with. He couldn't play smooth attacking football, because he just didn't have enough players of quality upfront who could do so.

In other words, I will give Pellegrino to the end of the season at least, if he gets these signings in.

It'll be the best litmus test yet of whether he actually create a team that can score goals and get them well organised.

His naitivity with substitutions is also a concern, with like for like replacements and strange starting line ups, e.g. Lemina being third choice.

That being said I just don't think Redmond, Gabbiadini, Davis, and some other stragglers can compete regularly at a top half team (if we are even that). We've had to rely on them, which we shouldn't have ever got into that situation. Their form is too inconsistent. Occassional league games for the young guys, cup games for the others, see what they can do.

Guys...........how do we really know how this guy is going to preform for us. you can look at his stats all day long if you want and they mean exactly nothing when it comes to playing for Saints. All I can say as disillusioned Mopo follower is lets give this guy the benefit of the doubt and get behind him and see what happens. We are currently in the relegation zone with a good chance of being relegated. The club have to try something to change these fortunes around. I for one have been disappointed that we have taken so long to make our 1st signing this window. we sold VVD on the 1st January and here we are on the 25th about to make our 1st signing. If we had not buggered about for the last 3 weeks this guy could already be settled into our side making a difference. At the moment I have lost faith in Mopo the same as I lost faith in Puel and look at what a great job he is now doing at Leicester! Lets get behind our team at every game because they really need us not a bunch of squabbling negative fans. I sometimes believe that some on here will not be happy until we are declared bankrupt and relegated to league 2 because they will then be able to say "I told you so"

Just to note, Gabbiadini, who most people here think is good, has a bang average goal record mainly because he came off the bench a lot.

When we were looking at him, there were articles pointing out that his goals per minutes ratio was actually very good and he was an efficient finisher.

So those pointing out this guy has an average goal record but it looks better if you look at goals per minutes have a fair point, plus Pelle had a bang average goals record in his entire career aside two good seasons in a league that is **** easy to score in, especially if you play for the better teams.

I mean 35 year old Dirk Kuyt managed to bang in 1 in 2 for Feyenoord over two seasons, in a league where the average wage is HALF that of the average Championship player and 10% of the average premier league wage.

So Eredivisie goals are not much cop, so Pelle's goal record was poor overall against decent opposition, yet he turned out all right so maybe we should give this guy a chance.

Sometimes some strikers are also more about how it helps the team rather than how many they score directly, if this guy can help open up chances for others and put away some chances that come his way then he could be a very good signing.

Frankly Gabbi is demonstrating why his goal average in Italy was so average. If anything he's partial proof that past stats can be illuminating about the future. Hard to escape the fact that he's been a huge disappointment for months now -and while we may not be fully playing to his strengths, better players usually have the quality and versatility to excel in a range of formations and styles of play.

15:00-15:30 section, five minutes from the end (so 15:25 live)

Says he's 'not a world beater but got it in him to be a very acceptable Southampton centre forward'.

This is well worth a listen for those who have never seen him play live (probably 99% on here).

Tim Vickery is extremely knowledgeable about South American players and is quite complimentary.

And he also bigged up Pellegrino. Would be good to see what his overall record is really like -rather than people forever pointing to his assessment of Gaston.

You have to put those signings in context of the time.

Lambert joined a big club in a little league, Sharp joined us at time when we were odds on to go up to the PL, Jrod joined a team on the up for a shot at the PL, Pelle and Mane joined a team that had just finished 8th and had Koeman as manager. All of them, bar Sharp, joined us in the summer.

Right now we are club managed by a relatively unknown manager, trying to sign someone in January and facing a real prospect of relegation. Our options are going to be limited.

Tend to agree but others on here seem to think he's a our best striker and is very good. But he still had an average goal return.

To be honest if this guy does what gabbi did when he arrives then that will keep us up anyway.

Carrillo has managed a return of at least 1 in 4 in 5 of his last 6 seasons. That's not too bad. But this season he's only scored in 2 league matches. He got a brace in a 6-0 win and a 3-2 win. Would want him to score in more than 2 games till the end of the season... although if he scores two against Liverpool to give us a 3-2 win he could be forgiven.

If Tim Vickery likes him then that'll do for me. He said Gaston would struggle to cut it, by the way. FACT.

Could have had Walcott for Loan to buy at the end of the season for less than this.

I'd love to see Walcott deployed as a target man (which is what we need)

I suspect we were in for both (Walcott instead of Promes)

Normally I would agree on this, but according to the telegraph we were after Walcott and a quick winger, which suggests Walcott would have been used up top and evidently Promes was on the cards even if we did buy Theo.
