It might work a bit like this...? (benefit of the doubt and all that malarkey :) )

Yes, if you give the benefit of the doubt. I was prepared to believe that with Pelle, for example. And Boufal.

But I'm less convinced on this one. And more to the point, as I don't think Pellegrino is fit for purpose, I'm not sure we should pandering to his needs in the transfer market anyway.

Les: “I’ve always been an admirer of Guido - he’s a good footballer and likes to play our way. We wanted four good-quality strikers to create competition. If you're going to play at the top of the Premier League, that's the kind of squad you need and therefore I’m really glad to have been able to add a player of Guido’s quality to the team“.

It needs an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 10. Les is still waiting for the nice people from India who phone regularly to provide MS upgrades.

Hasn't the period for free Windows 10 upgrades recently expired. Ah well there'll be another version along any day now then.

I would welcome this signing as another option up front. Whatever the cost he seems a different sort to what we already have.

We once overpaid for Shane Long in January, it's just the way it goes at that time of year.

But I remain mystified as to why Gabiaddini hasn't had more of a look in this season.

He's done more than Long. Over two full games less than Long in terms of total minutes yet two more goals. He has also accumulated his minutes through late sub appearances, not through 90 mins of being utterly useless.

I thought that Long was brilliant in the first half against Watford on Saturday. He may not have scored but he set up JWP for his first and was instrumental in the break leading to the second.

The problem Carrillo will have (if he arrives), is people will only see his goal scoring record, and particularly his association with an unpopular manager that many would rather see fired. Given that Pellegrino must be on thin ice at Saints, and would have been fired by literally any other PL club weeks ago, signing one of his players at this juncture seems a little short-sighted to me.

Why the f**k would Carillo come here, the state we are in ???

Its not a mystery why we havent signed anyone. Its either we are not looking (possible) or no-one wants to come (highly likely)

Money I expect. Don't know how well they pay their bit part players at Monaco. The stars get huge sums, not sure about the also rans.

By now there are probably all sorts of motivational/effort/fall out reasons in the mix too, but I think the main reason Gabbiadini has fallen out of favour is that Pellegrino has a set way of playing, and it doesn't work for Gabbiadini playing up front on his own. I would rather a manager looked at the players and figured out a way of playing to get the best out of them - particularly the strikers - but that looks like a pipe dream with the Pelican in charge.

What happened to Gabbi in the last couple of months under Puel? Aot of the criticisms that apply now also applied then. His form also dipped and/or we stopped playing to his strengths -one which, truth be told, are pretty specialised.

Please tell me you’ve made that up! Come on, behave, ‘our’ Les didn’t say that, did he?

It's a fair question, not one I have the answer to tbh. I do also feel that we were playing a lot more cautiously then too, but that then leads to a chicken-and-egg scenario. Maybe Gabbiadini's low-key performances were stifling our play, rather than the other way round.

But what I am sure about is that he is capable of being class. In the same way that Hojbjerg and Lemina both showed when they arrived, yet Redmond and Ward-Prowse have never quite managed (even though both have showed signs of potential).

No we didn't. (Not overpay) He signed just before the start of the 14/15 season and made his debut at Liverpool with Tadic, Pelle, Bertrand and Forster.

Correct. I believe it was Hull who 'overpaid' for him in January, only to sell him to us for double the price 6 months later!

Had a read on a Monaco forum.

Seems that the fans really like him as a player but would snap your hand off for 20 million euros.

Someone mentioned there that he has an injury which is why he isn't in the squad.

Basically Shane Long then....

Didn't you say the same for the last two summer transfer windows? Btw mostly the former. We need to keep to our budget and have perfected the art of 'dilly dallying' in a atmosphere of unrivalled complacency.

He had an injury but he was on the bench on Saturday last, didn't play though. Perhaps as Falcao is back today Carrillo is either

allowed more recovery time or on his way out.

what does the price means to fans anyway.

what difference will it make to the average Monaco fan if we paid £10m as opposed to £20m?

selling VvD will mean nothing to us this window!

More money?...........why not, a good contract clause will allow very little in the way of a money drop if the unthinkable should happen and more image time in the prem.

If a player wants to move to England but can't get a move to the top 7/8 then this season they're taking a relegation gamble by definition, the way the league is. We're clearly not as attractive as a year or two ago but we won't be a turnoff for everyone. What matters is how we approach the relegation release/wages in contract negotiations, which I'm admittedly not confident about.

I really don't want to write the bloke off before he's had a chance to prove himself, but is anyone really that bothered about this signing? Seems very underwhelming on the face of it.

Also it's concerning that he appears to be handpicked by MP as well. would point to the fact that we don't plan on pulling the trigger any time soon.

For the average person living in Monaco, there probably isn't a big difference between 10 and 20 million

If, and it's a big if, he is a Pelle type of player, then I think he could do very well for us.

We need a target man striker (should have been sorted in the summer), players aren't often available in January, so perhaps this is the best we can hope for.

Reading the Monaco forum comments in greater detail, that comparison works on plenty of levels. Many think his feet and technique are terrible, though he's outstanding in the air. If the sport was named headball rather than football, one poster notes dryly, he'd be world champion. Like Longy, he's very much a Marmite player, though he's chipped in with some important goals, especially last season and his commitment and willingness to work for the team are second to none.

I find it a little comforting that Pellegrino has realised a big problem with our attack is the lack of a target in the box and that our best form has come when full backs and wide players had Austin to aim for. Thus he's picked someone he knows can give us that.

I don’t think I have ever been less enthusiastic about a potential signing. I just don’t trust Pellegrino’s judgement plus this lad can’t get a game in a poor League.

The standard of the league isn't really relevant, what is relevant is the standard of the teammates he is competing with for a starting spot at Monaco. It is no disgrace to be playing second fiddle to Falcao.

Can't get a game because Falcao, one of Europe's best on his day, is in front of him. I'm also underwhelmed/undecided on this signing but best we can do is get behind the player and not write him off before he's played a single minute.

Correct, but a concern about Pellegrino’s judgement is relevant and probably justified.....

I really hate how people talking about writing a player off because some posters give initial impressions of a signing. He could be fantastic for us or he could be a total flop but so far he only things we have to judge him on is his record for another team so it's perfectly fine to give your opinion on that. It isn't writing anyone off, it's an initial assessment that is subject to change based on how he does for saints. Of course some signings are more exciting than others.

Is it Pellegrino or is it a Wilson/Reed/Black Box signing?

It's going to be tough for a South American striker who is new to the league to hit the ground running.

I'm a little more reassured that this looks close, because attribute wise he's exactly what we need. A powerful, tall centre forward. Someone to play off of. I'm not condoning long ball, but you need options and you need someone to give the rest of the team the opportunity to push up - he may not score bags and bags of goals, but what he'll bring us in holding up the ball will allow us to get more from the rest of the side

And our pacey wide player we seem to be targeting, who is also a 100% requirement for this team.
