Persian rugs

Anybody know much about these, or how to go about selling them? I've been asked to flog one for my mother, no idea how best to go about it. The Pars Gallery in Romsey say they'll do it on commission, which seems fair enough, but they want the neck end of £500 up front to professionally clean it before they market it.....my inbuilt scepticism radar has gone off, anyone here dealt with them?

No idea. But these people offer an online valuation and seem reputable.

Thanks for that link. The first picture that came up was a rug identical to one I bought in Esfahan for £100 many years ago. It's now valued in England at £3,700, and it's not even my best Persian rug. I'm not really a business-oriented person but if you want to make money, it's clealry worth going to Iran and buying rugs.

I read that as 'going to Iran and buying drugs'.

That is a really bad idea and I am in no way suggesting that anyone should do such a thing.

The one I have was apparently made in Esfahan. One company say its worth £2700, the auctioneers Nick put me onto say £300 - £500.

There's a Persian rug shop in the Triangle, obviously he'd buy it from you at the lowest price and sell it at the highest, but he is a good guy and would talk to you sensibly about options/cleaning, best place to sell it....etc

Well perhaps you try another auctioneer then Scotty, I gave you the heads up and obviously you are disappointed with the valuation. Perhaps the best way to find out its true worth, is to go back to the company who said its value is £2700 and want you to spend £500 cleaning it, and ask them how much they will pay for it like it is. I bet they wont give you an offer.

I'm sure the one you put me onto were far closer to the actual value Nick, just as I'm sure the other lot were trying it on. I'll probably go with the Salisbury ones but put a reserve on it, tbh if it's only going to fetch a few hundred quid I can make use of it myself.
