Suspect Kim's knackered NK's already fragile economy and they've run out of money, hence the transformation. Use the Winter Olympics as a catalyst and open up dialogue to get some cash in

NK's economy has never been functional to begin with. Perhaps the Chinese are putting pressure on (either financially or politically) to stop being such a bunch of nutters. Trump, loathsome though he is, does have a knack for schmoozing and pulling off a business deal. Perhaps he rubbed up Xi just the right way to get what he wanted in NK.

Whatever the reason, I doubt life for the average North Korean will be improving any time soon.

Whether by accident or design I suspect China and US have played bad cop and South Korea good cop. Very effectively too.
