Not sold at all on the idea of us signing Ings. He was good before his injuries but not enough evidence that he will return to that form and we don't need another striker with such a bad injury record.

Peachy chimes in.

@SimonPeach: #SaintsFC are closing in on deals for highly-rated #MCFC goalkeeper Angus Gunn - part of the #ENG training camp for the #WorldCup - & giant Gladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard

Their full report:

Southampton edging close to double swoop to take transfer tally to four

Southampton are closing in on deals for Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn and Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard, Press Association Sport understands.

After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season, Saints have bolstered their squad with the addition of Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Mark Hughes’ side are still active in the transfer market, with a permanent deal for highly-rated City goalkeeper Gunn edging towards completion. The 22-year-old impressed on loan at Norwich last term and was part of England’s World Cup training camp, having been involved with the senior team for the first time last November.

Southampton are also looking to bring in imposing defender Vestergaard from the Bundesliga. Part of the Denmark squad that reached the last-16 in Russia, the 25-year-old would appear a timely addition to a side yet to bring in a defender since Virgil van Dijk’s world-record move to Liverpool.

Southampton’s only January signing was the club-record deal for Monaco striker Guido Carrillo - a player that has already been shipped out to Leganes on loan.

Dusan Tadic ended his four-year stint at St Mary’s to join Ajax, while questions remain over the future of Fraser Forster and Sofiane Boufal.

Is it worth taking the risk? To me its not but it depends on price and terms of contract if he does break down again.

Important to note as well that he had two long term knee injuries before those two as well.

He's had cartilage problems in both knees and an ACL, making him a huge risk IMO.

Maybe for something like £10 million with a few performance rated add ons, but nothing more than that.

Problem is even at a good price he would be taking up another place in the squad which would be a gamble with his injury record. I think it only makes any sense at all signing Ings if we move Austin on. Not saying I think we should but we can't afford 2 of our main strikers in the squad to be as injury prone as Austin and Ings.

Depending on the fee, Ings is probably worth the gamble. I thought last year he just couldn't get a look in due to Salah's form. Think he was fit from December onwards.
Liverpool fans reckon his pace has gone. And that was by far and away his best asset.

Didn't we sell Rodriguez because he was a shadow of the player he was pre injury?

Why gamble on a player whose best days are over when we could instead gamble on one of our own up and coming talents, or invest in one like Ben Brereton at Forest for example?

Don't see the point in signing Ings at all.

Are you being serious you think if McCarthy gets injured you want Forster in goal???

Just think I'd rather the money was spent on upgrading the first team, Lille upgrading on Redmond or one of the centre backs before we start worrying about just in case backup keepers.

Forster hasn't always been terrible and we got by with him as first choice for much of last three seasons so no don't really think it would be a total nightmare

The beauty of footy is its all opinions but mine is very much that if this was the situation last year and an injury meant we had had Forster in all season we would currently be preparing for the championship. Money v v well spent. Dont disagree about Frasers history - thats what makes it sad to see - but still think his confidence is too far gone here. Really hope he gets a move and gets his confidence back and with that a bit of the energy/footwork that was there when he was keeping very well for us

Fair post, to be honest I'm not against the signing of gunn per se, maybe he turns out to be the best keeper we have had since niemi certainly sounds promising. It's just I wanna see the weak links in the first team replaced and the holes plugged so if it was a choice of getting in shaqiri/sisto or gunn or another centre back along with vestergaard I'd be happier as it increases first team strength whilst gunn may not even play one premiership game next season.

Anyway hopefully we are in the position where our goalkeeper isn't relied on to be player of the season this time and maybe we will still strengthen further in the positions needed :)

Gunn, Vestergaard and a forward and i imagine we're done? Any more and it starts to get difficult integrating everyone. If we're going 343 or 352 then we probably do have enough. Means we'd be looking to get more out of Redmond and JWP in advanced roles I guess.

Still expect to lose Boufal and Long. Just hope Gabbiadini stays. If he goes too, I'd hope we bring in 2 more attackers.

See west ham talking about selling Antonio. Happily bring him back.

Surely we need a RB too?

Assuming Cedric is staying, and we're now wedded to playing wing backs, we could probably find a back up to roam the right side from within the squad.

Harry Reed played there at times for Norwich, I think Armstrong has for Celtic, and of course we've got young Yan Valery coming through who certainly looks physically up to the task of playing against adults.

It'd be nice to have a specialist in place of course, but it wouldn't be a major surprise if we didn't sign anyone in that position.

I agree, it'd be like signing Rodriguez - good once, now, probably damaged goods. Sad I know, but signing a twice seriously injured player? Barge pole time sadly.

TeamTalk reckons that Middlesbrough wants Sam McQueen, and speculated that he might go the other way in a Gibson deal...

I’d be surprised if Gibson is still on, given Vestergaard looks likely.

Surely it will be one or the other. I can't see us signing 2 CBs this summer. We would then be overstocked on CBs.

Loan?

Interesting because they've signed Vicente Guaita on a free & given Hennessey a new contract.

No idea, cousins are big Palace fans and living in Southampton so just put on Facebook that they're in for him.

Funny how the rest of the country seems to think he's amazing.

Ings scored as many as Long last season with half the minutes on the pitch.

thats it then, get him in!

I'd be disappointed if we went for him really, there must be better, and more medically sound, options out there?

In other news, looks like we might be getting Santos in - we might have some decent CBs and backup for the first time in years

Ings....

2012/13 - Championship - 32 games - 3 goals in 1626 minutes

2013/14 - Championship - 40 games - 21 goals in 3539 minutes

2014/15 - Premier League - 35 games - 11 goals in 3035 minutes

2015/16 - Premier League - 6 games - 2 goals in 339 minutes

2016/17 - Premier League - did not play

2017/18 - Premier League - 8 games - 1 goal in 265 minutes

So he did fairly well in the Championship for one season, and OK in the PL the next. But really, if we are interested in buying him, why did we sell JRod?

Compared to Shame Long

2010/11 - Championship - 44 games - 21 goals in 3775 minutes (plus 12 assists)

2011/12 - Premier League - 32 games - 8 goals in 2183 minutes

2012/13 - Premier League - 34 games - 8 goals in 2157 minutes

2103/14 - Premier League - 30 games - 7 goals in 2241 minutes

2014/15 - Premier League - 32 games - 5 goals in 1538 minutes

2015/16 - Premier League - 28 games - 10 goals in 2111 minutes

2016/17 - Premier League - 32 games - 3 goals in 1347 minutes

2017/18 - Premier League - 30 games - 2 goals in 1577 minutes

Is Ings really that much of an upgrade over Long??

Apart from lazy journalistic links, has there actually been anything reliable from the usual sources re: Ings? Seems we’re getting ourselves wound up over what is at this stage nothing.

Last week in the harbour hotel Southampton he told a mate of mine he’s had no approach from us at all and that Liverpool

We’re asking 20 million anyway for a permanent move and no way is he worth that when rondon is 16 million I know who’d I prefer

Maybe, but that was for a very attack minded Liverpool with an abundance of quality in the side, put Long in that side and he would have scored more.

I really doubt that he would. His problem is his finishing which for a striker is quite important. Ings has aleays looked better but not convinced either are what we need. I want to see a couple to compliment Gabbi and Austin. Get rd of Long.

He could have scored 5 times as many as Long and still be mediocre.

Are these the stats of a mediocre player:

2010/11 - Championship - 44 games - 105 goals in 3775 minutes (plus 60 assists)

2011/12 - Premier League - 32 games - 45 goals in 2183 minutes

2012/13 - Premier League - 34 games - 45 goals in 2157 minutes

2103/14 - Premier League - 30 games - 35 goals in 2241 minutes

2014/15 - Premier League - 32 games - 25 goals in 1538 minutes

2015/16 - Premier League - 28 games - 50 goals in 2111 minutes

2016/17 - Premier League - 32 games - 15 goals in 1347 minutes

2017/18 - Premier League - 30 games - 10 goals in 1577 minutes
