Assuming Bednarek keeps progressing at the same rate and Hoedt returns to his Lazio form, then yes. At least more so than adding a new CB and still having inadequate protection from midfield. And certainly far better than adding Schär who wouldn't improve us in any way.

What rate has Bednarek progressed at in about 5 games? He is totally unproven.

What was Hoedt's Lazio level (he was a third CB for them) and why were they happy to get him go?

Our previous spines were lightyears better than this will ever be.

Quite simply, if we don't sign better players throught the spine then we will struggle again because what we have is not a good PL spine, its a bottom 6 spine.

harsh but fair post. Bednarek did OK, but he was hidden in a back three and HOedt has to improve a lot. He made far too many mistakes. The spine of the side WAS weak and needs addressing. Not sure there will be much movement though.

If there isn’t = relegation battle. If Hughes wants a better CH and a leader, he may have to do what Puel and Pellegrino didn’t have the guts to do, but Ronald did, and put pressure on the board via the media

Agreed, Armstrong is bang average.

"Armstrong failed to make a big impact at Celtic Park last season, only starting 15 league games for the club." More of a Hooiveld type signing than a van Dijk one. Let's hope there is no truth to the story because it looks like the downgrading in he quality of the squad is set to continue if we are looking to bring in players as mediocre as Armstrong.

When his name was first linked with us he seemed highly rated, and certainly appeared to have a decent shot on him from distance. Strange how his stock has fallen.

Pity Rogic signed a new deal there, although in all likelihood our "interest" was merely a leak by his agent as a negotiating tactic coming up to the new deal.

Maddisons started the season well, but tailed off in the end to no more than an average Championship player.

Difference is, that we need some quality and have done for ages - you'd have liked to think that we would have acted early to create a bit of a buzz after a dreadful 2 seasons of dross football. It's not like we already have a good squad and we need 1 or 2 to improve us, we need 2/3 just to keep us in the league next year.

Agree we need to upgrade, but 2/3 will need to be shipped out and perhaps there is no interest in any surplus to our requirements.

But that was when City, United,Chelsea,Liverpool and probably Arsenal and Tottenham didn't feel the need to have 2 complete sides, both better than ours. Playing for the likes of Saints and Swansea was still considered better than having the occasional City run out in the League Cup.

Premier League football allowing for them to put themselves on show for an even bigger move, nice area to live and a club with among the largest wage budgets in world football.

A delusion solely held by the fans. Just because that’s what we achieved last year, it doesn’t mean that’s our target.

This summers transfer window will be the true indicator of our ambitions.

How do you know what SFC's wage budget is you may know what the wage bill was but with out European and PL money the club has probably a lower wage budget.

I am clinging on to the hope that Hughes would not have signed up for the job unless he had assurances he could sign some decent upgrades.

Hughes does not come across as the type who will take a job just for the sake of it and accept no means of squad improvement.

Only going by the Premier League site. My point is that there has been very few signings. A few of them were players already on loan or signed last year. You also need to ignore the Top four anyway, their business is normally done early and at prices that’s e wouldn’t compete with. If we get to the later part of July with no rumours, no signings etc and the likes of Everton,Burnley and Palace are improving their squads then I might start to worry

Really? the guy wanted a job and no one else was offering him one. Most of these managers are like Teflon if it goes bad Hughes will go (still get paid) and someone else will be desperate enough, in the second half of the season, to give him another job so I doubt he was to bothered other than what his wages and pay off will be.
