Suprised Bertrand isn't in the squad and that Heaton go picked as stand-by over McCarthy despite not playing since September. Also strikes me as quite a one-dimensional midfield with Henderson, Dier (even he's debatable), and Loftus-Cheek being the only out-and-out central midfielders. Little creativity in that midfield as well...

(Can't believe Welbeck got the call...)

At least we won't have to worry about any of our players being 'chatted up' over the summer, plus most of our players get the summer off.

Not bothered so few of our players will be there. I think we'll probably only end up with Yoshida, Cedric and Tadic there.

I would take him but bearing in mind that Man City and Man Utd have had English left backs for most of the season and Rose is fit and plays for Spurs.... if we're taking two left backs he would need to get picked ahead of two of Young, Delph and Rose.

"Big club" innit.

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't go.

Well, you were right, Benji. This squad confirms "top 6 experience preferred" :mcinnes:

Southgate has just encouraged our players to go to a Top 6 club for regular monitoring if they can, without expressly saying it.

Hojberg has already been confirmed into the Denmark squad, or could he be trimmed for the final 23?

Joke of a squad like I said , Hope England lose every game ! I hate everything that the England team stands for these days and haven't cheered an England goal since Rickies

Simo, you can be a bloody misery at times. Is it cos there are no Saints.

At least there's a really good chance of Bertie staying here next season. Failing to get a call-up will plant in other club's minds that he is damaged goods and over the hill and it'll make him less likely to hanker for a move.

That has never been an issue for Saints. It didn't need Liverpool players talking to Saints players to tap them up on England meet-ups. They would want to join regardless for the money and better chance to win things if offered the chance, it doesn't require a Liverpool player to tell them about the wonders of Anfield.

"Ryan is also very unfortunate in that it’s probably one of the strongest positions we have. Ryan has had a decent season but I just felt the others were ahead of him.

Not sure how Rose is ahead of him in any way. He only played 10 games this season.

I wonder if Bertrand is injured. It looked to me that he pulled a hamstring and so would be too much of a risk.

He hasn't been playing that well anyway.

I'm more surprised that Lallana is not in the squad, he has the guile to unlock a defence

No Betrand and no McCarthy on standby.

Southgate is a big-club b*tch...

I thought the whole point was that he was supposed to be promoting youth and giving players from other clubs a chance etc. Outside of the goalkeepers I think I counted 20 players from only the 6 or 7 biggest clubs in England... and half of those players arent regular starters.

Feel very bad for Bertrand - the best English left back. If he sat on Utd's bench or something he'd no doubt be there.

The 'wildcard' is Loftus-Cheek - but he'd definitely not be going if he was a Palace player rather than a Chelsea player on loan there.

Hopefully some goals with Kane and Sterling (if they can forget their truly terrible Euros performances), but the midfield looks weak and the defence not much better.

I am guessing Southgate has just pushed Betrand out of the SMS door with this decision (if there was any doubt anyway..)

C**t. I hope he loses all 3 games.

Oh come on Alpine, Ryan would be going anyway if he gets the chance. Southgate is hardly a big club manager as he spent his career at secondary clubs and so would know what it takes to get an international call. Young can play as a winger or full back

Can't see the justification of taking Rose over Bertrand, Rose has barely played all year and not sure even at his best he's any better than bertrand.

I also detest Ashley Young and he's not a left back, he's right footed for a start and always cuts back.

Unbelievable really that Ryan has been left out. By far the best English left back for me. Rose has hardly set the world alight this season in about 10 games that he's played in and Young ain't even an out and out left back! I suppose at least he will get a good rest up now and come back for the start of pre season :) McCarthy should have been called up too. Hardly going with players in form is he Southgate.

It seems odd to me. I think Bertrand is a better player than Rose.

I was wondering if sports science played a role in Bertrand’s omission. He’s played a full season. Perhaps they’re concerned he has too much mileage under his belt and is more at risk of injury during the tournament than the other LBs.

Although it refreshing to see some new young players with promise in the squad notably Harry Maguire, Alexander-Arnold & Rashford I fear big team bias and naive team selection is at work here.......we'll be lucky to make it out the group......the Iceland result in the Euro's last time out is still a painful memory for many England fans, think seeing that squad we'll see another result like that soon.....

John Stones (terrible positioning when defending set pieces and prone to giving away the odd penalty with reckless tackles he couldn't get a regular game for City this season)

Jordan Pickford (selected on the back of his potential but is overated in my opinion he has only 2 senior England caps had a mare of a season at Everton shipping a load of goals and making some glaring mistakes too)

Danny Rose (Has talent but has barely played this season surely Ryan Bertrand deserved his chance more than him having played nearly all season, a prime example of big team bias at work here).

Danny Welbeck (an Injury liabilty, with no pace and woeful finishing)

and to top it all off just how did Bompey's Lewis Cook who has played once for the England senior team made the standby list is beyond a joke.

Still at least Lallana isn't in (at the moment anyway) that selection would of been totally out of order

Should be an interesting World Cup, just don't hold your breath

The fact that Rose has been injured most of this season means he's a lower injury risk than Bertrand?

Don’t think Bertrand is going....

Haven’t looked back, sorry if a repeat. Just been told that Young and rose going... make of that what you will.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Pretty happy with the squad tbh. Personally thought Bertrand deserved a call up, think he’s pretty upset he hasn’t....

Bertrand has been gash this season. We have all said it

Had Bertrand played for Huddersfield or Brighton with the level of performances he has put in, we would be shocked had he been picked

I like the look of that squad to be honest

I'm sorry if Ryan is upset. The problem is that he hasn't played the way he did last season. The spark hasn't been there and perhaps he has paid the price for not being on it as he should have been

I can't believe hasn't been picked over

I think that’s a little unfair. Being as objective as possible I recognise Rose is a good left back but he’s barely played this season whereas Bertrand has played regularly for Saints and for England. Delph and Young are not specialist fullbacks and Young is right footed which isn’t a plus in my view, especially if England want to hit teams on the break.

In terms of versatility, Bertrand can play as one of three at the back as he did under Koeman. I know Southgate has walker at right back who has played there for England but just the once I believe and that was experimental. It’s a genuine surprise Bertrand has been dropped.

Bertie may not have been picked because of his "can't be ars*d attitude at times. Heaton wold not have made those saves McCarthy made V Everton and Swansea as he has not got the stature. Welbeck--poor choice.

Has there been any neutrals suggesting Bertrand or McCarthy shouldn’t have been left out, because I haven’t heard one.

Bertrand got what his performances deserved, dropped.

Had FF been dropped earlier, even the back end of last season and McCarthy played like he has done the past few weeks, he’d have been in. Personally, I’ve no complaints on that score.

Overall I’m a pretty decent squad given the resources. At least he’s binned the half fit and shown he’s not afraid to make tough choices. Others would have put Wilshire, Lallana & Sturridge in.

I doubt we want specialist full backs.
