aren't you forgetting that we are Southampton and we sing our own songs?

Great song, but can't understand a word of glaswegian :-)

Apparently lyrics are:

"Oh Brendan said, we’ve got to play him in centre mid,Oooooh words can’t describe, when we see him in the green and white. His hair is fine, he scores belters all the time. That’s why we'll sing this song, for Stuart Armstrong!"

Can't figure out how we are going to adapt it for us though :)

This could be the steal of the season....he can shoot, but against Prem keepers/defence he’ll not be as productive. Plus I get the feeling this is a player on the decline physically, which is why he’s not been seeing as much game time. Overall, if we were in the Championship I would be cheering this addition a lot more.

Eh? He's 26. Now if you'd said Steven Davis was in physical decline I'd sadly agree. As others have said lets hope he's a replacement for Davis and not Tadic.

He hasn’t played because of his contract situation and Brenda basically wouldn’t play him if he wouldn’t commit so rogic got the nod over him. Personally I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do/ bring to the team. We have been linked for a couple of seasons so SFC think he’ll fit.

He hasn’t played much as he was sent to a specialist because of a injury in at the start of last season.

Even 26 year old players get crocked to the point where their game time becomes limited. And Davis is at a different point in his career. I think Les is thinking we have Tadic replacement already in more game time for Boufal and Redmond sadly, so in effect Armstrong is a Davis like appointment.

His contract expires on 30th June 2019. Would that impact on his playing time in 2017/18? Perhaps it might if he was still at Celtic in the 2018/19 season, but at the start of last season he had 2 years left on his contract. Injuries more likely to be the cause of his limited game time last season.

It’s a debate but probably a bit of both. Certainly rogic coming to the fore didn’t help.

Yeah but Maddison was lighting up the championship is young with plenty of potential and championship player of the year, whilst Armstrong was a bit part squad player for Celtic and is 26 with most Celtic fans thinking it's a great deal.

If you can't see which one is a more exciting signing I don't know what else to say

There are clearly different ways of looking at comparisons. You could say that one is unproven at the top level and just recovering from an ACL injury whereas the other is a current international with champions league experience to boot !

On 18th August 2017 he signed a new 2 year contract, why would a player with a recently signed 2 year contract not be played due to his contract situation for the rest of the 2017/18 season?

In isolation, he sounds like what we would hoped to be getting from PEH or Lemina (though Lemina has flashed more than PEH). Davo is a slightly different player, less of a runner than Armstrong and more of a string-puller.

Could easily see a three of Romeu, Lemina and Armstrong. Knowing us we now sell Lemina.

It seems Boufal is on his way and, if that is the case, I hope we don't replace him as I would like to see Sims progress.

for some reason I can't fathom lots of people on here seem to prefer Hoj anyway so I assume they will be happy with that.

The very fact that players like Boufal are ahead of Sims suggests that he's not actually that good (yet). In a squad low on goals and creativity, the idea of selling an attacking player (albeit a crap one) and just not replacing him seems bonkers to me.

The bonkers thing would be to block Sims’ path. He needs more game time. All imo

Blocking his path would be not playing him when he is clearly good enough and I'm not sure he is.

Saints aren't a charity, it's up to Sims to show he is good enough for a place, not vice versa. I'd like to see him in the squad but we need some decent creative players to replace Boufal and Tadic.

Go and read Brenda’s comments re Armstrong then you will understand my point.

Pretty genius to work a football song into 'Enola Gay', although it is a slower version.

Seems to have an 80's terrace song factory there, 'can't get enough' etc. Shame we can't buy in a few of their original song writers as fans whilse we're at it.

And some of the Celtic fan passion

He's tidy enough. But seems pointless. He's not as good as Romeu, Hojbjerg, Lemina or JWP. So how many midfielders are we going to play exactly??

Offers something different. Hiw many goals has Romeu smashed home from outside the box.

Armstrong is quick, direct. Unfair to compare.

It did, because he initially did not want to sign, he wanted to leave last summer, and made it known fairly forcefully (after we showed interest in signing him). He reluctantly signed an extension last summer knowing that Celtic were giving him the new contract so they could make a better deal when he did go, otherwise he would have been able to leave on a free this summer. No commitment to Celtic so Brenda knew then he was going to leave and decided to find an alternative as he was no longer part of the future for Celtic. On top of that he picked up some injuries.

Romeu and PEH won't ever score more than a couple in a season. We are starved of goals from midfield. Maybe Armstrong will get 4-5 goals which will be good return for 7m.

He is more of an attacking midfielder than any of them, so would be used in a different role.

But he's nothing like Tadic or our AMs.

He's a box to box midfielder who likes to drive with the ball and make runs into the box - like a poor man's Lampard. Celtic forum says he would be perfect for Burnley given he works hard in central midfield, so yes his comparison is closer to the players adrian mentions than you assume.

To be clear, Davis covers alot of ground; what I mean is that Armstong is more direct with the ball at his feet whereas Davis relies more on guile.

Hojbjerg, Lemina, Romeu, JWP, Davis. Do we really need another CM? Bar possibly the aging Davis all the players he would be competing with are better.
Isn't he more of an attacking mid? I know nothing about him really but that's the impression I get from people saying he's a goalscorer.

Impressed if Armstrong joins for only £7m plus add-ons. The quality of the player matters more than the fee but it does look a good deal. If we have Sims and Armstrong competing for midfield slots, selling Boufal would be no loss given his limited contribution, and reluctantly, we may see less of Stephen Davis as age begins to catch up with him.

If Stuart Armstrong turns out to have anything like the impact of Saint's legend, Dave Armstrong, who gave us six great years in the 1980's, he'll be a great acquisition.

Can he score goals? Yes

Does he get forward and work hard? Yes

Is he value for money ? Potentially Yes

He has a bit to do to make up for his last average season, but coming to us could well be the impetus to return him to his form of 2016/2017.

It is a low risk and potentially good acquisition and I would welcome him here.

People writing him off before he’s even signed need to have a look at themselves.

Perhaps I’m a bit old fashioned but I’ll wait to see him play for Saints.

I also believe clubs our size have to sign some players with potential, there are 26 year olds in Scotland who are at the peak of their game. Obviously you wouldn’t want to sign one of them, but part and parcel of scouting is identifying the ones that can improve. Put the guy with better players, in a better league and he could blossom into it. Amateurs like us wont be able to tell, but a professional scouting set up, that’s monitored him for months, if not years, could do. Championship players don’t stay championship standard their whole career, some thrive at a higher level. Maybe he’s one, maybe he’s not, but £7mil is peanuts in the modern game.
