We don't know the 25 man squad yet, so be patient. All will be revealed.

I would rearrange your list thusly:

McCarthy. Gunn. Rose

Cedric. Reed. Yoshida. Vestergaard. Hoedt. Bednarek. Bertrand. Targett. Stephens

Romeu. Höjbjerg. Lemina. Hesketh(*). Armstrong

Elyounoussi. Ward-Prowse. Sims. Redmond

Gabbiadini. Long. Austin. Gallagher.

Clasie, McQueen, Forster, Davis, Boufal all sold or loaned out.

(*) I think Hesketh may be 'at risk' if we bring anyone else in.

I think Sims is still young enough that he's exempt from having to be named in the 25.

But your suggested list - whether right or wrong - does emphasise how bloated our squad is and how the second half of this transfer window is probably going to focus almost entirely on shipping players out.

I'd be surprised if McQueen was retained over Targett. More than happy to lose Clasie and Davis - if Reed's going be part of the squad and Slattery (who wouldn't count towards the 25) the next youth to be given a taste, the midfield is well stocked. I doubt Hesketh has a future at our level as well.

If we can shift Long too, that frees up a few spaces should there be any money left to bring in some new less crap blood.

McCarthy, Gunn, Lewis/Rose

Cedric, Stephens, Bednarek, Yoshida, Hoedt, Vestergaard, Bertrand, Targett

Armstrong, Elyounoussi, Redmond, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Lemina, Ward-Prowse, Davis, Hesketh, Reed

Austin, Gabbiadini, Long, Gallagher

Sims is 21, Forster, McQueen and Clasie sold/loaned out. One question mark is whether our 3rd keeper will be 23 year old Rose who takes up a squad place, or 20 year old Lewis who doesn't and leaves a space free for another outfield player, or whether we bring another old Pro keeper in. Personally I'd also sell Long and Davis and loan out Hesketh, bringing in a striker, attacking midfielder and another centre back but then I'm not the manager!

I do worry about our creativity though. Armstrong and Elyounoussi appear to be good acquisions in this field but I worry it's not enough, looking at who we have backing them up...

Agreed. Don’t think there is enough creativity or enough goals in that squad at the moment.

Yep. From the OP, the line that jumped out at me was "Elyounoussi. Ward-Prowse. Sims. Redmond". Not sure there's enough there, especially if Elyounoussi doesn't live up to expectations.

Does anyone know when the squad has to be confirmed this season? It is usually after the transfer window closes but after the season starts. But this season the PL transfer window closes before the season starts (good) but the European transfer window remains open until end of August, meaning PL clubs can still transfer players out until then. Means we could still have more than 25 over 21 players when the season kicks off, and transfer some out (to European clubs) by the end of August. I can't find a date for the squad declaration for 2018/19.

As things currently stand we have to trim 6 players from our squad (currently 31 eligible players, I think). Assuming Clasie, Boufal and Forster will be going, still leaves 3 more, can only assume this would mean Barnes, Hesketh and Flannigan would not be included. They could still of course play for the u23s, but more likely they would be loaned out, perhaps like Seager to the Dutch league. Of course this still means we have to lose more if we are to bring anyone else in. A striker still seems the most needy area, though with Gallagher being an upgrade on Carrillo maybe there is no need, maybe Long out and someone else in would be my preference.

I am not so sure you know. Gabbi is a proven goalscorer at this level and did well with us until we started the foreign style defensive experiments. Under Hughes with a more attacking formation and style of play, he may start banging them in again.

I don't think you can say he's a proven goal scorer, he hit a purple patch when he arrived but was then largely ineffective. He's never been prolific in terms of numbers, which is why I've always seen him as more of a supporting striker/inside forward type. We certainly need another centre forward, as we'll end up with the same situations as the last 2 seasons if we ignore that.

Can't rely on Austin, he will always miss big chunks. And you certainly cannot rely on Long to score goals. So we need some work up top for sure before this can be classed as a really good window.

I agree we need another striker as we have so few. But I reckon Gabbi will get 12-15 goals playing in a more attacking side under Hughes.

If Gabbiadini scores 12-15 goals and isn't even our main striker then we're in for a storming season...! I'd take one or two of our support attackers getting close to double figures to be honest.

I am rather hopeful he will be our main striker to be honest. I really think he can score that level under a more attacking manager.

Ah ok, sorry I misinterpreted your post. Yeah I think that's reasonable for the centre forward. If we could get 20 between the players who share the CF spot (i.e. Austin + Gabbiadini + 1 from Long) that would be decent.

Are we at 25 now with the current squad?

Obviously you can leave people out but thats far from ideal, and no way you would want to name four GKs.

Currently at 29 but that includes 3 players who are not currently with first team (Rose, Barnes and Flannigan).

Edit: in fact 4 players not with first team, as you can add Hesketh to the three mentioned above.

Have we always included 4 keepers in the 25 man squad? Seems a tad overkill to me, especially when it's the one position that you're allowed emergency transfers (IIRC?). A bit of a waste to sacrifice one of our better U23 strikers (Barnes) for a 4th keeper IMO

Some corkers in there. I thought Kornelius an unfootball like name but then spotted the following:

Rio Kamil - stage name of a pornstar surely?

Roland - how many more Rolands have there been than Ruperts?

Caleb Cassius - don't find many of them around

Siphesihle - shortened to syphilis by his friends

Thanks for the work putting that up here.

Shouldn't Jack Stephens not have an asterisk? :-)

He should be shown as home grown, yes. Looks like a typo. I've amended the list above even though it is a direct cut and paste from the PL website.

Also "Braithwaite, Benjamin Smales" is listed in the U21s - I think that should be Smales-Braithwaite, Benjamin

Despte Steve Davis' departure we are now back with the same probem we had in August with more than 25 players that qualify as over 21. So I'd expect at least two more out - more if we plan on signing anyone.

Barnes is too old to count as an U21 player and wasn't listed in the squad list submitted after the Summer window. Despite his Cup cameo I see little reason to think the club will be putting him in the PL 25 man list for the remainder of the season. As said above no point in listing Rose in the 25 as he is our 5th choice keeper so will be removed from the list when/if we sign someone.

Looking ahead to next season and Sims, Jones and Lewis no longer qualify as U21 so if you add them to the loaned out players, injured players and current over 21s that’s a total of 36 players, only threee of whom are out of contract this summer (Davis, Flannigan and Seager). So the problem doesn’t get any easier.

Of course, if we’re relegated the issue doesn’t arise but we’d need to offload players for other reasons.

We have to start making earlier decisions. Barnes for example is 22 and in his career has just one underwhelming loan at Yeovil to his name. Is he really making it?

Reed and Gallagher made debuts probably 5 or 6 years ago - are they PL quality?

Hesketh, Sims, Lewis etc - same question.

If not, sell some of them.

I think the club are scared some of them will suddenly improve and end up eventually at other PL sides. Probably a similar scenario with Targett. Nobody will ever offer that kind of money for him again, so we missed out there.

Needs brave decisions to be made.

Very true. I think chopping & changing managers hasn't helped any of them, but largely, I don't think we loaned some of them out early enough.

It's a shame as we'll probably never know on a few of them - the likes of Sims, Hesketh, Reed, Gallagher were largely ignored over the last few years. Would have been interesting to see how well they would have developed if given a chance and be trusted like Ralph seems to have given the newer crop.

You're right though - it's probably too late for some of them and we'll end of having to sell them on to free up squad space.

Have to agree. I don't see any of the players you have mentioned making it at this level. Obafemi is the only one who looks like he might be Premier League level. If they go elsewhere and turn out to be amazing, like Phillips or Wise, then so be it.

Agreed. And with Gabbi gone that would leave have one space, presumably for a replacement striker? Think we're trying on getting Hoedt out and a replacement CB in, and the Cedric / Lookman rumours would suggest a swap there (numerically, would obviously leave us light at right back - as Cedric is out of contract next summer, if he doesn't want to extend I can see why we'd sell while he's got some value, but impact on first team??). If we can't shift Hoedt it'll surely be a centre back, if we can I'm thinking we add a long-term right back or midfielder?

Either way, loads of work to do in the summer. Maya, Long, Classie and Cedric with a year left will be obvious candidates - possibly on freebies (along with any of the youngsters Hasenhuttl doesn't rate - Barnes, Seager and Flannigan will all surely be gone at the very least), though I suspect we'll do the honourable thing for a loyal club servant with Maya as we did with Davis and keep paying him while helping find a replacement club?

Does just show what a mess we've made of the last few windows, though. A bloated squad, many on big wages, and beyond PEH (when not s0dding suspended) and Ings (not ours) I'm struggling to think of anyone I rate as definitely good enough for a mid-table premier league side. Bertrand when he can be 4rsed? Redmond on his day?? Really isn't very good, is it.

Maybe someone will just be unlucky and be left out of the squad even though they are still at the club.

No reason why that cannot happen.

For next season it certainly shows that we need to make decisions on some players who would need to be included but are not really first teamers i.e Hesketh, Barnes, Sims etc

This should look a little different by the time the window closes.

Highlights some really good work done this January so far IMHO. 29 listed by OLAS (my favourite poster), and that was after loaning out Davis so 30 at the start of the window. Now down to 27, and with Cedric and Austin looking imminent that will be 25.

Of those, seager is on trial at Bristol rovers, Forster and rose are vying for 4th Keeper spot (I.e. One won't need naming) and two are out injured, we assume for the season.

This does allow for up to 4 spaces if we need/want/can find the right players. I do think Cedric going leaves us light there so hope that's covered, possibly same with Austin to a lesser extent.

Of course, we won't want to fill all empty spaces given that we have 3 u21 listed players moving up in The summer, 2 injured players to return and a number of loanees also to return (offset by three ending contracts who surely won't be renewed - Davis, falnnigan and seager)

Granted a number of these don't have a future but until we know we've moved them on (either for good or on another loan) it would be financially foolish to risk having too many, especially when we can fill some squad gaps with youth players (5 already with match day experience will still count as u21 next season).

I think it could be a full 18 months before we've fully completed the required surgery, but think we've made a good start and will complete most of the rest of the task in the summer.

A number of first team or first team fringe players still qualify as U21 this season, including: Valery, Ramsay, Jones, Sims, Lewis, Johnson, Obafemi, Slattery

Looking ahead to next season, Sims, Jones and Lewis no longer qualify as U21 so if you add them to the loaned out players, injured players and current over 21s that’s a total of 35 players, only two of whom are out of contract this summer (Davis, Flannigan).

Wow. A lot leaner -

Forster / Flannigan / McQueen unlikely to feature too.

25 man squads confirmed on PL website. We have named a 23 man squad - McQueen must be formally on Middlesbrough's books even though it was reported he was back in Southampton receiving treatment as he's omitted. Other than that exactly as expected. Barnes and Flannigan come into the over 25 list with Gabbiaddini, Davis, Cedric, Hoedt omitted compared with August. Alex Jankewitz has replaced Adam Parkes compared with the August U21 list.
