Could Southampton mount a World Cup 2030 bid?

A MLG stadium expansion thread, oh go on then... ;)

The Football Association is considering putting England forward as a potential host for the 2030 World Cup.

The last major tournament played in England was the 1996 European Championship, 30 years after the country hosted its only World Cup.

FA chairman Greg Clarke says the governing body's board has agreed to start work to see if a bid is feasible.

"This work will take place during the new season and no decision will be made until 2019," added Clarke.

The 2018 World Cup bid came at a time Saints were in a financial mess, so didn't put themselves forward. If the FA go for a geographical spread as they seemed to want in 2018 then Saints could possibly be up against Bristol, Plymouth, Brighton or even an unlikely Portsmouth bid to represent the South of England outside London. Even if other home nations join in, you would need a lot of stadiums for a 48 team World Cup.

Plymouth is miles away. Bristol is nearer.

Be daft to be in any pot that included Plymouth.

Think we would be in with a shout, Russia had stadia under 40,000 capacity so might even be do-able without expansion.

Very well geographically located with top transport links and one of the better training grounds in the country + a Premier League team (for the moment anyway).

Imagine there may be an attempt at a ground per English region, in which case we might have to compete with Brighton. I would imagine London and Manchester will have multiple venues and Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds and Birmingham would also be shoe ins. I also reckon you would likely see Bristol, one of Leicester/Derby/Nottingham, Sunderland and maybe Norwich if an Eastern stadium is demanded.

I would prefer an England only bid for the World Cup, but only because id quite fancy a joint Celtic bid for the Euros close by (Scotland / Wales / ROI / Poss NI).

I'd expect much more European demand for tickets than Russia, especially given it's going to Qatar and the States next. Would be the first World Cup in western Europe for 24 years!

Nah, far more appeal for Brighton or Plymouth I'd imagine. Bristol too.

Seriously, I'd say the only thing going for us is the airport nearby and maybe the port terminal apart from that and even in spite of the redevelopments, its a pretty dour city.

That, and we won't even seriously champion our cause anyway.

What we have going for us over the two you mention is a stadium already at 32000 and less likely to be a white elephant.

Given your previous with stadium expansion threads i'd say it's highly unlikely

"I expect Southampton to announce either an expansion of St Mary's or a relocation to a new stadium relatively soon."

Although you did get the bit about the red felt round the pitch right.

Brighton has 31k now I think and also has the advantages of being a far better tourist city, with closer and better transport links to London.

Only chance Southampton has ahead of Brighton is avoiding a total south east bias.

Yeah, but Chelsea used play in front of 17,000 people.

Listened to the radio recently about an England bid for the World Cup and they said that we don’t have the stadiums for it at the moment.

Regulations for a stadium to host a World Cup match is they can’t be in a residential area.

Manchester UTD, Liverpool and Everton was a no go but Manchester City was good.

Would Saints be classed as a residential area?

Usually with World Cup bids, new stadiums are built and old ones refurbished. So hopefully if previous countries histories of staging WC's is anything to go by, we could end up with some spectacular new builds and rebuilds - including SMS

I'd say the one thing we have over Brighton is an airport. Yes, there is Gatwick, but is it close enough? What are the FIFA regulations regarding the infrastructure of host cities?
