Just horrendous. The bridge was built in the 1960's. Span that fell estimated to be somewhere between 100-200m length with several vehicles on it at the time. Absolutely horrific accident for European infrastructure. Anyone know anything about the bridge or likely construction? Guessing this is a pre-stressing or shear failure given the location. I don't know whether lorry weights increasing have had an impact but as far as I know there were no weight restrictions. I crossed that bridge in January on my holidays, and it's a long way down.. I was surprised to see a number of injuries reported. I'd have thought doing a 300ft base jump with 1,000 tonnes of concrete instead of a parachute would be game over for all involved. Watching the news yesterday seemed to suggest that the Italian government have been pretty negligent in maintaining a lot of infrastructure. Might stop the moaning public when the council carry out works on the bridges around Southampton. Both necessary and preventative. Well yes, all I remember about the place was getting a flat tyre. Italy is a mess, caused by years and years of austerity and corruption so I expect they'll get by somehow. Interesting city, especially the old part, but the loss of the E-W autostrada will have an effect similar to closing the M25 and diverting round the North Circular.
