CONFIDENCE that is all.

Examples of those that have it:

Tadic is a class player for Ajax and you should of seen him tonight?

VVD is now world class and his performance vs Palace was outstanding.

Taggett at Fulham was a different player that he is for Saints.

Carillo/Seager banging goals in for fun.

Examples of those that have lost it:

Stoke are in free fall and they certainly have the players to win that league.

The current Saints team can’t string two wins together in 2 years.

If you took anyone of our players and stuck it into a winning team in the premiership they would look the part.

That is our problem right now and as a team it’s draining on our fans, manager, players and coaching staff.

We just need to string a couple of wins together and it’s got to start this Saturday otherwise we will creep towards another relegation battle.

Thoughts?

Yes,we will creep towards another relegation battle, however the reason for this lies far deeper than just confidence.

People fail to grasp that the margins at this level are small and that momentum can play a massive part in success or failure. We had it, Puel lost it, and we are currently in free fall. The stats over the last year suggest we are going down (no one is left with a worst record than us- apart from Huddersfield) unless someone can turn it round. Whether two wins will be enough to turn around two years of decline remain to be seen.

My fear is the leadership at the top is too weak to do anything about it. The good news is Huddersfield and Cardiff are rubbish so should fill the bottom two so we are fighting with about 9 other crap teams For the last place.

We should have enough quality to stay up but whether a team which has for example, all its CBs slagged off by the fans*on a consistent basis can get that confidence back remains to be seen.

*do the players really care if some random fan slags them off or do they even know? Well judging by recent comments- some fans view of Redmond has certainly been noticed!

In Master Redmonds case, its not random, when yet another sparkling bit of play fizzles out at his feet yet again, you can hear the groan from all sides of the ground.

Away from here bizarrely I hear very little slagging of the CBs when sat in SMS.

Always remember being at probably our first home game in SMS v Spurs, think it might have been Boxing day. We went one nil up and were defending like the devil especially the last 10 minutes and held out for the win against that nasty Hoddle chap, hoorah!

Driving home Mrs JBS turns to me and says "when that clock turned to 80:00 did you feel it, the whole atmosphere in the stadium got increasingly tense until the final whistle" I said "no.....probably because I was adding to it".

I think as a crowd we have gotten so use to being disappointed of late, that the majority enter the ground with hope rather than enthusiasm. As Lawrie Mac always said he told new players especially "Southampton fans are a gentile bunch, you as players have to get them going, but once they are going they can be a raucous as any crowd in the land". The players made some comment over the past couple of seasons that they would like us to make more noise pre match......... so the club just turn up the volume and play allsorts until the ref blows the whistle to start the game.

Tadic is playing well in a terrible league with a team that usually dominate everyone

VvD was world class before last season, we all know it

Targett was playing well in a league weaker than the prem in a side that dominated most teams (see tadic)

Carillo/Seager - your has totally gone

I think the damage gas been done. Les and Ralph's cycle expired start of last season. We used to be a very good side, now we are crap and success is staying up.

If we go down, we would have fully deserved it for being so bloody weird in the last couple of years

Tadic playing in a far worse league than the Premier.

VVD plays for Champions League finalists.

Good player but Targett won't be as effective in the Premier League - fact.

Carillo/Seager - WTF.

What are people moaning about? We've played Burnley (6th last season) and Everton (never win at Goodison).

We will be a lot better against Leicester.

Confidence but also committment, and most importantly, character. On paper last night, Stoke had better players in every position than Wigan but the promoted side simply wanted to win more than Stoke and had the momentum from last season.

After 3 wins in 28 pitiful games, I'm sure confidence is low at SMS but it needs someone in the pitch, whether that's Ings or someone else, to scream in some faces and wake the players up, get them on it at the start of games, not halfway through. That dreadful statistic might change that way. As fans, I don't want us to moan if a player tries something different that doesn't quite work, that's what WGS meant by 'bravery'. However, we are perfectly entitled to pick players out who aren't putting the work rate and energy in.

We should be trying very hard to lack Consistency - as in consistency in losing (or performing badly) - habits can build, both good and bad, and we have been in a bad one for 2+ years (for reasons much debated on here). Now we need something to break that cycle - freak performance, worldie goal, anything to break our bad run (luck?). Whatever happened to that white witch - maybe her spell needs topping up?

Did we not win the game she turned up at?

Remember a header by Pahars and winning 1-0.
