Hughes OUT

The Watford game showed some positive signs, i think we just need to start picking up points when the big boys come to town. I expected Watford to thrash us, but we stood up much taller in defence after a shaky start and looked brighter in attack.

I still think the club needs to get a long-term replacement for Hughes, but a quick sack and decision won't do anything, the key is making the right appointment. However after Les Reed went, the first step is to shake-up the football set-up of the club and Hughes remit is simply keep the ship from sinking in that time.

Whether he can do that remains to be seen, but i'm confident we'll be at least able to pick up points against the teams around us and might even get the odd result in the next ten games.

The few positives i can see is that Hoedt is improving, Gabbi started, El was on the bench, Yoshida was picked, Armstrong was given a chance and looks a solid player and a good box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal. Austin will continue to be a bit-part player as he is so horrifically unfit and slow.

If we get to January still in the mix in 16th place, we will need to sell Bertrand and Cedric and shake-up the full back positions, neither are motivated anymore and both look shadows of their former selves.

Hopefully the review looks at why we brought far too many strikers of average quality (Long, Austin, Carillo etc!) and never properly replaced Mane, Pelle, Wanyama and VVD.

I suppose you could call not getting thrashed by Watford a positive sign, but you have to be starting from a pretty low base of optimism.

We pressed with a little more energy (but not a lot more organisation) in the game, which was good to see, but aside from that I don't think the Watford game showed any great advance on previous performances. Moreover, I think Hughes' decision to pick Yoshida and Gabbi was really just a cynical ploy to distance himself from Reed.

Possibly, but they both played well, so he has no reason to drop them now. Regardless of how or why we reach that point, the important thing in terms of our prospects is that they should now be playing - because of Hughes or in spite of him!

I also thought we played some nice football at times in the first half v Watford. I think mainly because of the players on the pitch - if Austin or Long were playing then most of those moves wouldn't have been possible.

Decisive action from Fulham - perhaps we should now sack Hughes and hire Jokanovic. That's a plan.

Decisive action is unheard of at our joke of a club, I just don't get why we wouldn't have someone lined up to replace Reed before firing him.

I hate to mention the "C" word but Cortese would have sacked Reed and Hughes and put the new people in place the following morning.

Really? Yeah I seem to remember after he sacked Pardew Nicky had Nigel installed within hours...certainly wasn't some long drawn out affair, while we lost some league games and got knocked out of the cup, under a caretaker manager...

Brilliant bit of selective memory.

Pardew’s removal was a reactive thing. As opposed to giving Adkins the chop

In all the discussions recently it seems to have been forgotten that Pardew was responsible for bringing Reed here. They were both sacked by Charlton during the season they got relegated from the Premier League and when Pardew came here he recommended Reed to Cortese.

I was thinking about replacing Adkins, to be honest I can't remember what happen with Pardew but I think it's fair to say you have a bit more wriggle room when bankrolled by a billionaire in League 1.

Not selective at all that's how happened. It took longer than it should have to get Nigel in because we tried to wriggle out of paying S****horpe any compensation.

it took longer because it was reactive. I his results did not warrant sacking. His behaviour (apparently) did.

Adkins' departure was proactive.

surely you get that

Yep, I remember that exactly. And I seem to recall Nigel not willing to join us unless we compensated Scunny appropriately.

Not claiming to be itk but friend, of a friend apparently works on the matchday program and has been told to remove any mention of Mark Hughes. Could be complete b*llocks mind you!
When is our next matchday program due, 1st December, so I very much doubt this has any legs.

Pardew's sacking was clouded in mystery , stories about players wives etc at Saints plus stories about his mate Derek Llambias who ran Newcastle and casinos in London led to Pardews appointment at NUFC despite a 5% approval by NUFC fans .

I remember that day. We went to Bristol and won 4-0... when we got off the train we heard rumours that pardew had gone. To be honest I quite liked pardew but something went very wrong.

Pardew replaced Reed at Charlton so they never worked together, and Pardew managed Charlton in the Championship for the entirety of the following season after relegation.

I don't think they had any kind of positive relationship before, during or after their time at SFC.

I thought Cortese was a dynamic visionary who knew his own mind and didn't take sh it from anyone and made all the decisions his way on his terms.

Maybe appointing Les Reed was entirely his own idea?

I'm waiting for him to do something kooky like appoint his teenage nephew or go with Nelly.

Hopefully he wont go full Vincent Tan

His next move proved even more absurd. In early October, head of recruitment and good friend of Mackay, Ian Moody, was controversially sacked by the club. The Malaysian owner then decided to replace Moody with 23-year-old Alisher Apsalyamov, a Kazakhstani man who was on summer work experience at the club.

It's a combination of things not just all down to Hughes.

3 seasons now we have had players underperforming and have stupidly stuck by with the likes of Austin, Long, Redmond etc.... In a hope that they will offer some form of consistency on a regular basis or end product.

People say that this squad should be capable of mid table finishes I am not to sure.

We cannot deffend, cannot create and more i!importantly cannot score enough goals which is a receipe for disaster.

We became arrogant, stood still tried to polish to many turds. Made stupid idiotic decisions like Carillio, Our most recent signings ok give them a bit of leighweigh they need time to settle but currently look average at best.

Scouting who keeps bringing in dross for the last few seasons? Need a change of direction.

Coaching? Who is actually coaching and getting the players fit? They do not look fit..

As for Hughes time surely is running out I would of had the lads training double sessions on this two week break.

That's pretty much the crux of it all. People hold some of the players in this team too highly, thinking that they're better than they are. Maybe it's because they play international football? Who knows, but if I was in charge the likes of Hojbejrg, Cedric, Hoedt, Redmond, Austin, Long wouldn't get anywhere near the team as they are not good enough - and given that that is most of our spine, it's depressing and unsurprising we don't win football matches.

Many of players you've listed are better than their counterparts in most of the other teams in the bottom half of the table though. There aren't many squads in the bottom half of the table I'd swap with ours. No doubt the overall quality of player we have has decreased considerably the last few years, but a good Manager gets more out of this lot.

yes our squad is crap.

but honestly compare it to that of Palace or Cardiff... even Burnley... (exclude the fact Palace have Zaha too)

)

should some of the players in that team be on the same points or less as any of those?

that is really where a lot of our frustrations are borne from tbh- I do feel we have a decent spine in McCarthy, Bertrand, Lemina, PEH, Romeu, Gabbiadini, Elyounoussi and Ings.

The rest however I really do not rate tbf- Austin's one good season won't happen again, Redmond I have always maintained will never have a PL brain, none of our CBs are top 10 material, Cedric is too hit and miss too unfortunately.

Interesting interpretation of spine - cant really have a decent spine which includes one grumpy meandering left back (good as he is) as the defence! So often its all about building from CB and we have not sorted it. Romeu is a conundrum - one which i dont think anyone has really provided a good answer on on here - he was great after victor left and now cant get in the side and looks ponderous at best - wonder whats happened to him. Maybe a new manager could reinvigorate him or maybe he wanted to go and still does.

* Southampton are the only club yet to score from either a corner, a free-kick, a throw-in, a cross or a through ball.

* Southampton have the worst conversion rate since the dawn of actual time (4.59%).

* Southampton are the only team to have led at home in the Premier League without ever going on to win.

We also sneak in a mention with: "No side has had fewer different individual scorers than Fulham (4, same as Southampton)."

Ings scored a tap in at Everton from a flicked on corner, didn't he?

I’ll leave this here from the latest Jeremy Wilson article in the Telegraph...

“...there is a hope that the changes will inspire an upturn in form and, while Hughes is safe in the short-term, the club do not want to risk letting the season drift.”

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/11/19/southmaptons-off-field-overhaul-could-include-division-les-reeds/

He’s not going anywhere anytime soon. He might even survive a loss to Fulham.

There really is no point in sacking Hughes at the moment until we have someone with footballing knowledge to bring in a decent replacement.

There are all sorts of consultants available to help but the pool of available managers is pretty limited. The latter is the issue for me - most people said that anybody would be better when Puel went, then again when MP went.
