Hughes OUT

Does Kelvin still have Roy Keane's number? We'd still go down but the thought of our snowflake players being chased across the New Forest by Roy's dogs, thrown in the bath and punched out in the car park, while Roy pushes a whole stilton into Gao's face during contract negotiations, would make the whole R thing a bit more acceptable.

Mark Hughes has a 14% win rate in the PL as Southampton manager. Level with

Les Reed (Charlton)

Lawrie Sanchez (Fulham)

1% above Aidy Boothroyd (Watford)

Mark McGhee (Leicester)

Alan Shearer (Newcastle)

& Tony Adams (Portsmouth)

2% above John Gorman (Swindon).

Wow

I genuinely would stop watching us and attending games if we hired Allardyce or Steve Bruce. We never will, but the fact that some of our so-called "fans" think either option is acceptable is beyond me.

Monk would be a poor choice, Moyes would be OK because he didn't do that badly at West Ham but it wouldn't solve anything in the long run.

The likeliest option is a foreign manager, one we've never heard of.

Just hope that Saints have a new manager in the wings when Hughes gets the boot. When Hughes goes his two sidekicks will go as well, so we are replacing the key coaching staff.
key? unfit, poor tactics, not able to get defence sorted, useless subs in many games no great loss really.

That first 20 minutes v Chelsea still sticks in my throat.

My friend is Martin O'Neill's tenant at the Winchester house. He's just, this minute, been evicted without warning. Make of that what you will.

Well he has just lost the Ireland job so probably needs somewhere to live. Coincidentally it just happens to be near Southampton.

All we need is another manager with faith in Shane Long as a striker....

Time to be pragmatic. There is an enormous rebuild that needs to happen at just about every level of the club and in particular you could easily name 10 or more first team players that need to be moved on, and that will probably take at least 3 transfer windows to do it. Whilst that's going on we just need someone who can keep us in the league whilst we rebuild the foundations. Big Sam

Think Hughes has now had his chance but the problem lies with the quality of players we have. We do not have enough quality anymore and have a team of potential quality which are running out of time to show it in this league. Will another manager be able to turn that potential into actual quality and get us out of this 3 year hole? I'm not sure any on that list earlier will be able to do it thats for sure.

No ****in way. There have only been two times in my life when I have lost interest in Saints and gone to matches out of duty rather than wanting to. The first was the last few months of Branfoot and the second is right now.

But at lease during the latter days of Branfoot we had the 'fun' ot the protests after the match. Now though the support is like the team, sapped of any life, drive or fight, resigned to the inevitable.

We currently have Mark Hughes in charge. Mark Hughes.

Anything is possible.

A comparison with where were at the same stage last season. In terms of points won, Pellegrino was twice as good as Hughes:

2017/18 Pellegrino's Saints

P13 W4 D4 L5 GF13 GA15 PTS 16

2018/19 Hughes' Saints

P13 W1 D5 L7 GF10 GA24 PTS 8

Very interesting stats.

They also mentioned on tv that Hughes last 34 games as a PL manager he has just 5 wins (Swansea x2, West Brom, Bournemouth and Palace) 19 defeats and 10 draws.

= 34 games win ratio of 14% loss ratio of 56% 25 points from 102 points available. 0.7 points per game.

How anyone with a record like that is employed as a football manager especially in the highest league is just crazy.

The thing that winds me up is he talks about luck, bad decisions and creating chances = we are a good team. It is a football game, chances will be created by both teams. If every team scored every chance most games would finish 12-10 or something. Because you don't have a 100% conversion ratio is nothing to do with luck and to imply whoever creates the most chances deserves to win is delusion. It is like saying in a boxing match whoever throws the most punches deserves to win.

The problem with Hughes and why we he has the results he has over the past 34 games as a PL manager is simply because he is a **** manager. If you persist in picking players who are woefully out of form and are offering little ie Austin then that is bad management. If you persist in picking players who are making a lot of errors ie Hoedt then that is bad management.

I think it was Pep in a documentary that said one of the vital things of being a manager is to recognise when players need to be dropped. You can be good friends with them, they can be leaders behind the scenes, they can train very well. But if they are playing poorly you have to make changes. No matter who they are and what they have done in their careers. Your job is to win games and if you don't recognise players out of form that hinders your ability to do so.

To me it seems Hughes just doesn't recognise when players are playing badly. He seems the type of guy who will pick players he personally likes rather than their current ability levels/form.

We have some really poor players at this club so he is not fully to blame. But he is responsible for managing what he has and getting the best out of them. Picking the right players at the right times, changing tactics when they need to change and realising which players need to be dropped no matter how well you get on with them.

The fact we have so many players we bought on the bench that cost a fortune to me suggests that no matter who we brought in he would still struggle. Like he did at City. He lacks the skills required to be a top level manager in this day and age.

If that's not a case for immediate dismissal I don't know what is.

Yes, there are issues with the players as well, and I think there is an inevitable feeling about our impending relegation but let's do something this side of Christmas.

If you discount our games with the top 6, that means we need to get 27-30 points in about 16 games.

We are going down. Simple really

That is a very strange way to look at it. If it were true why have you not applied the same to the three teams currently in the relegation zone?

I do, but Fulham have jump to a different path. They will be above us within 2 weeks

We are cracking on with Hughes it seems

Paper spin perhaps but unlikely to help the perception Hughes often portrays.

Mark Hughes calls Southampton fans predicting his sack 'predictable' | Daily Mail Online

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6425179/Mark-Hughes-calls-Southampton-fans-predicting-sack-predictable.html

Not half as predictable as Hughes not training our players, picking the wrong ones, offering no game management and getting 0 points. Now THAT is predictable.

If the club is to get rid then do it right now, there really is not a moment to lose. I wonder if an emergency appointment of Allardyce till the end of the season is the way to go, forget the football - the goal is to stay up and he's a specialist at that. Whilst he's here the DoF - whoever that is - can figure out a longer term replacement.

Have some sympathy for Sparky because the whole club is a basket case at the moment and he was dealt a crappy hand but the results have caught up with him.

The ground is fast approaching, pull that rip cord now and at least give the next guy a chance of opening the parachute.

I love the bit where he’s quoted as saying “I’ve been through these things before”. Why’s that then Mark?!? If you’ve never seen the brilliant “Lucky Number Slevin”, this is Ben Kingsley’s character’s take on it:

“The first time a man calls you a horse, you kick him in the shin; the second time a man calls you a horse, you punch him in the stomach; but the *third* time a man calls you a horse? Well my friend, maybe it’s time to buy a saddle.”

Time to buy a saddle, Mark.

The future of Hughes to be discussed on Sunday Supplement show.

I’d say it’s pretty bleak myself and I sincerely hope he doesn’t have one.

But are the people who matter going to discuss anything?

He has to go. But we also have to get the right person in. It could actually get worse with the current decison makers in place.

correct. So is there someone available that can turn this around and then see us develop and prosper over a longer period?

Reluctantly agree. Need a tough professional streak added with much more robust attitude to training and fitness. Not fit - don’t get paid. Don’t mind if that’s BFS or someone else. Hughes being sacked would mean Hoedt dropped from the squad and hopefully gone for a cut price fee say £6m in Jan. Either way, the club needs to be out of Gao’s hands as quickly as possible.
