James McClean no poppy

I respect his decision not to wear a poppy, but as he dislikes the English/British so much why does he come here and take the money?

Because he wants the money obviously. There are certain organisations I don't like but I'd be quite happy to take their money. Principle are nice but they don't pay the bills.

Matic also not wearing a poppy due to it reminding him of his village being bombed , even though he's been wearing them in previous years !? As most people have said it's their right not to but I think it is also the right of those who wish to criticise them for not doing so , That's the freedom our war dead have fought for isn't it ?

No one can agree why WW1 started but freedom of speech wasn’t one of the reasons. WW2 can be said to be a result of the Versailles treaty that plunged Germany into economic disaster and allowed the rise of the Nazis . These days remembrance is being hijacked by politics leading to faux outrage because someone appears on TV without wearing a poppy and is therefore disrespecting the armed forces.

Not much publicity has been given to the disabled ex forces people who have lost their disability benefits under The new Universal Credit system which is an outrage IMO.

I respect you and your faux outrage. Can you please take this to the muppet show.

Maybe he doesn’t dislike the British, just the armed forces?

All this outrage is nonsense, it’s totally understandable why Irish wouldn’t want to wear them.

Probably something to do with British soldiers shooting unarmed civilians in his home town, I’d imagine. You might not like it, but you can understand his personal viewpoint.

Anyway, why are so many people poppy police these days?

Well he turned his back on the British national anthem pre season a few years back.

The bloke is anti establishment, anti British and I’d go as far as saying a terroist supporter (quoting Bobby Sands on his Instagram post). He hates the queen, yet he’s happy to take the money with her face on it.

He needs to f*ck off and play either in Ireland or for Celtic to end all this ****.

I get his reasons for disliking the British armed forces, but he along with the small minority of knobhead celtic fans need to remember at the end of the day they are British and many of them would have had family members who died in WW1/WW2.

Don’t agree with Matic not wearing one either, FWIW.

I see it as a mark I’d respect for the country you reside in.

If a country in the Middle East had something similar, I’d expect any ‘westerners’ to follow it as well.

It’s all nonsense really. He could have just worn one (with a specialised to WW1/2) then this argument wouldn’t even take place.

I’d just prefer it if we didn’t have them on the shirts. Only became a ‘thing’ about 10 years ago didn’t it?

Do you really not understand why some people from Ireland might not have a great opinion of British armed forces?

Just because he doesn’t respect the queen or the anthem doesn’t mean he hates all British people, even if he does that’s his opinion and I don’t have an issue with it. Each to their own.

It’s got absolutely nothing to do with being PC. It’s about respect.

Respect my ass. My Grandad fought all through WW1 in the Hampshire Regiment and never wore a poppy. My great uncle was killed at Gillipoli with the Royal Marines never got a chance to wear a poppy. Rewind the clock 20 years and see how many TV presenters, footballers and the general public were wearing poppies. Like I said political correctness gone mad.

Precisely. I don't know why people get so wound up by it.

I do think that there have been instances where McClean has gone a bit OTT with his show of disapproval. For example, no on is asking you to sing the national anthem, but you don't have to turn your back on it. But I can totally understand why he wouldn't wear a poppy. No-one should HAVE to wear it.

I personally choose to respect those who died fighting fascism by not doing something just because someone told me to.

If you want to wear one, that's completely fine, but all this faux outrage if someone doesn't wear one is just getting ridiculous.

He is abit stupid really, irrespective of Bloody Sunday, many people died before that, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English etc. Catholic, Muslim all faiths died so he could kick a sack of air about and have his free speech. Should look at the bigger picture. But like everything, it’s his choice and shouldn’t be victimised for this.

Anyway, I’m off to take reassign my gender to lawnmower default setting, see ya.

I don’t have a problem with him not wearing one, although I do think he is a massive hypocrite given that he is happy to live in England etc.

Turning his back on the anthem a few years ago was a step to far; that’s an active gesture of disrespect, when he could quite easily have stood there and done nothing like everyone else.

You've got all these boomers who you'd think fought in the war themselves the way they carry on. You don't need a poppy to pay respect.

Interesting how people misread posts on here, I do the same.

My opening words were 'I respect his decision' and then made the observation that as he hates the British why come here and take the money. Hypocrite IMO

TBF if you really hated a nationality (which is pretty dumb) then surely one of the best things to do is to take all their cash and laugh? He probably loves the bit that gives him a load of money.

I don't really know anything about the guy, so I just googled him and this was the first hit. Seems reasonable to me and quite clearly states he doesn't hate the British. Hope that helps clear it up for you :)

Every year this happens. Surely people know he's not just going to change his view spontaneously? I see all the Stoke fans have turned against him now and Stoke City want to fine him, but they knew his stance when they signed him, so why are they so up in the air about it now?

Something to complain/be offended about, I guess. I wonder what it will be next week.

Don't know if i'm reading that wrong but are you taking his side? Because if you think coming from Derry means he's coming to Britain you're inferring that Derry isn't British, but is instead Irish...

If wearing the poppy becomes mandatory then it will lose its meaning and power.

I may not agree with him, but to each his own.

It is a shame that he feels unable to pay his respects to those that died so he has the freedom to express that view point.

Northern Ireland isn’t part of Britain, so anyone from Derry isn’t British
