Hoedt to Liverpool our on loan might make sense. They need centre back and he would probably be ok alongside VVD.

 

Would be more logical than Caulker.

 

That's 1 of 2 extraordinary things I forgot about that I was reminded about today:

 

1) Caulker joining Liverpool.

2) MK Dons beating Utd 4-0 under LvG.

yeah it's no surprise really.

 

british players are overpriced as hell- Solanke just went for £19m ffs.

It's the very same reason Bayern want Hudson-Odoi and why they're exploring other English players.

The money is there if you scout English players well/coach them into top class players!

Yeah definitely if we want to stay up! RH has done a brilliant job so far but I believe we need a couple of players even just on loan required to make an immediate improvement to the team.

Kelman is ok. Yes he scored from the half way line at the weekend (when SarfEnd were 3-1 down in the 94th minute, so doubt the keeper was paying too much attention) but for the article to say he has excelled in their youth games is a bit off. Yes he scored something like 60 goals last season but the standard of the youth setup at the Shrimpers isn’t great shakes and the level of opposition is low at best. He will do well and is better than The Blues but really would be a (big) gamble for the future.

 

Also it was West Ham and Bournemouth linked last time I saw that report, so looks like some journo just edited out the Cherries and added us for ****s and giggles. Can see the Hammers taking him as they have scouts at most Southend youth matches and at Roots Hall.

Well, in the first half of it there was, as we hadn't made enough money from player sales to buy anyone. But, hopefully, there will be a case for signing someone in the final 2 weeks of it.

 

If we can only spend what we have made from sales so far in the window, the budget is still pretty limited though, so I expect the club will be trying to sell more players to clarify how much will be available to buy one or more.

Mepham would be interesting - the club may be thinking that Bournemouth just blew out on Solanke and the Clyne loan fee/wages so could be an opportunity to pounce before they re-arm in the summer. He's not played that many games but has looked impressive when he has. Some people posting on here that's he can't get in the Brentford side at present, not really true as got injured and the replacements have done well whilst he gets match sharp again. He'd be a gamble at £20m but has the attribute none of our defenders - apart from possibly Yoshida - have; pace.

 

Watkins I've seen a fair bit of when he was at Exeter and I thought he was banker to play in at least the Champ if not higher. He's not been absolutely prolific in striker terms but then prefers to pay just off the main striker and seen him do well out wide and cutting in, as J Rod sometimes did for us at his peak. Exeter would be chuffed if we bought him, IIRC they've got a decent sell on fee.

 

Brentford have got good financial backing and very stable so at least £20m each I would think. That said, even with Benham's resources they are building a new stadium which in West London is never cheap. Can't see us buying both and could be a smokescreen for other targets from the Bundesliga but these players both have the attributes to help us - and them if they succeed and can aim for a top 4 club - and pleased to see the cub linked.

 

SClarke - I know Liverpool took Caulker - but was rumoured that VVD and Hoedt didn't get on, and the former didn't especially rate him. Don't know if true or not. Don't know where Hoedt could be offloaded. Les Reed made some shocking decisions post-2016 but Wesley is on a par with Fraser's second extension. There's nothing about him that screams 'PL ready player you can develop and sell on to top 4'. In fact, he's one of the worst defenders I've ever seen over a sustained period at SFC.

Cardiff close to £18m striker signing.

 

Argentine striker Emiliano Sala is heading to Cardiff City for talks over a potential club-record £18m transfer.

 

Sala, 28, has scored 13 league and cup goals for French top-flight side Nantes this season and is manager Neil Warnock's main target.

 

The move had appeared to have fallen through, but chairman Mehmet Dalman confirmed the club are still keen.

 

"Nothing is dead until it is dead, there is still dialogue going on and we will see what happens," he said.

 

A fee of £18m would beat the £11m Cardiff paid for Chile international midfielder Gary Medel in 2013.

 

Sala's tally of 12 league goals puts him in third place in the French scoring charts behind Paris St Germain's Kylian Mbappe (14) and Lille's Nicolas Pepe (13).

Priority one surely is an attacking player to provide competition with Armstrong and Redmond.

 

I would agree this would be my priority too as things stand, more than a centre back, right back or striker, but with Sims back and some of the more attacking youngsters given their chance recently, I'm slightly more confident than I was a couple of months ago. The worry is one of Redmond or Armstrong getting injured, unless Moi miraculously comes good, which would leave us very light in creative experience. In mid-table that's fine, but not in a relegation battle. 12 months ago we were linked with Promes - exactly the calibre of player we still need a year later.

We aren't the side of the first half the season. We had a lot of good players and a dire manager. Now we have a lot of good players and a very good manager.

 

People are starting to see that the likes of Vesterguard can be great assets. Ralph hasn't just come in and made us better. He's come in and made us better during a really difficult run of injuries and suspensions. He's taking a look at everyone and not afraid to play youngsters.

 

I wouldn't sign an expensive striker in January after Gabbiadini and Carrillo. It's unlikely the right player will be available. Plus, Long does sit his system. Ings, Longs, Gallagher, Obafemi and Austin is fine. It's certainly enough to see who can fit the system and prove themselves and who we move on in the summer.

 

We have more than enough to stay up comfortably as it is. Panicking now just means lower funds for the summer.

 

Agree we're better, but we are one point above the relegation zone. Twist, don't stick.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl says the club are keen to sign a player in the January transfer window despite admitting that the squad is still too large.

 

Steven Davis and Manolo Gabbiadini both recently left but the Austrian is happy to pursue the right player before the market shuts on January 31.

 

"The squad is still a little bit too big for me," Hasenhuttl said. "Sometimes there are 24 players and that makes it not possible to play 11 v 11 because there are three or four guys left out there.

 

"We took a few young players into the squad, which I thought was necessary, because it helps us create a new hierarchy and bring in a few young, hungry players in.

 

"It always helps to put a challenge on the older ones - it's a good mix.

 

"Our eyes are open and the transfer market at the moment is a little bit quiet. There were five or so players changing in the Premier League in January.

 

"We will look for one in this transfer market for sure when and what position you will see and we will tell you."

 

The 51-year-old would not comment as to whether the club have been monitoring Brentford pair Chris Mepham and Ollie Watkins.

 

Southampton play Frank Lampard's Derby on Wednesday in a FA Cup third-round replay after drawing 2-2 in the first match.

 

Hasenhuttl was asked about last week's 'spy gate' where Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa admitted he sent someone to spy on Derby's training.

 

He said this is something he is used to as it is common in Germany but feels if it is unsporting in England then there should be a punishment.

 

He added: "I know this from Germany. In Germany it is a little bit easier because there are a lot of public training sessions - so it is not a problem really to spy on such training sessions.

 

"There are still a few training sessions that are private, that also happens that sometime you pick one out of the boot or behind the pitch.

 

"But it's good that I think in England they are trying to put in a signal that it is unsporting and unfair.

 

"This will not happen in the future again, if the fine is high then you will see that it doesn't make any sense to take this risk.

 

"I know it, I have also had sessions where we have spied on other clubs. But I think if they sent a signal it would be something I agree on."

 

Asked if he ever sent someone in his career when in Germany, he said: "Yes we could because it was open public.

 

"You send the guy there, you see who is training or not, if there a new coach you look at his style at the beginning.

 

"But it is open in public so anyone could do it. I wasn't standing there myself but I was sending spies, if you want, or normal visitors because it is normal in Germany."

That sounds massively complacent to me. Yes, Ralph is at the moment getting more out of the players that we have than the previous manager. But we are still in a perilous position and a couple of decent results doesn't change that.

 

I don't see how you can look at our defenders and forwards now and not think they are a massive downgrade on what we had a couple of years ago. So, where we can, we need to improve the squad sooner rather than later. That is why we are trying to shift on the likes of Gabbi, Davis, Forster and Hoedt, so that we can free up space in the squad for better quality that suits Ralph's game - he has said as much in interviews.

 

We shouldn't be forced into silly panic buys of course but we absolutely should be supporting Ralph by strengthening his options, and we should look to do it now if we can. He won't stick around long if the club don't support him in the good job he is doing so far.

The way i read the situation Ralph would probably be happy to leave new buys until the summer and start pre-season with the squad he wants. That may be better then upsetting the balance he is creating. The squad is aready overloaded. if he identifies the right person I expect he would get him but we dont want a repeat of previous window madness
