Typical of Guardian. Had issues with them before (not football related) over muddled thinking not based on full facts but making incorrect assumptions.

Thought the point was fairly on the money, it is after all an opinion piece rather than a news item.

 

The only bit that I'd have thought anyone could object to was the idea that all the top players we've had in the past 5 years could have all been in the same team when really many of them were brought in to replace those sold, and thus would probably have never joined without us first selling their predecessor (i.e. if we hadn't had lost Lovren we wouldn't have got Alderweireld, if we'd not lost him we'd never had got Van Dijk). The same for Lambert and Pelle, or J Rod and Mane.

 

They certainly wouldn't have all played in the same team, but many of them did - Lallana, Lovren, Clyne, etc. Although it's used to make a point and certainly we have had a very decent team and a very good manager that if we had been able to add one or two of those new signings (i.e. Mane, Van Dijk) without selling nearly as many players then we may well have theoretically been in a similar position to Spurs.

I would also add that they omit the fact we had a reluctant owner.

Difference is they're just sniffing. If they want him, they'll get him. Sad truth for clubs like us and Bournemouth.

Was just about to make this same point, we fully intended to sign Aldeweireld permanently as well as Van Dijk but Atletico stitched us up.

Why would he go (career-wise I mean, not money-wise) ? Chelsea loan out most of their youngsters, what will they do with him...…..

European games, he'd probably have a few medals too if he stayed there for 2-3 years.

 

If nothing else, money is a better reason than most.

If I was a Chelsea fan I would be asking why we are selling Hudson-Odoi and Abraham while looking to buy someone like Wilson..
