On the subject of pubs near the ground, what became of The King Alfred ? Normally park the other side of Northam Bridge but walking from the town end noticed it looked to be locked up and closed.

Been closed for ages now, doubt it will ever reopen.

Real shame, just needs someone with a bit of vision to get it going, bring back the topless barmaids upstairs.

Building the ground in St Mary’s was supposed to help regeneration of a rough part of town but it just seems to have got worse.

Plenty of pubs within a mile of the ground now closed, used to like the Eagle and Royal Oak.

Trouble is, having been in those pubs you mention on a non-match day, they were completely dead. Not even students, let alone locals. People going to pubs now (not on a match day) expect food and non-stabby locals staring at them.

Walking from the centre of town yesterday, remarked on how difficult it is to get a pint in before a game these days. Royal Oak, Eagle, Plume, King Alfred all gone. Kingsland Tavern a desperate place, unable to get the pints out.

It hasn’t go worse though, St Marys used to be far more run down than it is these days. The pubs closing is more to do with the trade in general at the moment. The days of a back street wet led boozers are dying. These pubs that don’t move with the times end up closing. It’s the same everywhere.

Seems to me like Guildhall Square and Ocean Village/Oxford St are the main places to drink now? There’s a new sports bar opening near the Guildhall. If it’s half as good as the branch they have in Bournemouth it was mop up.
