Burnley vs Saints - Build Up

Wrong bloke mate, you're after Heisenberg, he's the resident "cheeky side bet" merchant. Thanks anyway.

No worries. Just giving my view that I do not think Ings is in form as yet, and thought in an amusing way? Clearly not how someone saw it (not that I am bothered). Will be delighted if he scores the winning goal all the same. Too good not be tempted - just put a £50 bet on Ings to score the opener.

got a 1-0 defeat to a 92nd minute Ashley Barnes winner written all over it

Despite some better defending during pre-season, I can't see Saints not conceding, however I reckon we can score a couple of goals, one early in each half (based on what I saw v Koln. Burnley are a better team than Koln). It's going to be a very interesting game. 2-2.

With Boufals father passing away we can rule him out of being involved in the squad.

Go with the 3-5-2

Gunn

Valery

Bednarek

Yoshida

Vestergaard

Bertrand

Romeu

Hojbjerg

JWP

Redmond

Adams

McCarthy

Stephens

Cedric

Armstrong

Djenepo

Ings

Obafemi

Ralph watchers will be pleased to have seen him in today's training pics although he didn't look his normal ebullient self. Looked a bit tentative. Maybe his minor op was a bit more than that. Hope he's OK.

Body language alert...…. from a picture

Perhaps he should have stopped training and posed for the shot

Maybe with the season starting on Saturday he's serious and focussed?

we are notoriously abysmal at opening day fixtures! let hope Ralph can pull a rabbit out his Hasenhutl

We've drawn 4, won 1 and lost 2 (3-2 vs City and 2-1 vs Liverpool, both away) of our opening games since our promotion. Not the best record, but hardly abysmal. Think we'll draw 0-0 or 1-1 again on Saturday

This team for me with Long on the bench for Obafemi. Probably our strongest line up if we have to play 3 at the back. We really are being hamstrung by not having a top centre back though, I’d rather an extra attacker than that third centre back.

As much as this fixture would be a must win later in the season, I have it as an opening day draw, 1-1.

When are the squad numbers being released?

I would imagine on Friday after the transfer window has closed. Only three PL clubs have announced their numbers so far so it looks like clubs are waiting to see exactly who they have before finalising numbers.

One of the main drivers for announcing them early is that fans get on and buy shirts based on the new season’s numbers. That driver doesn’t exist for Saints this year!

Last year the squad numbers were officially confirmed by the Premier League on 4 September. That is when the 25 man squads also were announced. Suspect we will actually announce the main first team squad well before that, at least when the club have shirts to sell.

We don't know that is true.

In a training gallery titled 'The best of the action shots from Wednesday's training session at Staplewood'

Boufal can be seen training...

True although the OS had already announced the first team numbers on 29 June. That hasn’t happened this year yet.

Thing is, on 29 June (last year) the numbers were still subject to change. Of course none did (?), but new ones were added (Ings, Vestergaard, Gunn, Armstrong, Elyounoussi signed in July or August). There were also numbers announced that were subsequently not used (Carrillo, Boufal, Sims, Reed, McQueen) due to transfers/loans out. So the definitive list is formally submitted and confirmed by the PL much later.

Well Armstrong and Elyounoussi were part of the 29 June announcement but yes things could obviously change and the earlier the OS announces the numbers the more that are likely to change. But the same could happen this year. The PL will presumably announce numbers on say Friday or Saturday of this week and over the days or weeks after that we could loan players out or even sell them.

What the PL site will give us is the full set of numbers for Checkatrade Trophy purposes. The OS never announce those.

Will be amazed if Bednarek doesn't start and also do not expect 4222.

Think it'll be 343. Replace Romeu with Bednarek in your team, with JWP alongside Hojbjerg. I know he's not the ideal DM, but with 3 CBs Hojbjerg is the holding player with JWP box-to-box linking play.

Is anyone joining me in looking forward to the new season?

Very few by the looks of it on this forum

Absolutely, although not sure your reading of forum intentions is correct. It seems to me that quite a lot of people on here have more belief than at any time since Koeman left.

The key to it may be how well Adams & Boufal perform, if they can become regular goal scorers we may have a good season ahead.

Fair enough, perhaps the "usual doom and gloom/never happy" set just stand out more

Yep. We're gonna be competitive and I'm more optimistic about Adams after pre season than I was when we signed him. Djenepo has something about him too and I hope Boufal stays and adds some missing flair. Looking forward to it.

Yes indeed, every picture tells a story. Why did you select your Avatar for example? It tells me far more about you than you might imagine despite your cynicism.

One of my best friends is a renowned recruitment specialist and adviser in London and believe me the way you look and behave at interview matters as much as the CV you take with you.

Agree with that having interviewed lots of people in my time....

The avatar was/is a tribute to the man who turned us round..

Do we need a back 3 vs Burnley, they are likely to play two centre forwards, most likely 2 from Wood, Barnes and Jay Rod, none of whom are particularly quick or tricky, they are the kind of battling centre-forwards that Bednerak and Vestergaard are more suited to facing IMO.

Plus they are likely to play two in midfield so having 3 in there for us would allow us to control the game better.

Personally I expect our formations to be over the season 4-3-3, the 3-5-2 and the 4-2-2-2 on a 'horses for courses' nature depending who were are playing.

IIRC it was been mentioned about how hard they are working to be able to play all shapes and transition between them during games.

So on that basis I'd go -

Gunn

Valery, Bednerak, Vestergaard, Bertrand

Romeu

JWP Hojberg

Adams, Ings, Redmond.

Bet you a million pounds I have more friends than you.

Although at recent birthday bash it was so disappointing that none of my Saintsweb buddies turned up.

It's sadder if no-one comes to your funeral. Just make sure that you go to all your friends' funerals when they pass away, or they won't come to yours.

Anybody else find this graphic as annoying as I do?! Why the actual are all the players facing their own goal? If the GK is at the bottom of the picture then surely we should be looking at the back of the players' shirts? As it is displayed it would make much more sense (at least to my spatial awareness) for the GK to be at the top of the graphic and the RB to be at the top left and the LW to be at the bottom right. Is it just me?

We’re getting hit on the counter.

The mid-field combination of PEH and JWP doesn't look right to me. May get away with it against Burnley but better sides will have a mid-field picnic.

It will only work when playing 3 at the back, effectively using the third defender as a defensive midfielder stepping forward to close down while the other two cover.

When (if) playing 4 at the back, I fully expect Romeu to be starting.

Agreed - that's the way I see it. Until RH thinks he can start with 2CB, to avoid losing attacking options we go with one DM plus JWP who falls back in defence and pushes forward in attack, with one CB filling the DM position.

As Danso has played both CB and DM this may be part of the thinking.

First trip to Burnley, anyone got any advice re good places to park? Going up with my boys, so more worried about a quick getaway than being close to pubs. Burnley website suggests a few so may go with the one that’s closest to the motorway.

I'm probably going to park at Burnley Cricket club which is literally next to the ground, last year I parked on Doris Street park which is small but only about 500 meters up the road from the ground. Other options here:
