Thread: January Transfer Window - 2020 Edition

Surely 'priority' would mean as a must have upgrade for the first team, therefore left back is not really a priority as we would basically be buying a back up.

Centre-back upgrade, centre-mid upgrade and attacking mid upgrade for me.

Actually I'd like to buy an upgrade on Bertrand and reduce him to the back up role. He ain't getting any younger and has been rumoured to be trying to get out since Puel's tenure. He hasn't really looked like his heart is in it for a long time.

Along with Cedric, Bertrand is arguably the most saleable commodity our owners have left so they will probably try to sell them both in January. But, whether part of what they receive for them will be enough to buy upgrades is very doubtful. Our fans have consistently bought into the philosphy that new is better though.

We need a dominant centre back so we can comfortably start only playing two of them. We also need to ship out a couple...somehow. I'm not sure how - weren't Villa interested in Stephens a while back?

We need a left back back up, unless McQueen does get fit or Vokins steps up, but as neither seem likely presently, I'd be signing a decent young left back from the lower leagues that could one day step into Bertrand's boots. Who? I don't know, it's been hard following the lower leagues lately on account of having no time!

We need a right back first choice, and to ship out Cedric. Valery is fine as a back up/promising talent.

We need a defensive midfield brick ****house like Wanyama was to break up play. We lack variety in central midfield IMO.

We don't need a GK but Gunn has seemingly regressed this season. Can we afford to stick with McCarthy as first choice?

Attack is fine IMO. We have a goalscoring striker fit which is important and reasonable other options (hoping Adams gets his chance and takes it eventually). Attacking midfield options appear to be decent too. If we can sort out the defence (and defensive midfield) we could stay up this season! We literally have one transfer window to get it right - Gao needs to back us or go away.

We don’t need attacking mid. I’d say that’s the one area we have a small amount of choice although both full backs and a stronger centre back is top priority as is a ball winning, box to box midfielder in the Lemina mould. A leader in the middle of the park where games are lost and won. Sadly, despite Saturday’s good performance, our midfield lack that bite, balling winning tenacity. That ability to charge down and then succeed a strong pass completion rate. We are constantly gifting the opposition possession which has lost us too many games. This also puts pressure on an already sub-standard, confidence lacking centre back pairing which is in a constant state of flux which must exasperate the situation. I’d like to see Danso have a game in his preferred position alongside a new addition. Sadly, I don’t think the platitudes which the club fed to The Independent were truthful in the slightest. It was merely pandering to the fans following a ritual humiliation on live TV but we’ve done that to death.

I’d love to be wrong. The club may have missed their suggested timeframe for appointing a DOF & whilst I know, logically, my head tells me the defensive, high energy transfer suggestions made by the club were likely the last in a long list of brazen lies, a tiny part of me, likely my heart, want to believe we are waiting to announce all 3 senior appointments: Matt Crocker as Academy/DOF, Walsh as Recruitment Expert & Buvac as Assistant Manager (which Ralph is desperately crying out for, that support to take the undoubtedly huge amount of pressure he is enduring off his shoulders a little). Then we may recruit in January under their guidance and suggestion which may be already happening. That would be a hugely successful and massive coup/reshuffle but what a positive one. Obviously, we have more chance of a fattened pig (or Danish Center back) flying!

Can’t link or think of any players because it feels too much of a pipe dream at this stage. We firstly need coaches and an assistant and DOF to guide this leaking ship wreck to port.

I believe we were very close to bringing in a Croatian central midfielder currently playing in Portugal during the summer but as Leminas move didn't happen in time we couldn't get it done before the window shut. A good CDM is equally as important as a proper centre half.

I think we need a keeper. Someone experienced and steady while Gunn develops, if he will.

Gunn would have been fine as back up when Forster was good. But McCarthy is poor. Not so much errors as just generally concedes slightly soft goals. I don't think it helps our defence one bit.

Wish we could get someone like Romero who never plays but is decent. But guessing we're too broke to get anyone good while McCarthy and Gunn are here.

    That would be McCarthy then

Southampton are still also intending to appoint a specialist in player trading, although Ralph Hasenhuttl will be limited in his January budget and will largely need to turn Southamptonís season around with his existing squad.

Saw him at the start of this season at Elland Rd v Swansea- and he was clearly prem material- seemed to have so much time on the ball as all top players do!

They bought Tyrone Mings instead and he's the best central defender ever to come out of the Southampton Academy. The total fee will come to £25million so he was out of our price range.

    Suggested Mings in the summer.

MLG said he wasn’t good enough.

Also suggested Cahill, again, MLG said he wasn’t good enough...

Buy a fullback that can play left and right back comfortably, but mainly a right back and bin off Cedric for any about of money.

Just read another of the club’s DOF articles but noticed they have slipped in a bombshell while fans ride high on the feel good sentiment of Crocker’s appointment.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...ker-asnew/amp/

Anyone who swallows the faÁade that the poor and unsuspecting Gao does not know everything that is going on with his investment is short sighted.

I’m really pleased with Crocker - please don’t misunderstand me - but this latest article and the timing is very calculated. Make a u-turn on the transfer window on the same day - in the same article - of this announcement. That is very deliberate and consistent of this regime’s behaviour & undoes all my previous optimism and the brief feeling of goodwill. It has really struck a sour chord with me. Like Ralph, I suspect Crocker will be expected to perform miracles with little to no new resources.

If this is true, he will end up burnt out and demoralised if Ralph is anything to go by. Chewed up & spat out or wise enough to move to pastures greener. Too much pressure can kill a once decent talent. Talent needs to be nurtured.

I expect we may see the usual Chinese investment structure. Absolutely minimal (nominal) investment, a flurry of lies and half truths and the expectation of a maximum return & the accompanying massive pressure. How does this model ever succeed?

In this case, it appears evident they are going for coaches and the long term feeder farm approach rather than improving a poor and woefully thin in depth and totally demoralised squad and they are ignoring the wider picture that even Klopp, Pep and Bielsa couldn’t make work: a lack lustre & bare bones team of inadequate players (our attacking squad aside, they are decent) can’t become world beaters overnight. I would love to be wrong.

One decent performance and one point (2 points dropped) does not make a season but I appreciated the drive of encouragement Saturday. I don’t appreciate the way the club have twisted it to their agenda today.

I quote the Telegraph article which slipped past my radar but we do have to earn a living (well noticed SuperSaint)

“ Southampton are still also intending to appoint a specialist in player trading, although Ralph Hasenhuttl will be limited in his January budget and will largely need to turn Southampton’s season around with his existing squad.

Despite an encouraging draw at Arsenal on Saturday, Southampton have yet to win at home in the Premier League this season and are currently second from bottom of the table ahead now of a sequence of fixtures against other struggling teams”.

Define how Ralph will be “limited” and say what you really mean? No funds are available. After all, the word of the club and the trust from many fans (non forum) is pretty much non-existent.

This reaction will certainly help boost the home team track record. Keep plugging away with the same squad of players who nearly got relegated twice under two different managers, now on their third manager. I think that directly proves the players aren’t up for it. They are not good enough. What frustrates me SOOOOO MUCH is 2/3 key players can make all the difference. If we can indeed attract anyone but if I have learnt anything in life, money talks.

It is late and I’m tired and ground down and pessimistic in reaction to this one paragraph about January and I hope this is a massive overreaction. But I know how these c**** operate and this is exactly what I was expecting despite my naively optimistic post wanting to believe the better side of it earlier.

If we don’t recruit in January (and it looks like they’re lining up a little or no action window YET AGAIN, I will go with the latter but they may gauge fan reaction), then I think that says it all. The only small satisfaction I will get from that is that Gao and Kat will lose substantial sums against their investment but I also fear that they are both so scrupulously tight, they will hold onto the club until they can recoup their money which could create a Lowe mark 2 situation. Sorry to be glum. I really hope the club would have taken the initiative. Now it seems it was just a wise appointment disguising an underlying deceit and they’re carrying on business as normal in the background. Baseless rumours & zero investment. So short sighted.

The next 5 or 6 games will map out our future. Watford and Norwich at home. Chasing our first home win. Newcastle away. West Ham at home. Villa and Chelsea away. Our future will be decided before the new year, in late Dec.

Incidentally, Crocker joins some weeks after in January. The club have made the usual hints and rumours about coaches but it’s looking likely this is just calculated fanfare to prevent protests and fans losing interest.

Please bring in a strong assistant manager at the very least Gao. Don’t be a complete twunt. Learn by your continual bloody mistakes. FFS. What is it with this club continually walking towards a cliff edge? It’s like they have a deathwish.

Talk about build you up and knock you down.
I won’t expect any incoming players in January reading the subtext. On our day, we can beat all of the lower teams we are due to face now & throughout Dec but I just don’t trust these Southampton players. Their confidence is shot & they are so erratic. I expected a win against Everton. Everton can’t beat anyone. I’ve said it before, Silva will be gone by Xmas. Let’s hope Southampton’s premier league status doesn’t follow suit.

    #GaoOut #SaveOurSaints

(sorry for posting so much) Please don’t peddle the newspaper rumour thing because it is Jeremy Wilson and the club have a direct line to him. He’s the first choice journalist for Saints and the club mouth piece for any serious articles they want to get out.

Re-reading the angry article, it is very pessimistic but I don’t think it is 1,000,000 miles from the truth. Make of that what you will. It’s just a culmination of depleted patience and a lifelong Saints fan aiming all his frustrations at the seemingly calculating & deceitful owner(s). I can’t stand liars. They’re playing god with the hopes and dreams of so many honest and hard-working families. The twunts.

Still one of our best players, yes long term he needs replacing, but for this season spending money on upgrading one of your strongest positions seems wasteful and hence not a priority.

We do because we need a creative playmaker in the Tadic mould, all our attacking mids currently are very samey and have a similar style, they run at people, they are not so good at through balls, clever passes etc. that unlock defences.

If we want to back Ralph and his style, then that means an attacking playmaker in the style of someone like Tadic or Forsberg or David Silva etc.

Except it hasn't been our strongest position has it? A lot of our problems this season have been becuase we haven't had an actual LB available on matchdays resulting in an unbalanced matchday 11.

Bertrand through injury, suspension and some sort of falling out with Ralph hasn't been available for lots of games this season. We need a second left back in the squad to stop more games where midfielders and right backs try to fill in this season. Given that, rather than go cheap with a back up, let's just get a LB who could walk straight into the team.

Do that and you'll be in the exact same situation because Bertrand will want to leave because he is not playing. Only clubs playing in like the Champions league can realistically have two quality options for each position. We can neither afford the wages or the transfers fees to buy an upgrade on Bertrand when he is probably one of our highest earners, it would just be madness, especially when other areas of the squad need far more attention.

I'd rather have a stronger first 11 than a deeper squad, a back up to Bertrand is not going to keep us up, new centre-back and midfielders more likely is.

He has been trying to leave for three years part of the reason we should have replaced him already. We don't have to let him go in Jan anyway. But trying to get through the rest of the season with one LB is mad it has already cost us points this season.

I disagree. The reality is that players in Jan go for vastly inflated fees. Then there's the fact teams don't want to sell their better players in Jan. So its far more likely you'll end up buying the sort of dross we currently have plenty of or even worse another Carrillo.

Well that's the fault of the club (again) for not investing properly in the summer. We have to look for proper reinforcements in January because we have little choice unless we are simply accepting relegation.

I don’t see how signing Carrillo did anything but hinder our progress season after season.
Equally I don’t see not overpaying for Adams in Jan meant we accepted relegation.
Looking across all last january’s Prem Signing the Only the good ones were 2 loans & one of those was outrageously expensive

Player I’ve had my eye on for a while is playing tonight on Sky... Romaine Sawyers would be a perfect fit for us along side someone like Romeu.

Wasn’t sure if he would be able to make the step up, but from this season it’s clear he is. Unfortunately feels like we’ve missed the boat on that one though.

Equally I donít see not overpaying for Adams in Jan meant we accepted relegation.
Looking across all last januaryís Prem Signing the Only the good ones were 2 loans & one of those was outrageously expensive
No but just because we made cr*p buys in past January windows is not an excuse for not spending anything now. Ideally we should have strengthened in the summer but given that is no longer an option, I'd rather buy a decent cb in January than simply roll over and die.

How is it clear he is ready for the step up from playing in the best team in the CHAMPIONSHIP?
Players are brought up from there and don't make it but you will never know till they are given the chance

How many does Jarrod Bowen need to score before we make the move?

Is your sad little life that boring that you just try to start an argument over anything on an Internet forum

But itís clear because he is significantly better than ANY CM we have. Good on the ball, good going forwards, not too bad defensively either. A proper box to box player which we donít have, and need.

Bowen will go and thrive at a Bournemouth or Palace soon if we don't make a move. Quality player far too good for that league.

He moves on if you fully ignore him. He uses the "lamesaint" username too occasionally.

My advice just ignore both of his trolling accounts.

on Romaine Sawyers he will go up with WBA this season. He wouldn't swap for us now

Yeah, Sawyers is a West Brom lad and working well with a good manager in Bilic. Didn't realise he was 28 though, thought he was younger than that.
