Arsenal 2-2 Saints - Reaction

Chaps, I apologise, but that result was all my fault. I had deliberately ignored all of this afternoon's football, having no desire to watch any more of the drivel we have so often been served up this season, and by 5 to 5 I determined that full time must have occurred, so I turned on Final Score, only to hear the comment that we were in the 5th minute of 7 added, and leading 2-1. Not wanting to jinx the result I quickly turned over, but I had inadvertently buggered things up, and 5 minutes later when I switched back, the Arse had found their Fergie-time equaliser..

God there are some ****in donuts on here, we were poor finishing away from a great away result against Arsenal. Granted i didn’t want Stephens, Cedric, JWP and obefemi anywhere near the starting line up but **** me at least they tried today.

Persistent poor finishing is usually one of the most reliable predictors of relegated sides.

Arsenal had thrown the towel in and we still couldn’t capitalize. Shocking. Not happy with the point at small because wec****ed away 2.

Anyone who thinks we won’t do the “good performance one week and then fail to turn up in a must win game the next” is deluded.

or play for a move to a London club, the disadvantage of our club being based in a ****hole

As gutted as I am that we failed to get the 3 points that our performance deserved today, it is encouraging that we were so much more on the front foot today and created so many chances to score.

If we are going to get out of trouble this season (which I still believe is possible by the way), we have to keep playing in that positive way, as it's pointless playing defensively with our lack of quality at the back.

Next week is obviously critical for us.

Thoughts overall I think we were the better team and should of been more clinical. Arsenal were there for the taking!

Spirited performance however we failed to capitalize on chances which in the end cost us the points.

That Mattéo Guendouzi is a good player exactly the type of player we need. Great vision, passing ability and not afraid to run with the ball. Wasn't he signed from French lower league?

Lorient, and he was on our radar when he was 16/17.

My point is the many on here saying today wasn’t good enough, today was actually a decent performance

The finishing wasn’t good enough. No point playing well if we can’t bury easy chances. That “pass” by Cedric was shocking from a pro, Hoj’s decision making poor. 1 maybe 2 sitters missed by Djenepo. Game in game out this equals relegation.

game in game out defending and protecting leads hasn’t been good enough, our problems this season have nothing to do with finishing unfortunately

Would have taken that all day long pregame, but bitter blow at the end. Manager spot on today, and we played some decent stuff. Far far better shape. But miss those chances and this league will kill you.

Interesting that most Arsenal fans I spoke to, which admittedly was only a dozen or so, think we are going down.

Jesus, look at the state of our goal difference compared to our relegation rivals!

Effectively, that point could be decisive...

That was always the issue when we took the thrashing, in our position it was effectively four points dropped.

That was an excellent effort all round. We played up high, rather than sitting deep. We showed initiative and pace going forward--with some impressive breakaways. The team was much better set up today. Only major drawback was failing to score from several sitters. We should have won that by at least a couple of goals.

Time to FO Hasenhuttl
Said by someone who clearly didn't see the game. Not winning was down to Djenepo missing two clear chances, a Boufal shot going just wide and two simple crosses that were overhit.

This was a good Saints display, in attack excellent but admittedly with mistakes in defence. It should be a confidence-booster for the coming "easier" games and hopefully real Saints fans can really get behind the team now.

And Ralph was not responsible for any of those misses, so now really isn't the time to be on his back. Maybe his decision to bring on Boufal rather than shoring things up with Yoshida or Romeu could be questioned, but if Boufal had scored Ralph would be hailed as a genius. And the usual whingers on here would have moaned at a defensive move. Of course, because their only objective is to moan and undermine the team and club.

It was a great performance today marred by two defensive lapses and missed chances. Against Arsenal, away, we were by far the better team. Be positive for once.

Negative reaction on here is bizarre. Like most fans actually at the game I really enjoyed that performance which was the most assertive if the season. Usually it’s been poor defending that has cost us, but today it was not being able to finish. 21 shots away at Arsenal says it all. If we play like this on the front foot and create loads of chances we will be fine.

Big performances today from Bednarek, Bertrand, JWP, Armstrong, Ings and Obafemi. Really encouraging.

Have been saying on here for some time that we will really only know where we stand when we have played everyone once. We now have a run of games against bottom half teams. No need to hit panic button until we have played everyone once.

Weren't the M City performances something to build on?

not really. We stuck 10 men behind the ball and did **** all other than defend. We showed absolutely nothing with the ball. As Strachan used to say, you have to be brave on the ball and we weren't. The only thing that made the performance respectable was that it was against a top side. Against almost everyone else it would have been two woeful displays.

Todays game wasn't that. Yes Arsenal are no where near the level of City, but they are still half decent (all be it struggling a bit) and we wiped the floor with them. Their fans booed them off the park, that how much we showed the up. I am not saying this is a turning point, because it still feels a long way from that (play well and still don't win is a recipe relegation), but this WAS something to build on. We have to play like that i every game and hopefully be clinical.

Just back and whilst the equaliser was sickening, the point was the least Saints deserved.

Our club is broken at the moment. The fans struggled to raise any enthusiasm, a defeat was expected. The warm up was decidedly average (no decent coaches starting to tell). The players looked a bit nervous and lacklustre, to be expected I guess.

However a much better performance all round, and should give a much needed confidence boost for the upcoming vital matches.

We all know this team isn't very good. Reasonable up front but weak elsewhere. However collectively as a team they can play well and it showed today. Just need more of that against Watford, West Ham, and Norwich.

Stephens played well and is showing leadership, 4 at the back was an improvement, JWP was better in a central role, and Bertrand looked committed. Boufel was fab he needs longer on the pitch.

The negative for me was Holberg. Huge commitment , love that, big team player, but he seems to have become a weak part of the midfield. The ball seems to move away from him at the moment. He has played better so maybe this is a symptom of the missing coaches.

Its early days and a few wins will do wonders. I will actually watch MOTD tonight.

Disappointed we conceded late....again, but it was a hugely improved performance. Hopefully RH persists with 4 at the back now we have both first choice full backs fit again. Still optimistic that we can pull ourselves out of this mess if we have the same application going forward. League is still relatively compact outside the top 4. Had we won, we were only 7 points off 6th!!! Yes thats alot of points but a couple of good results and we can move up the table.

Next game is massive. Not only because its a bottom two 6 pointer, but we desperately need a home win. The longer the record goes, the more difficult that first win becomes.

Definitely a confidence thing for Hoj and who hes playing with. Came on for Denmark during the week, was breaking the play up and looked very composed on the ball

Cruel last gasp goal leaves a horrible feeling; but there was much to be encouraged about. Well done Ralph for playing two specialist full-backs. Well done for playing four at the back and well done for playing four attacking players - we might argue about which three join Ings but the template of four attacking players and four at the back with specialist FBs is a must for most games to come. Against a meek, inept and open Arsenal we got away with a two man midfield, but that combination is going to be found out in the crucial games to come - it's clear though that Ralph is going to play Ward-Prowse every week. Some have criticised Hojbjerg, yet I thought he was outstanding, along with Bertrand, Bednarek and Ings. If only Cedric had completed that simple assist for Obafemi; if only Djenepo had finished that delightful set up from Boufal.

That is good to hear maybe it is just confidence and some decent support alongside him.

Hope so we need that PEH

Hoj was very poor today, albeit he had a slightly better second half. Consistently slowed play down and was cumbersome on the ball.

As for the two fullbacks, they were decent going forward (Bertrand especially); but were a liability from crosses. Arsenal’s goals and best chances came from crosses and us leaving the backpost unmarked. I don’t know if Cedric or Bertrand were instructed to come inside or towards the ball; but they repeatedly lost track of what was happening behind them. Maybe that’s a symptom or hangover from playing 3 CBs for so long. Who knows. But it cost us today.

Arsenal fans are gutted that we couldn't win today. They wanted Emery gone. I think every other team in the Premier League would have put Arsenal out of their misery and won there today. Norwich will do the job we couldn't in their next league game.

They were unbelievably poor weren't they? At least it cleared up the question of who the next Manager to be sacked will be.

They were barely going through the motions. They have written off this season already. Their players and fans just want Emery gone.

We were probably the only team in the league that wouldn't have beaten them today.

We will agree to disagree about Hojbjerg's performance. Some have named JWP in the best players today? BBC made Hoj man-of-the match - not that I take that as an expert view - but he clearly wasn't poor, and he was playing both a holding role and driving forward with the ball.

I can share that blame. Woke up early enough in NZ to check the progress - I try to never do that for the obvious reason. 89 minutes, leading 2-1. It just felt inevitable.

Good to see four at the back. the 7 minutes stoppage time and the late equaliser both entirely as expected, so no surprise. Always happens at Arsenal, only difference this time there was no actual gbh and none of our players left the pitch with a broken jaw from a punch 'missed' by the referee. Did the usual thing of raising our game for a tough one, even so managed to miss two absolute cast iron sitters to close the game down and repeatedly give them chances from slack defending which was always going to cost us in the end. Will be back to type for the next two home games with the perma-selected JWP slowing things down as we slowly trudge around unsuccessfully trying to pass through Watford and Norwich. 4 at the back again and Boufal in for the slug and we might win them both - going to need to score two or three as defence is toilet. Hopefully stick with Obafemi and Ings and hope neither of them breaks.

Didn't get to watch the game as I was working. My son gave away the disappointment by texting me 'Classic Saints'...so I knew it was another last minute concession of a goal...but I was reasonably happy that we still got a draw and it wasn't another loss. Happier still we played well and should have won by all accounts.

Would much rather that than have been hammered - and let's face it - even with Arsenal mis-firing that could easily have been the outcome.

So kudos where it's due...let's stay positive - and bring that same game attitude and performance to the next game - but this time finally win a game at home!

The match thread and much of this thread are hilarious. Each one of our players is rubbish and our manager needs to FO. The MOM according to the BBC is complete gash and we are already relegated.... yet we out played Arsenal away from home.

It is almost like reading Pompey On Line.

Proud of that performance. Of course we should have won but that performance was light years ahead of anything we have seen this season.

We can't miss chances like we did - Cedric is f***** terrible. That equalizer was on him. As ever he's too busy watching the player with the ball as opposed to his positioning and defending. Sooner he f*** off the better, preening little p****

Twit! One poor pass and he gets pilloried by brain dead cretins whist Djenepo misses two open goal sitters but gets barely a mention.
