Saints 2 Watford 1 - Post Match

Would like to see a replay of when Prowse's free kick hit the defender in the face. Looked like it came off his arm? Thought Bednarek appealed for that.

Also whoever bought Djenepo down outside of the box for that free kick....how he didn't get a card for that is ridiculous.

Never a handball by Djenepo by the way, they always go on about rebounds and it being too quick for players to react etc, it bounced off his shin onto his hand 0.2 seconds later you can't give that. Certainly wouldn't give a penalty for it!

Rules have changed this season though. Any handball in an attacking move, no matter how minor or accidental, instantly rules out any resulting goal. Or should do anyway.

But f*ck it. After Doucoure literally punching the ball into the net to equalise a couple of seasons ago, and the travesty of Austin's disallowed goal last season, we deserve a bit of luck like that.

Well done Saints today for keeping going. This could be a massive 3 points but still obviously a long way to go. Boufal very impressive when he came on. Time for him to start now.

He was starting during our half decent spell a couple of months ago. Then Ralph inexplicably (IMO) relegated him to the bench. But, yep, must be a starter from here on in (kitchen incidents allowing)

Sexist and wrong

The laws of the game now are any handball in the build up to a goal is not allowed deliberate or not.

Not sexist at all, an accurate description of who I was talking about.

And I don't care what the rule says, that rule is bull**** and should be reversed. 45d7c1226bdf5a8450bd5208a0d903ee.jpg

We actually won a game at home and if we win against Norwich we could even be out of the relegation zone. I only saw the second half. Thought we were abysmal until Djenepo / Ings bit of magic. Am very happy we got three points - that is all that matters at this point - about time we played badly and got some points.

Still can't believe how bad we are going backwards though. Watford have zero shots in the second half, then get four corners in extra time or whatever it was. Real lack of composure. And Long on before Che Adams - seriously? Hasenhutl must now realise Adams is a better option...get him scoring and we might just get ourselves out of this mess.

Ironically, JWPs free kick vs Everton was better but Pickford saved it.

I was begging him to somehow score while he was lining it up. Went ballistic. Good feeling after such a poor performance. Then it hit me, “oh god, how long is left?”.

Saints should come with a health warning.

Well done on finally getting a win. But let's not forget the abysmal performance before Djenepo and Ings got us back in it. JWP will get plaudits for the goal, rightly, but his performance apart from that was truly horrible. Hojbjerg too, unbelievably bad. Until Djenepo's magic it was difficult to see why he was on the pitch, looked so out of his depth. Obafemi, Cedric truly awful. But that will all be forgotten because we won. Hopefully the confidence will help these players be better next time.

You do realise that the “informal derogatory” part means that picture doesn’t help your case in the slightest, right?

Strange that Watford didn't bring Deeney on. He could have mullered us. But screw em.

Yup. Most odd. Losing to us will probably be as catalytic as us drawing with Arsenal for their manager. Ho hum. I had to go for a walk round the block without my phone for the last five minutes so you’ve all got me to thank for the win...

SOUTHAMPTON 2-1 WATFORD

Sky Sports' Andy Hinchcliffe...

"When you're in relegation danger it's not about performances, it's about results. It's possibly the most important three points Southampton are going to pick up this season."

Well were relegated then ,because were still in the bottom 3......these pundits come out and spout sound bites that mean absolutly jack ...when will they learn to think?.

Have to say Hinchcliffe should hang his head in shame after that. Needs to take a long hard look at himself.

Still think JWP is a good footballer. Not top 6 quality but a solid mid level prem level who gives it alot. I think he is naturally cautious and not helped when, if he gives the ball away moving it forward, means that there is probably only him and **** defence between the opposition and the goal. Ideally I would like to see him push further forward which forces him to be adventurous and was when he had his best spell of form for us early this year. He can cleanly strike a football like no other in our side and we just need to force him into that attacking mindset. If there are enough players behind him then I think he will.

To all those who booed JWP and started the Romeu chant when he passed it out of play.....dont yous look f***in stupid. Yes he was poor but he offers that set piece quality. Was hard to watch at times but the first win at home is all that counts. Get in lads
Lucky that free kick came off all his other set pieces where ****ing awful, during the game, but that one redeems him as the "dead ball specialist" for a few more games.

The piece that people miss about JWP is how often he helps win back the ball. In that central role today I counted at least 5 times when his aggression, and reading of the game, helped pressure Watford into mistakes. He's def not a flashy player in the general run of play, but he's a combination of honest work-horse coupled with occasional game-winning touches of magic from set pieces. I think he's really important player for us. Armstrong is similar. We really missed him today.

If they can sort the confidence thing, and reduce the number of mistakes, there's signs of a really strong team building here. Boufal and Djenepo are game-changers. Rate them both above Redmond based on recent form. Really good to see the back four starting to come together, though I'd have Valery over Cedric.

Ings form is great bonus compared to how many of us were imagining this season would play out.

I think we'll finish mid-table.

I agree. JWP put everything into the game today. I'm hoping Armstrong will be back soon because in combination they're better.

But the result was everything tonight

Good result. Two goals. **** the handball, I saw the punched goal two seasons ago and the disallowed goal last season that didn't go within a yard of Yoshida as he went backwards away from the ball. **** them.

Now to the nitty gritty. Bertrand, mostly ok but caught ball watching again and missed the mark dropping off, needs to turn square so he can see ball and opponent. Cedric was poor and got us into too much trouble, Valery next game for me. Bednarek okayish, Somebody needs to lock them in a room and ream them out especially Stephens. They are defenders first and foremost they are not ****ing ball players. I lost count of the short passes cut out by the pressuring opposition that also includes JWP and PEH. FFS under presure put your boot through it into the corners and let our forwards chase it down. If it goes out of play,so what, no danger there. All sorts of problems playing square and backwards and bringing an uncomfortable keeper into it under pressure.

We have enough quick forwards, as soon as we have the ball get it forward to them, cut out the backwards and sideways, we're not Man City we're Southampton so recognise the limitations and get the ball into areas where we can hurt the opposition. If we can't pass it forward, miss out the midfield and put the opposition under pressure.

Horrifically bad for 60 minutes. Only JWP Stephens and Ings seemed remotely interested but average at best.

Daft team selection with no midfield ridiculous. Defence and what passed for a midfield constantly had to pass back as there was no outlet. Who plays with 4 strikers for goodness sake.

Bring on talent and you win games. Boufel and a bit of effort from Long changed the game. Stretched the game and gave JWP, and PEH some space and an outlet at last.

Boufel was on fire and I love to see players try stuff like that.

The state we are in I don't care how ugly we win.... just win. In the end two good goals. Saints probably just about edged it, but I don't think anyone is fooling themselves about any sort of dramatic improvement.

However confidence is important so onward and hopefully upward.

Hypothetically, if we beat Norwich we'll be looking at the Arsenal injury time equaliser as a missed chance to win three in a row for the first time since the tail end of the last Koeman season!

Unless we spank Newcastle at theirs, of course. Then West Ham. Then Villa. Last time we won 5 Premier League games in a row? Anyone? Early 2001 under Hoddle with a run of clean sheets.

Ok maybe I'm getting ahead of myself - but we do have 4 potentially winnable games coming up... if we can get the personnel and performance levels right. I'll take awful 2-1 wins against them all.

Too many passengers in the game again, which again is a stark contrast compared to last week against a bigger and better team and everyone gave their all.

The worst offenders being Mr. Captain (Give it to Ings ffs), Cedric "I'm off in the summer anyway" and Redmond. The last one might be a bit harsh, but I think we were just grateful to have a player who ran with the ball last season. Tonight he just kept passing it back to the defence when on the ball. Djenepo and Boufal are examples of the level of winger we should be aiming for and they're a clear level above Redmond.

This doesn't help the players who put in a shift, but ultimately lack the quality as they're having to do the jobs of two players. I also think Obafemi is a bit of a headless chicken up top. Tonight was his chance to shine against a weak defence, who are also quite slow, but he did nothing.

But, hey, we got a big three points, so can't complain too much. I just don't think we can afford to be as complacent against Norwich in midweek, as they're a team of workers who are also quite clinical when given the chance.

"Blonde bint" is a degoratory description and is sexist. If you think it isn't it says more about you than me!

Whether it's derogatory or not is none of your business. We are not having politically correct thought police on here. If you want to exist on here then live and let live. If you don't like it and it upsets you do the logical thing and frequent a more correct forum. It's none of my business either, I saw it and ignored it which is what any grown up would have done.

Just have to play Boufal from the start every game. Him and Djenepo will cause most teams problems.

First home win since April. I'd pretty much forgotten what that feels like. Fair play to them for turning that around after what was a pretty horrible first hour.

Just back, christ we were awful first half again. Punting it up to Obafemi all half was not going to pay off at all.

Some hairy moments with Bednarek/Stephens/JWP giving the ball away. Boufal coming on for Redmond changed the game, personally think Redmond should be dropped to the bench as he was awful.

Less said about Cedric the better, another horrific performance and wouldn’t play him again unless absolutely necessary as he wants to p*ss off at the end of the season.

A win is a win and (hopefully) will give us a big boost going into these run of games with hopefully a weight lifted off the shoulders.

Shout out to the Itchen North today as I thought second half support even at 1-0 down was brilliant - apart from the fans fighting among themselves (unless they were Watford fans in our end?)

I was stood with those cretins fighting and no they weren't Watford fans. After we scored our second some tw*ts were jumping on fans below them and pushing fans down rows of chairs. Some 15 year old kid with a mullet got angry with one of the people doing the pushing and some older woman he seemed to know who looked like a caveman started squaring up to people. It culminated in some old bloke squaring up to the 15 year old and telling him he would meet him outside and then another bloke they were with getting carted out by the stewards after trying to continue the fighting. The thick woman left shortly after.

The BBC match report includes the following;

"The hosts appeared set for a damaging defeat until Ings bundled home Sofiane Boufal's cross with 12 minutes remaining."

"Ings eventually restored parity after fine work by Boufal on the right as he worked his way into the box with some excellent footwork"

It's a shame Djenepo wasn't playing.

People seem to have watched a better and different JWP than I did. The one trick pony’s one trick came off and he scored which I guess is why he gets picked. The number of sideways and backwards passes, the way he slows play down, I thought he was bloody dreadful, as was PEH and Stephens....oh and Cedric
