Newcastle 2-1 Saints reactions

Gobsmacked that Ings was taken off when we needed an equaliser. I'm starting to doubt Ralph's ability tbh with these bizarre decisions.
Ings had a tight hamstring at the end of the Norwich game. He's critical to us so made sense to protect him.

Played well, yet grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.

Until we have a good enough defence this will just continue happening. Immensely frustrating as once we went ahead I thought at least we wouldn't lose.

Going forward we have enough, but we just cannot defend. The only clean sheets we've kept have been against 10 men. We're always going to have to score two.

Invest in a RB and a CB and we will see results. Simple as that for me. No knee-jerk reaction, positives are there but won't happen til the glaring holes are fixed.

Being harsh we can't score either, or maybe that should be we are relying on 2 players to find the back of the net, one every week (its seems) and the other every 2 or 3 games (Ings and JWP) That ain't good enough in reality. When PEH or Cedric shape up to hit a ball 90% of your brain is expecting it to see the ball whistle into the crowd behind the goal. Long you think must have done a personal deal with the devil on something as some of what he has missed has been harder than actually scoring. As for Redmond when he broke away and ended up one on one with the keeper, that pretty much summed up his inability, the Toon keeper was committed, on floor and miles off his line, yet instead of going round him or deftly dinking it over him he passed the ball straight at him!

The Danny Ings thread is covering most of this, but right now if he gets crocked even we spend £100m on a CB and RB - until a few more step up to the plate and score goals we will be in a spot of bother.

Like they say defend from the front, if we look inert on the goalscoring front the oppos are going to be more confident to push up on us.

Agree with the defence (Who couldnt?) all the time we have to score at least 2 goals to get a result we will struggle.

I disagree we have enough going forward - once again we missed chances to win the game (even allowing for our **** defence). If, and it is all if and buts etc , we had taken our chances against Arsenal and Newcastle (and there are many other games I could mention) we may have been sitting midtabe on 20 points.

The fact is out attatck are not good enough to make up for our poor defence and both need fixing.

Now the hurt has gone and I'm back to the controlled, composed and rational person that I normally am, I'm still highly ****ed off, the sign of a good team apparently is playing poorly and getting something. We are doing to opposite. Things need to change quickly.

Agreed. I’m sick of hearing “would have taken a point before the game”...

and

“We played well but it’s never been a happy hunting ground”...

And then see a fellow struggler doing what we couldn’t (Brighton vs Arsenal, Norwich vs Man C etc etc).

When was the last time we comprehensively beat a team in the EPL and didn’t have the usual arse puckering last 10-15 minutes?

Was it Everton 4-1 about 3 years ago? I’m struggling to remember.

Yes. We haven’t played a good 90 minutes for about three years so it probably is.

Oh for a convincing 3-0. We used to be 3-1 specialists but I cannot remember us winning 3-0 for a long long time.

EDIT: Checked the 11 vs 11 site and it was Jan 22 2017 3-0 vs Leicester. We also had a 4-0 at Sunderland on 11th February 2017.

Looking back we had 3-1 wins vs Huddersfield and Wolves last season but I recall that in both games we were made to sweat a bit, so neither were that comfortable.

Another thing that struck me about yesterday was just how weak we are at the goalkeeping position. Alex is a decent enough keeper but Debravka made several key stops (2 on Redmond, 1 on Cedric) and then Alex goes and parries it out on a plate for their winner. Both need to practice putting the ball around the post for a corner. Then at least we can reorganise a bit.

Even a comfortable 2-0, the only one I can think of was Fulham at home last year. We've had a couple of '1-0, backs to the wall and hit them on the counter in injury time' games, like Palace last year and Brighton this but comfortable wins for us are like hens teeth.

It was so predictable that as soon as Carroll was introduced we would crumble. It happened the first year back when Fonte pulled his ponytail and continues to happen every year. He is always going to win the first header, so make sure you win the second ball.

You could say that is encouraging that we create chances, but when this happens on a regular basis then it becomes worrying and a habit. The next two games are massive, but we need to drop Cedric ASAP.

Unlikely. Apparently "he must be decent because he gets picked" and "he once set up a goal for Pelle".

Why is each loss met with "we're down" or "that's why we're going down"?? People know that teams finishing 15th/16th/17th lose loads of games right??!!!\

Annoying result, but there we go. Going to happen when keeper and defence are so poor, and we can't score 2 every game. Just got to try and improve in january and scrape towards 40 points however we can. Ings gives us an advantage many don't have.

out of interest how many players do you think we will need to improve us ? How much do you think those players will cost and do you think the club can afford it ?

And don't give away stupid free kicks. Even on the half way line. We gave loads away.

Yes, its upsetting, worrying and not what I expected this season but in the last four matches we have shown consistent improvement, especially against N'castle even if we did lose, and that is a good sign for second half of the season which I am expecting to enjoy

It's probably because once again we are languishing in the relegation zone again at xmas. It may also have something to do with our total inability to take points from good positions in games. It could be that many of us know that if Danny Ings gets injured we are in some serious shyte. Scraping to 40 points (no way we're getting that many) may be your idea of a successful season, but I was hoping for something a little better this season. Perennial relegation fodder is not good fun.

A dubious claim as you are one of the knockers who always single him out for abuse however well or badly he plays. What's your agenda against him when many of us disagree entirely with you?

Think you're mistaken me old mucker. It's JWP I have been ridiculously unfair too. Don't think I've mentioned Cedric until now!
