Spurs 3-2 Saints - FA Cup Reaction

The sight of a player (Son) crawling around on the floor waving an imaginary card to try and influence the referee to book the opposition player is the most embarrassing sight.

That in itself should be a bookable offence.

It's childish, sad and pathetic.

Man up and grow a pair.

I noticed that as well, couldn't agree more, somebody needs to have a word with him but unfortunately i think that kind of behaviour is probably encouraged by some managers. Not the sort of thing that i would like to see our players doing.

Feel almost like we lacked belief.

Played really well till we actually took the lead and then let spurs off the hook rather meekly.

Very annoying long trek home when looked like being a fab trip home based on much of the display.

Yes it seemed like we worked so hard throughout the match to get in front, dominating for much of the time really. But once we were in front, it looked like we stopped doing what we had done so well defensively up til then. At the end of the day we are still frail at the back and need more quality and know how. Spurs upped their game just a bit when they went behind and defensively we couldn't handle it.

Annoying as we should have won this game comfortably based on performances of the 2 sides.

All that's happened is we had an extra game that we could have done without and 2 players picked up injuries. Would have rather lost the first game 1-0 and not had this fixture. The players could have had a rest and we could focus on finishing as high up the league as possible. I'm still not convinced that we won't end up in a relegation scrap, having facing two of our south coast rivals in the last three games.

At least I've got something ludicrous to laugh at now. [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

Really annoyed we lost that. The players deserve credit on one hand, as again we've gone away to a "big" club and been the better side. But at some point if we're to get anywhere we need to stop messing up games where we play this well.

Spurs aren't a good side. They got extremely lucky against a city side who would have had 5 or 6 on another day. And we outplayed them for large parts of the match tonight.

We were great before and after their lucky first goal. Right up until Ings superb goal. After that, we just didn't threaten at all. We sat back, we backed off and we let them back in. Poor defending to let Moura have the shot, but Gunn should save it IMO. Too many shots you see many top flight keepers save just creep in. He's not good enough for us yet, needs a season in the championship playing each week. Annoying we had our best team out there but didn't play our best keeper.

Shame we didn't have anything left for injury time and any fightback. But everyone did their best. If we'd had Stephens at CB, JWP in midfield and a proper right back, we'd have won it comfortably.

Ings and Long superb, Boufal and Redmond always a threat. The four of them just need to realise that they do have the ability to go into these games and score 3 or 4.

Agree with all of this! This team need to be more clinical, full stop.

Agree with all you have said except I don't think you can blame Gunn for 2nd goal, well placed shot right in the corner.

I actually think he hesitated slightly in coming out for the last goal though, if he'd have been quicker he would have got there before Son.

I agree it's daft not picking your No1 keeper for a game like this.

Both Tottenham's late goals were far too easy the way they cut through the middle of our midfield. Romeu and Hojbjerg definitely should do better, and Vestergaard predictably couldn't then cope with Moura running at him for the 2nd.

Anyway - we could upheld our performance more or less. We play on a much higher level consistently than at season start. And we complain about not taking something from LV or Tottenham, that is a good sign! We are not (yet) top four, that is obvious. It is not a drama to loose against such teams this season.

The other clubs started to analyse our game and our defense, but nevertheless we still put our good performance on the pitch. With the new RB, JWP again on his position and Boufal getting better step by step we should have a good run in the updoming games.

That woman pundit on BT Sport used the words “no doubt it’s a penalty, he’s made contact”

It shows a close up of Gunn brushing his hand over Son’s knee.

Please tell me if I am being blind but I am pretty sure that Gunn gets contact with the ball with his foot before any 'supposed' contact with Son ???

You are not blind. Gunn gets a touch on the ball with his foot before his hand brushes Son’s shorts. Ball before man, perfectly legal.

With proper officiating we might have got extra time out of that.

What is the point of VAR?

Knew we had lost when I woke up with a few texts with the same jokes, about Saints not being able to own a dog due to not being able to hold a lead or some other nonsense.

Watched the match this morning and a typical Saints performance, don't make our dominance count and just concede willy nilly. End of the season for us. No cups to chase and can't see us going down as we will scrape the points needed. Our away form is not too bad and should be enough.

Frustrating.

Glad Ralph called it for what it was....great 70 minutes and then switched off, stopped defending well and ultimately it cost us

And the main reason for that being that we had Vestergaard on at CB, and Romeu's legs had gone, which left us far too open and easy to get at through the middle.

Feel deflated after that, 'Better' team for most of the game, guilty of missing some very good chances, bit naive defending at times but got nothing from the useless officials, might as well scrap VAR the usual big club bias remains.

Ward-prowse might just be a deep cut but depends what the cut went through, could still have damaged ligaments, fingers crossed as I think he deserves an England call up end of March.

Great scenes in our end when Ings shot hit the back of the net, thought he played very well.

Spurs fans the usual gobby cnts outside the ground, hate playing them.

Shame to have another year with no cup interest going into spring.

Sterling was tripped by Lloris last week and that was not given as a pen, when it looked more like one to me, this looks like a clear dive and if he does get a touch its minimal, given as a pen, both cases not over turned.

VAR is too scared to contradict refs, that was a clear and obvious error by the ref, Son was already going down and if there was contact it was not enough to bring him down, so they should be over ruling that.

People make the fuss about the narrow offsides but at least that is objective and to the letter of the law, where VAR annoys me the most is in situations like this because it is confirming bad decisions of refs.

Another good performance with very little to show for it. It shows I suppose where we really need to strengthen in the summer, our first 11 is good, at its best its very good and can cause problems to everyone, and we can freshen up our attackers and still provide a threat, Obafemi, Boufal, Djenepo etc. have all shown good cameos where they have come in for Ings, Redmond etc. but our rotation/sub options for midfield and central defence are not good enough. Romeu just doesn't cut it, he's never been that mobile and seems to have slowed even more and Vestergaard is clearly not good enough and should be sold.

Of course signing good players in January for these positions was never going to be easy but if they eff them up over the summer then even if we start much better next season we'll have a season of promise that ultimately will disappoint and frustrate. We have to get some quality in centre-mid to help out Hojberg and JWP, and we have to get a centre-back upgrade. (but we've known that for 3 seasons). Then we might be able to see out games better.

Had JWP not been injured I doubt we would have lost that game and had he not had to play right back then I doubt we would have conceded 4 against pool.

The team has 10 days off now, sounds like JWP injury was not too bad, Armstrong has returned earlier and Valery/KWP should be fit and up to speed by then, so barring some training injuries we should have a full fit squad for Burnley and we can push on over these easier fixtures and maybe have a sneaky challenge for Europe.

It would be very Saints though to play that well vs Pool and Spurs, then produce a flat dull performance at home to Burnley.

The comments about Romeu are laughable ....he played quite well; his legs are not gone and a fit JWP in midfield would not have altered the result.

Incredibly unjust, and knowing that the media will make nothing of this only makes it worse. **** Son, the cheating horrible bastard.

Hope we take the many positives from this game, that's what I will be focusing on. We look a bloody good team now and I hope we get to 40 points nice and quickly, to make a daring push for Europe (and beat Spurs to it); we can dream right?

We played very well for almost the entirety, without a specialist RB. We should have kept the lead and won it, but boy do we play some nice stuff now. A far cry from the last few seasons. Onwards and upwards.

A pity but when will we learn that our lads will always be knackered after 60/70 minutes of our high intensity style of play? Once that happens concentration goes and the inevitable happens. Clever of Spurs to allow us to play high speed keep ball and run ourselves into the ground while waiting patiently to pick us off later.

The lesson once again is that when we are dominant we MUST take our chances. We had plenty but once again our conversion rate is abysmal.

Love your optimism! Explain how we will be in a relegation scrap having already grabbed 31 pts with 36 likely to be the total needed to stay up.

My thoughts on last night:

WHL is an impressive stadium

Saints fans were superb - 90 mins of constant singing (TCWCB song a personal fav)

Spurs fans were shocking - backed up by my Spurs mate in the home end who confessed it was like a morgue

Redmond & Boufel were MOM for me

Son is a diving ****

But at the end of the day what is the point of spending cash, taking time of work, singing your hearts out when the result, it appears, has already been determined!!! To be honest the non pen at Liverpool & the Son pen last pen looked OK decisions at the time - BUT I thought that VAR was to rid football of the 'big' clubs getting these decisions?? Some faceless budgie at Stockley Park clearly wanted an early night whilst 6k Saints fans have to just accept he got an extra hour in bed!

Still fuming:x

whiil i echo your staying up sentiments, think a team will go down on 40 points this season, hopefully West ham, Bournemouth and obviously Norwich.

Christ talk about a glass half empty post, but thinking we still have rivals on the South Coast sounds like someone has taken your glass away from you for your own safety.

9 months ago we were relieved to stay up.

9 months later, despite losing both games we have been the better team for 45 and 70 minutes away to the current Champions League winners and runners up respectively. Maybe I'm too glass half full but we're only a killer instinct in front of goal and an extra 10 minutes of full fitness and concentration defending our own from challenging for those European places. I think our "South Coast rivals" will be a bit more concerned about avoiding relegation than us.

The commentary on BBC Radio 5, described Saints as being by far the better team. But, they failed to take chances that really should have resulted in goals. Ralph picked out the defence in the last 15 minutes for criticism but Saints should have been two or three goals ahead by then. To be 1-1 at half-time was already a failure to turn possession and attack into goals.

I hope the coaches won't be blinded by the fact that they conceded goals and allowed a player to dive for the penalty, because there needs to be more work on how to get the ball into the net more often.

great night up in London with fellow Saints fans. My first visit to Spurs new home and i must admit it is an impressive looking venue......but that's it...it's a venue not a football stadium, it's soulless!!!

I could not believe that considering this was a sell out the only fans you could hear all night was us singing for the full 90 minutes.

The game was a cracker, Saints played brilliantly, they carried on from recent good performances and totally dominated Spurs with only the odd breakaway for Spurs looking dangerous.

Again we have suffered because we have not killed the game off when in total control and Spurs got lucky with a horrible deflection and an unbelievable poor decision from the ref and VAR.

Full credit to the saints players who gave it everything, brilliant performance by Redmond for the second goal and what a finish by INGS.

All in all i'm not too downhearted this morning, we outplayed them in their new venue and we all know we have a great manager and some really good players. Just need the manager supported in the summer transfer market to get in the few players we need to make this a solid Premiership team.
