Here’s Dom arriving home, and facing the media. A media that have spent all day stressing how important the lockdown rules are.

Ha ha ha ha desperately seeking hypocrisy, putting up a bunch of paps who never stick to the rules in normal times is scraping the barrel. Maybe they all live together, maybe they are just protecting their children and it's perfectly acceptable and you shouldn't politicise it.

More from Alastair Campbell please. Excellent on Sky News.

Had to switch from BBC as that wet idiot who used to do South Today saying many of the public are saying this is a Westminster bubble story.

Exactly as Campbell highlights these plums are so easily taken and overridingly cautious about seen to be neutral just makes insipid tv.

Yep, Alastair Campbell absolutely nails it.

Do you think that Dom would visit his family if he thought for one minute he’d put them at risk?

Wake up and smell the coffee, we’ve been had. It’s all about saving face now. Some of us realised a few weeks back, when will it dawn on you? The draconian lockdown will save a minimal amount of Covid deaths, whilst bringing in a decade of misery.

All I can smell from you is pony droppings.

Sweden hasn't had a lockdown and its current death per capita rate is higher than anywhere in the world.

But at the very time DC was on his way to Durham, you were following the Government's advice;

29 March........

I live by the park, and was walking my dog. Perhaps you should read the Government advice yourself before you start preaching to others.

Exactly. March 29th, a few weeks back. Before it dawned on me, thanks for confirming my point.

When will it dawn on you, probably when it comes out in the inquiry. Makes me laugh that people post how incompetent the Government is, what **** ups they are, then blindly follow their advice to the letter, whilst criticising others that have started thinking for themselves.

To be fair, he should do. He’s first hand knowledge of Government advisors causing excess deaths.

Next up, Keith Richards on avoiding drugs during lockdown.

Yawn. What may or may not have happened in the past in respect of unrelated matters is irrelevant. Even a Tory MP has been sufficiently honest to tweet that this idiot has to go.

Wow! One whole Tory MP. Has the BBC put in on the News yet that there is widespread support from within the party for Cummings to be sacked

Ever heard of the whip? The point is that at least one tory mp has been more willing to state the bleeding obvious than some on here.

Seven MPs now defying the whip. . Feels like a bit of momentum building up. I wonder who will be the first Cabinet minister to break ranks.

Of course I've heard of the whip. It's used when it comes to how MPs should vote along Party lines on policy matters, not on things like this. Are you suggesting that all Tory MPs have been whipped that they shouldn't express any opinions on a Party advisor's behaviour? That really would be political dynamite if it got out, so I presume that you think that they are all too scared of expressing an opinion because they might be in trouble with the Whips' office. I think that's a pretty feeble explanation.

They’ll be dozens and dozens of them, including solid Tories like Bill Cash & Steve Baker. Dom upset a hell of a lot of his own side (including our Nigel) during the referendum.

Read the post above. Feel free to publish a link to any evidence that the Party have whipped MPs not to express their opinions on this.

Grant Shapps is playing a blinder!

Dealing with every question clearly and concisely, not lying too much about the police, or contradicting himself and the PM, very little muttering about the A66 - three fantastic media performances on the trot.

That’s ok then.

Campbell can comment because his dodgy behaviour only involved an illegal war. Had he driven across the country to see his parents during lockdown, he couldn’t,

You’re consistent, I’ll give you that. Consistent in your inconsistency.

Bless you Duck. You're consistent at making noise, and consistently shocking at making valid points.

It's one thing to be loyal to your party, well done, but another thing to defend the indefensible.

Did he mention Dom's wife claiming in her Spectator column they were locked down in London? That'll be the same Spectator, formerly edited by Johnson, that is now putting the knife in. It's almost as if they hate being misled and lied to.

And Campbell accuses Cummings and his wife as being in the top 1% of earners in the country. Yes, they're right up there with the Kinnocks, father and son, and probably Campbell himself.

But what is most amusing is his line “It is all of a piece with the arrogance and elitism of these people who won power by pretending to be on the side of the people against some sort of elite.” Surely that used to be the role of the Labour Party. How things have changed.

It’s getting embarrassing watching the government desperately trying to defend him now, they must be really desperate to keep him in a job.

It’s obvious that he just didn’t want to be holed up in London for two weeks, the idea that his kid’s life was in danger is laughable. Thousands of parents up and down the country would have caught the virus and just stayed at home, he’s no different.

People have made huge sacrifices in keeping to the rules, missed funerals of loved ones etc. No the people who made us stick to the rules are now saying we could have travelled the length of the country to see extended family all along, even if we were infected. No wonder people are angry.

I haven’t defended him at all. Pointing out the press wetting their knickers over breaches of regulations, whilst breaking those regulations. Pointing out the irony of an ex Government advisor whose dodgy behaviour was far worse than driving to Durham, being held up as some sort of authority on morals, is not defending him.

I said at the start, I’m taking Dame Margaret Beckett approach.

They’ll be even angrier once the furlough scheme is wound up & hundreds of thousands of them are chucked out of work.

I made my views clear to my whip yesterday. There cannot be one rule for most of us and wriggle room for others. My inbox is rammed with very angry constituents and I do not blame them. They have made difficult sacrifices over the course of the last 9 weeks.

Tony Blair let Bernie Ecclestone off the hook on tobacco advertising back in 1997 so really what's all the fuss about Dominic Cummings.

Jacqui Smith's husband watched porn on a home office computer so what's all the fuss about Dominic Cummings.

Geoff Hoon gone done over for being caught looking for lucrative lobbying work.

Jonathan Aiken got himself banged up for libel over his relationship with the Arabs.

Jeremy Thorpe for fu cks sake.

And Profumo, what about him.

I think we can all agree that all of this means that Dominic Cummings can do whatever he likes for the rest of his life because what about that other thing that happened once.

Yet that is exactly what he did. And despite being told not to shake hands with people and to keep a social distance, Boris Johnson actually shook hands with people infected with the virus. Stupid is as stupid does. Without a shadow of a doubt, hundreds, maybe thousands of lives could have been saved if we locked down sooner and more efficiently. As it is, lives were still saved when we did eventually lock down. Governments don’t risk economic disaster on a whim. There is a reason most of the planet shut down and by doing so it has helped contain a virus that still has the potential to kill millions.

They always say it's the cover-up that does the damage.

Rather than smugly dishing out distancing advice in the street, Cummings could have humbly admitted it as a mistake when under parenting pressure and pleaded stupidity, Johnson could have told him off in public, suspended him briefly and both could have carried on - the story would be chip wrapper today.

But no, they think they are above the law, so instead we had denials, then an explanation, then a slightly-different explanation, both of which were riddled with gaping holes.

Now we have cabinet ministers lying, redefining lockdown measures on the hoof, or evading the simplest questions, no.10 saying fake news, while Durham police and the papers stand 100% by their versions of events.

This defence has become a total Clusterf()ck of the highest order and is doing more damage with every hour that passes - it will be held up as a textbook way in which you turn a small drama into a crisis.

Not only is Cummings sinking, he is now dragging down all of those who have joined him in his arrogant charade.

The spotlight now turns onto those who are still insisting that this particular dead cat is absolutely fine.

Ironically his mistake is now spreading like a virus through the cabinet.

Got to laugh at so many people pretending their faux rage is about the lockdown rules when in reality they think this is the key to derailing brexit.

 you are by far my favourite poster on here.

Code for "I'm repeating what I've been told but I don't believe it any more than you do"

I wonder if Shapps will be wheeled out again this afternoon. Would it be the time for the glorious leader to make an appearance??

Perhaps Wes would volunteer for the gig.

Of course its not. Countries who locked down quicker, and properly, have lost less people. And don't give me that comparing to apples to pears pony. It was obvious that we'd end up with more deaths than others and we have, and will have many more because of the "give an inch and they'll take a mile" populous.

It’s load of old pony unless you factor in the long term consequences for mental and physical well being that’ll follow the upcoming depression.
