Top five Saints captains?

Wondering if we've had many who were great, inspirational leaders for us, like players like Keane, Terry and Gerrard were for their clubs. We've had a lot of understated captains, like Fonte, Lundekvam and Dodd. I always thought Hammond brought a calm stability to the role when he joined us.

Alan Ball was out on his own as Saints captain in my lifetime.

Jimmy Case was the closest thing to him.

Terry Paine was captain when I first started following Saints but I don't think he comes close to Alan Ball in being able to change the direction of play on the pitch and motivate those around him.

Kelvin Davis has to be up there.

Given the Team Captaincy when Liebherr took over in League One, turning down a move to West Ham in the Premier League in the process.

First season we won at Wembley in the JPT.

Second season we were promoted from League One.

Third season we were promoted from Championship (and finished above West Ham).

After that he became Club Captain, and all the way through he was reportedly a massive influence in the changing room.
